Question about HW3

Question about HW3

I purchased my MR3 in December, 2018. It was a December, 2018 build. I paid for EAP option. In March, 2019, I received an offer to upgrade to FSD for $2000, which I did. It was my understanding that the FSD upgrade included installation of HW3 at no additional charge, when it was available. I have heard nothing from Tesla about installation of new hardware.

Am I remembering incorrectly? What is the latest news about HW3 for earlier build cars.

BTW, the car is fabulous. No problems. Even my wife wife loves this car as much as I do, but she does not trust the Autopilot feature yet although she can't live without Adaptive Cruise Control! Go figure.

I understand that all buyers of FSD will get the HW3 Upgrade for free. Previously, Musk tweeted that upgrades would really start when the new hardware was needed because of new software features. Musk tweeted recently that upgrades should start in significant numbers after the first of the year.

I'm in the same circumstances, with car purchased in July 2018. My understanding is we sit tight and wait for notification to install HW3.

I will ask if I hear nothing by end of Feb. I haven't tried to figure out how many cars need the HW3 install, or walked through any probable timelines, but just think that after a couple of months might be the right time to start asking, unless I'd already been scheduled.

You are remembering correctly. There are numerous threads on this topic. The hardware three updates are being scheduled by vehicle over time. Sounds like pace will pick up in Q1.

I hope so - I'd like to get the new computer installed sooner than later!

I am happy to wait for a while. Let them iron out those little issues that tend to pop-up early in a release cycle.

How can you which HW version is in your car?

If you can see visualizations for traffic cones, then you have HW3.

EVRider | December 30, 2019

To see traffic lights and stop signs with HW3 (if you have version 40.50 or later), you need to enable FSD Visualization Preview under Controls > Autopilot. I don’t think there’s a setting for traffic cones.

Lonestar10_1999 | December 30, 2019

If you have 40.50 or later and there is no option for FSD Visualization, then you must have HW2.5, right?

jfabula1 | December 30, 2019

All M3 manufactured by April 2019 are all on HW3. See Teslas sites

Smalm | December 30, 2019

@jfabula1 unfortunately not true. I agree it was announced and widely reported, but I just received confirmation via support chat that my 6/19 build has HW2.5

Lonestar10_1999 | December 30, 2019

@Smalm - do you see the option to enable FSD Visualization?

Just was told by service that I am on wait list for upgrade, they are slowly rolling out the upgrades. When parts are in hand they will contact me for service appointment and replacement.

It's happening.. my HW3 upgrade was done over the Thanksgiving holiday. It's nice to see the visualizations, but it's not really that useful.

TexasBob | December 30, 2019

I tried to schedule my upgrades using the mobile app and the ranger. They politely said no, but we will let you know when we are ready.
