No window defrost using Tesla app?

No window defrost using Tesla app?

Is it not possible to turn on the window defrost with the climate control in the Tesla app?

I was recently parked outside overnight at a hotel where freezing rain turned to snow. So in the morning my doors and door handles were frozen and ice and snow covered my car not allowing me to get inside.

I used the Tesla app to heat the inside of the car but noticed I could not turn on the window defrost with the app. It was not until the car warmed up that I could get inside to manually turn on the window defrost.

Heating the inside of the car did not have any benefit to melting the ice off the windshield but if defrost can be turned on with the app it would be helpful when the outside of the car is frozen.

And to be clear I’m obsessed with the awesomeness of this car and my post should not be taken as being negative but merely some thoughts to improve on what is already top notch. And maybe one can already use defrost with the app and I just can’t figure it out. Thanks.

Odd, when I pre heat mine in the morning it seems to turn on everything that makes heat, front and rear defrosters, seats, heater. Any ice on the windows is melted slush by the time I am ready to leave. Haven’t had to use an ice scraper yet.

The app will show the defroster and seat icons too. Can turn the seats on/ off. Never tried the defroster

Daryl | January 1, 2019

Turning on the heat in the app also turns on the defroster for me too.

It also turns on all the seat heaters, so I usually end up turning most of them off. Not sure if that's useful or not, might be better to let me turn them on manually where and when I need them.

Pierogi | January 1, 2019

The previous version of the app would allow me to turn on the air and defrost turned on automatically. The seat heaters were not an option.

The latest update I can turn on the air AND control the seat heaters but defrost won’t come on automatically nor manually.

Does it matter if the car is plugged in ? maybe because you were outside and not plugged in ?

Pierogi | January 1, 2019

I tried both - plugged in and unplugged. Last night it was outside, plugged in, and got down to 4 degrees and the climate options with the app were the same.

Just connected to mine to see. When I preheat, it does cabin (vents), seats, and defrost. See picture and upper right hand corner.

My app used to do climate, now does not, just checked. My app doesn't look like terry.k.morrow's. However, what I have started doing is to set the temp high, 70-75 for preheating. Also, turning on defrost before leaving it helps too. Personally I'd like to be able to schedule my preheat, i have problems connecting at work.

*sorry, didn't proofread before posting! Btw I live in Maine, car is always plugged in while home.

terry.k.morrow | January 1, 2019

@mmclean708 are you using an android phone? Mine is iPhone XS with most recent update to Tesla app FWIW.

wiboater4 | January 1, 2019

Just tried mine . I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ and I do not show that defrost icon at the upper right either. I'm wondering if it doesn't go on unless the camera sees something on the windshield? Unless it's just a difference in the phone apps?

golfin_i | January 1, 2019

I think we have different versions of the software. I am on 2018.48.12.1 and I do NOT have the defroster Available in my climate control in the app.

golfin_i I am on the same software as you are and I think there is one newer one out now.

Mine sometimes defrosts and some times doesn't so I assume it has something to do with the camera seeing threw the glass. But I could be wrong.

terry.k.morrow | January 1, 2019

Hm. My glass is pretty clean and it’s in garage. Maybe it has something to do with temp? I’m in Michigan and it’s been in 30s and 40s. Slightly warmer in garage.
Two questions:
1)Is anybody using the iPhone app and not seeing it?

2)for those of you not seeing on app, have you gone out to check the car to see if it’s blowing on windshield? Maybe the android version doesn’t show it, but it’s happening ?

terry.k.morrow | January 1, 2019

I just read in a reddit post that it is temp based.

Pierogi | January 1, 2019

I’m on 48.12.1

My car is outside and it’s 15 degrees out. I left the defrost on when I turned the car off and walked away. Turned the climate control on with my phone and no defrost option.

My car will be outdside overnight and it’s going to get down to 2 degrees. I’ll try again and see what happens.

terry.k.morrow | January 1, 2019

@Pierogi are you using an iPhone or Android.
I’m trying to determine if the apps are a little different for different operating systems.

Pierogi | January 1, 2019

iPhone

mmclean708 | January 1, 2019

Terry.k.morrow, I am on Samsung galaxy note9. App and 3 both fully updated. I did post a review on the app at the play store and requested this option be restored, because I had defrost before they added seat warmers.

Tesla2018 | January 1, 2019

Would having the seat heater and the defroster on at the same time cause too much of a current drain which would drain the regular battery?

terry.k.morrow | January 1, 2019

I look forward to this mystery being resolved. It’s so strange that we have the same hardware and software yet the apps are showing different screens.

Brian B | January 1, 2019

I think it depends on whether you have the temp on AUTO before you leave the car. If not on auto, it just goes to whatever you had it at last. I think you may be able to force it to AUTO if you change the temperature. I'm fairly sure it decides on its own whether to defrost when it is on AUTO. I've seen that even when I'm driving or just getting in. It'll also turn it off when not needed anymore.

eandmjep | January 1, 2019

I think defrost is temprature related. Seat heaters with update default all seats to level 2. If i adjust drivers to 3 without touching any others the rest turn off.

mmclean708 | January 2, 2019

Good point on auto setting, @Brian b. I'll give that a shot. I have my vents pointing at the doors to help with window freeze, and could use defrost...this morning the temp is 16 with ice covered snow on the car. I am preheating now..5 am, leaving for work at 7. Will try putting on auto when I get out of car.

walnotr | January 2, 2019

Definitely temperature related. Yesterday after reading this thread I checked for the defrost icon. Interior temp was already at 62 ant using the app to turn on climate showed the seat heaters all off and no defrost icon. This morning, internal temp is 52 (I know, really suffering!) and seat warmers came on at level two and the defrost icon was there. The windshield appears to be clear so I assume the cameras are not the determining factor. It’s dark out so I can’t get a really good look though.

Pierogi | January 2, 2019

Ok here was the test this morning:

Minus 2 degrees outside here today (0 inside the car) and the car is covered with a dusting of snow, including all the glass, and not plugged in. Turned the climate control on with the app and no options for defrost nor does it come on automatically regardless of what temperature I set the app to. I can only control temp and seat heaters with the app.

I’ll be moving the car to the nearby superchargers to charge before leaving (of which 4/6 charger spots are ICE’d) and will see if being plugged in matters. I will also check the auto settings.

miguelcampeau | January 2, 2019

I remotely started the heating for my Model 3 last night. Temperature was below freezing at 14F and i had about 1 inch and a half of ice and compacted snow completely covering my car. Defrost did not start and i did not see the icon on my phone. I had to physically go into my car to start the defrost. Did not notice if my heating was in Auto or manual mode. I have version 2018.49.12.1

Pierogi | January 2, 2019

So I tried seeing if I could get the defrost turned on with the app while the car is plugged in and charging - no such luck. I emailed Tesla support to see what they say and maybe there will be an update to allow remote defrosting.

-Nik- | January 3, 2019

So I've been paying attention to this for the last couple of days. Yesterday, warm up car via app, heaters and seat heater appear on via the app, no defroster icon. Car was warm, no signs of moisture/ ice on the car. Temps, low 20's

Today, warm up car via app, heater, seat heater and defrost icon appear on app (cannot turn off defrost via app). Car is warm, frost on frunk, none on windows, temps, low 20's

Is it possibly detecting when there is moisture/ ice on the windows?

mmclean708 | January 3, 2019

@nik, I am thinking you may be close. Morning temp here today was about 20 and snowing when I woke the car. No defrost...but with snow there's no frost. I did set the car to auto last night, no defrost. Defrost came on in warm up mode last fall.....when there was a frost. Snow? I just crank the temp for warm up. But the ability to turn it on, and off, would be handy.

terry.k.morrow | January 3, 2019

Just checked mine again. Every single time defrost has come on. Just now, it didn’t. Conditions seem the same. Plugged in. In garage. Moisture and tenor pretty much same. When I parked it this evening though it had been a very mild afternoon for Michigan January. Maybe low 40s and sunny. Currently mid 30s. Interior climate of car is 45.
Weird.

jmda61 | January 4, 2019

Defrost disappeared from app last week of Dec., App will not turning on rear window defrost even when windows are covered with snow and ice.... have to manually turn defrost from car display.

Pierogi | January 4, 2019

This morning I completed an over the air update to my Model 3. My car is in my garage connected to a Tesla wall charger overnight. The update is version 2018.50.

The interior temperature of the car was 42 degrees and it's about 34 degrees outside when I turned climate control on with my phone. There was no frost on my windshield and when I turned the climate control on remotely using my iPhone Tesla app - I could not believe it but the defrost symbol showed in the upper right corner of the "climate control" screen. I essentially had the same @terry.k.morrow posted above on 1/1.

jefjes | January 4, 2019

I find that occasionally things start working or showing up differently with no apparent reason and when I do a manual reboot, they usually go back to where they were. Maybe if you haven't tried that when the defrost disappearing happened, you should have done that first. If that was tried then not sure what the issue could be. I'm on 2018.48.12 using an android phone on android 8 and haven't ever seen the defrost not come on when preconditioning the car.

jordanrichard | January 4, 2019

Front and rear defrosters will/should come on automatically based on temperature, but I don't know what specific temperature.

SlyB. | January 4, 2019

Pierogi,
Same issue with my Model 3, let us know if you hear any specifics from support.

kcheng | January 4, 2019

Always helps to know the car's software version, but also the App's software version. According to Stats, only 7.4% of owners are on Firmware 2018.50. Most are still on 48.12.1, 75%.

Burt_23 | January 7, 2019

I have the same issue!!! Since the new update with the selection of seat heater, I had the possibility to defrost the front window and rear window, I think it was the rear window. Now with the version 2018.49.12.1, it desappear. I can only select the heated seat which by the way pist me off because they heated all seat. I have a baby seat in the back, put heat on that freak me out to deform permanantly the leather. I'm always obligated to desactivated all one by one.

wiboater4 | January 7, 2019

Updated to 2018. 50 yesterday and now I have the defrost icon on my phone in climate.

Burt_23 | January 8, 2019

Hello to all,
I just receive a procedure from Tesla. I have a doubt but after doing this, the defrost icon appear on the upper right corner of the apps.
Don't ask me why this procedur solve the problem but it look like the car gave the fonction to the apps and not the other way.
So try yhis and let me know if it works for you.

1: Parked you in a safe place, then place your foot ont he brake pedal and hold both of the scroll wheels on your steering wheels. This process normally takes 45 sec to 1 min. Your center console will turn off continue to hold the scroll wheels until the white Tesla logo appears ont hte screen. When you can see the Tesla logo you can release the scrolls wheels and the pedal. They told me this procedure reset the car but don't panic, you will not loose your settings.

2: when your screen came bakc, do this procedure to power cycle your car. in the lower left hand corner enter the controls menu. Under safety and security " Sécurité for the french person" power the véhicule off. Leave the car powered down for 2 min. After 2 min have passed you can press the brake pedal and the véhicule will wake up and be ready for use. For me a let more thant 2 min and the car wake up alone.

On your phone, just close completely the apps and reopen it and voilà!!!!

Le me know if it works for you

Theay gave me an email for questions or concerne ServiceHelpNA@Tesla.com or 1-877-79-TESLA (83752) it's 24/24 7/7 days

have a good day

Cyphr1s | January 8, 2019

Mine turns on when the temp is in the 40s but when it is completely frosted and the temp is 18 the defrost doesn't turn on. Not sure why they don't let us choose if we want it on or not. Automatic isn't always the best option for all.

SlyB. | January 10, 2019

Update, My icon is turned on now, 31F, I can tell car is getting warm but windshield doesn't defrost seems it doesn't switch vents to the front window, on the other hand I can see rear window heating element is working and melting frost/snow(no icon for rear is on)
Currently I do not keep my climate setting in Manual, I assume it should still turn on defrost for the windshield if its indicated in the app.
Will try to leave cars climate set to AUTO and see if that does the trick.

(I'm quite convinced I seen it run windshield defrost once before......so, yea puzzled)

SlyB. | January 10, 2019

Correction, I meant to say I do keep it in Manual setting.

4fannings | January 18, 2019

I also have been having Pierogi's issue just for the last few days. Prior to that everything was working fine. I'm going to try the shutdown/reboot procedure that Burt posted to see if that resets things. It's been very frustrating to not be able to defrost the windows via the app. fingers crossed

4fannings | January 19, 2019

Yup, all good now. Burt's posted procedure seems to have worked.
