Panoramic roof accommodates roof racks

Panoramic roof accommodates roof racks

I thought I remembered an explicit FAQ entry indicating that the panoramic roof would be unable to accommodate a roof rack (or maybe it was just forum rumor?).

In any case, I visited the Santana Row store in Santa Clara, CA this weekend. They have an S Beta car on display (with the panoramic roof), and there were some funny hinged panels running the length of the roof near the edges where door glass meets the top of the car. I asked one of the reps, and he indicated that these flip up to reveal attachment points for a roof rack.

This was "news" to me, so I thought I'd pass it on here. But maybe it was already announced elsewhere previously, and I just missed it.

michaelwm, I think this really is news. Model S Program Director Jerome Guillen explicitly said in a recent blog post:

The standard roof will accommodate roof racks that mount on door frames.

This phrase was interpreted as saying that the panoramic roof does not support roof racks of any kind. It's good to hear that this interpretation was wrong!

I noticed those attachment points myself. My fingers are crossed that there will be an optional roof rack and that the pano roof will support it. I want to be able to transport the occasional sheet of plywood without having to rent the Lowes truck.

this is what I heard from my local dealer

The roof rack is something that Model S was engineered to have. It isn’t available just yet, but it is an accessory that will be available In the future. Also, it will actually only work with the panoramic roof. The body color roof and black painted roof will not be able to accept the roof rack.

So I guess the statement of 'The standard roof will accommodate roof racks that mount on door frames" is still valid. Does anyone have pics of this accessory?
