Quickly losing mileage?

I am a proud owner of not one Tesla model S but TWO! Husband and I decided to get a his and hers cars after much deliberation. I ordered a red 60 and my husband bought the loaner blue P85 off the lot. I've just started driving them and noticed a decrease of mileage in the new Red 60. When I parked the car at night it was at 121 and by morning it went down to 108. This is version 5.0. Then when I parked the red 60 car and came back to check on the red car it went from 88 to 85 in a course of two hours. Is this something I should be concerned about? I know there is a small drain at night but this seems excessive or am I missing something?

Hmmm - It sounds like all the S60 on V4.5. Unless one of the doors didn't close completely and the AC kept on running overnight, V5.0 should not lose more than 1-2 miles per day.

So you don't charge your S60 overnight? What is the firmware version of your S60? 5.0.xxxx?

How long have you had your S60? How many days have you logged the drain pattern? If it persists for 2-3 days, you should contact your SC for advice.

It's V5.0 (1.35.107)

I got the car last friday but had to park it in the garage plugged into a v10 outlet as they had delivered it early but right before my family vacation.

I did not plug this red 60 in last night because I only have one available V10 oulet and it was being used to charge my blue 85. (The outlet situation is being corrected as we speak by electricians)

Yes, it seems like a lot to lose over night. Perhaps a door wasn't shut properly. I will watch it for a few more days. This has been the first full day I've been back. The most perplexing thing to me is the mileage loss during the short time it was parked (from 88 to 85.)

I'm now in my car to check the firm update and it says 84.

Uh, yeah... As I stated the cars were delivered early. Before the electricians could wire my house. (My house was quite the project.) They just finished putting one in. The issue is I am seeing 10- 15 mile loss over night. As it sits, its losing around 3 miles every hour and a half just parked in my garage. I just wanted to know if that is out of the ordinary because my blue P85 isn't losing mileage like that.

3 mile loss per hour and a half is an extreme outlier. Service may be able to check it remotely.

While dropping my car off today, I had my husband follow behind me and he noted that the driver side break light always seemed to be on. Perhaps one of the reasons for my drainage. I also noted that my radio didn't seem to work that well and maybe some alignment issues with my door. They told me it would probably be done by three.

Just got a call to say they want to keep it over night which is nice because that means they are taking it seriously. So far I'm very impressed with the service. Can't tell you how many times I was blown off by MB service and then ended up on the side of the road waiting for a tow.

Took it into service and they fixed the tail light. It was always on so that must have sucked power. Keeping an eye on my readings and so far they seem to be pretty fair. I'll keep my eye on it.

@Lygren: Will you keep me updated on what you find?

Yesterday night at 11 p.m. the speedometer showed 114 km.
Car parked in warm garage. Nothing on.
This morning 7 a.m. it showed 107 km. That's 7 km (4,5 miles) loss in 8 hours.

Drive to work (9 km). A little demo drive for interested persons.
Parked the car outside at office with 98 km to go at 10 a.m.
13 degrees C = 55 F.
Sitting down in car at 6 p.m. Now it shows 89 to go.
9 km (4,5 miles) loss in 8 hours.

I swear, nothing on in car, not heating, not seat, not air. Nothing. Just parked and went in.

So, since last night 11 p.m. the car has been stationary for 17 hours and lost as many kilometers. That's 0,6 miles/hr!!!!

Is this really normal?????

Now parked since 6.30 p.m. in heated garage - shows 79 to go.

I had planned to go to the office (9), thence in the afternoon to the airport (43) where it can be charged for free. If it keeps losing juice at this speed, I won't make it.

Comments, please? Have I got a "Monday copy"?

@robert@bis.se - Call your service center to check it out. We are aware that owners with V4.5 all lose about 1/2 mile per hour. V5.0 owners should not lose more than 1-2 miles per day.

As @Brit mentioned, her back tail light was always on and resulted in the drainage that you experience as well.

That value of ancillary loss is true, iff (if and only if) you don't wake the car up with the fob or the app frequently.

My tail lights aren't on, the car is completely dark and still, and I do have V5.0 (which has tried to update twice - both failed).

Since I parked an hour ago (79) it has gone down to 78.

Battery is heated at 10ºC or below, that could explain some of your range loss.

Again, thanks for this, but in all of the above description, the car has not been in a temp below 13 degrees C (= 55 F).

It is standing since 6.30 p.m. in a garage with 19 degrees C (66 F), and has now (9.10 p.m.) gone from 79 to 77 km.

Since low temp can be ruled out, what other reasons could there be?

Someone jokingly referred to my having the 84th problem.
That now doesn't seem to be a joke.

@ robert - all I can suggest at this point is to contact Tesla Ownership team or your service center to have it looked into. I think you also posted in another thread that your door armrest lights are not functioning correctly - the flicker in and out depending on your driving speed and whether you are turning. It sounds like you may have some electrical issues with your car that need to be resolved and that could be related to your higher than expected battery usage.

Also, perhaps your fob is being kept too close to the car, causing it to stay awake (I'm on 4.5, so I don't know if that's possible, but it seems like it could be!).

Yes, that's right.
At least I have now heard that

- the reason why the car cannot update is because there is a problem with the 12V Battery (that was from the 1st second I took possession).
- The rest may be a consequence of that. They'll probably visit me on Monday to try to fix the 12V thing. Perhaps the rest will be fixed at the same time.

However, quality control....I must say that I think this is a bit much for a car in this price range, 6 days old.

- 12V Batter to be exchanged from sec 1
- no updates possible
- bleeding energy
- armrest lights flicking on and off
- black dashboard
- TPMS screw-up for "winter" countries
- no hints or trouble-shooting in manual
- there are a couple of more things, but the bliss at age 70 is that one forgets very quickly...

Update.
At 6.30 a.m. it is down to 70, meaning a loss of 9 km in 12 hours.
I personally find this unacceptable. Is this standard?

Another thing:

after I closed the door (just opened it quickly to see the meter) I stood stock still beside the car for several minutes, having disposed of the key into another room, to see how long it would take for the car to go to sleep.

Several times in a succession I heard a loud crack from under the car, followed by a whining sound, like from a turbine (actual pitch: C sharp), which stopped after about half a minute. Then short pause, another crack, another whine, this time oscillating in waves between C sharp and D, sort of C sharp and then a short push up a semitone and back to C sharp, then another push, all this for about half a minute, then it quietened down. The ANOTHER set of crack, whine. And I eushed to the computer.

Of course if it does this all night, I can understand why it is draining energy.

Observe, I did NOT sit in to the car, I just opened the door, looked for a second, and closed it.

Any explanation? I don't think it can have to do with levelling - I mean, after 12 hours one would have thought that it should have found a niced sleeping position.

Having written all this, I went down and opened the door to the garage. The whining turbine noise was on. Hmmmmmm.

But just a thought: could it be that it is leaking air from the suspension, going down a little (the crack), causing the motor to work to get air into the system and levelling up, then leak etc etc??

That would explain something?

My thoughts are that most of your problems stem from the faulty 12 v. The excessive drain could be your main battery constantly needing to charge it. The 12v might also explain the dashboard, update, flicker and that whirring sound. That c sharp whine and the crack noise could be affecting your motion control lighting.

Nothing we can do about the lack of a troubleshooting page, but have you yet read nick howe's check list and owner's guide? I will suggest a troubleshooting section, if he has time.

I'm putting my money on the 12V battery as the source of almost all of your problems. Just out of curiosity, why don't you plug your car in at night? It is recommended.

Because I am in energy saving, and I am serious about it. During daytime I produce my own electricity and that's the one I want to use. Unless I go for drives > 50% range one way, this car will NOT be charged with commercially produced electricity, which, whatever they say, often is "dirty". Not a question about money, but principles. This is also why I REALLY want a battery system.

At home I have Si (Silicon?) solar cells, and they need sun, but at work I have installed almost 5'000 sq feet of another type of solar cells, not as efficient, but reacting on daylight alone, also without sun.

Let's see after Monday, assuming that the techs can solve the 12-V problem. I'll keep you posted.

Robert: 1 mile loss every 2 hours is normal pre 5.0 vampire loss.

The loud crack is the contactor (high powered on / off switch) disconnecting / reconnecting the main battery.

I think you should simply solve the problem by trading cars with your husband - at least, that would be the solution in my house. :)

After you trade cars, have your husband reboot the system and if he is having this problem consistently it is something to have service fix. Once HIS car is fixed, I see no reason to trade back.

Ok sorry I was out of the loop on this thread. Even though at times my tail light would be off, the module for it was always sucking energy. (i'm not a car tech! Far from it, so that is what I understood)

I would bring your car in for service. Does not sound normal. Yes you lose a little bit of mileage for starting up and getting the car going (just like an ICE) but that seems extensive. I agree with PP about the 12 V battery and if you had lighting issues assume something is pulling power.

Take your car in. My fix was super quick, but I was out of town so they kept it longer for me and confirmed that my loss over night was 1-3 miles.

I have the same issue with the drain, however even more - about 1-1,5km / hour on my S60.

I have reported the issue to Tesla about a month ago, but still no response (Norway).
