Rear view camera angle change with 4.4

Rear view camera angle change with 4.4

I installed 4.4 last night, and noticed that now the rear view has a distinctly wider angle. Before, I couldn't see the bumper, but now I can. This improves its functionality, because now I don't have to guess how much space I have before I contact something. Nice that they could do it via software. Did anyone else notice that?

jemartin | April 17, 2013

I got 4.4 (1.31.11) last night as well and the angle hasn't changed. I was already seeing the bumper and a corner of the license plate. The image is exactly the same now as far as I can tell (and I use the rear view camera to back up right against the wall at the office every day...). 4rth issue-free software upgrade so far. I can't tell what's changed in this one...

cpetrush | April 17, 2013

I went out and checked mine and indeed I can see more. I couldn't see any of the car before but now see the bumper. Pretty sure we're not crazy but, anyone else?

BYT | April 17, 2013

4.4 loaded for me last night, I'll take a look as well, off the bat I didn't notice anything when driving in this morning. | April 17, 2013

Seems like the same camera angle. I've always been able to see a portion of the bumper.

markapeterman | April 17, 2013

Same for me - always been able to see a portion of the bumper, too.

dstiavnicky | April 17, 2013

4.5 should be fully interactive so that you can spin it to see the front and sides of the car... ;) | April 17, 2013

Just checked and yes, with 4.4 I can now see a bit of the bumper that I don't remember seeing before. I do have the tech package (i.e. HD view), so perhaps those without tech package already saw the bumper?

To be fair, I still mostly use the rear-view mirror, so it's possible the last 4.3 release included the bumper in the view, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't in 4.2 and earlier.

jat | April 17, 2013

I see very slightly more than before -- I always saw the edges of the bumper, but now I see the middle and I also see black spots at the top corners that weren't there before. No big difference either way to me. I suspect this is for Tech Package only if some people aren't seeing a difference.

mkh1437 | April 17, 2013

Wondering if maybe this is a difference between the HD camera (Tech Package) and non-HD? I have the Tech Package and HD camera, and I was always able to see some of the license plate. I don't notice a difference after the 4.4 update. Maybe there was a change to the SD camera?

jat | April 17, 2013

@mkh1437 - I have the HD camera, and I could always see the ends of the bumper but none of the license plate before this update. I would not be surprised if there were slight differences in the mounting of the camera between cars -- it wouldn't take much to make a noticeable difference.

weeandthewads | April 17, 2013

If they are taking the time to change the camera then Grid lines would be nice.

Carefree | April 17, 2013

P85 with Tech - no change in camera angle with the 4.4 update.

GeekEV | April 17, 2013

I have non-tech and could always see the plate and black in the corners before 4.3 or 4.4...

BYT | April 17, 2013

I can confirm, MUCH better blind spot view on the right side of the car, I always drive in the fast lane so I didn't judge the right side... :)

I could see the tail of a Honda Accord as well as see the first 3rd of the front hood from my passenger side window.

BYT | April 17, 2013

Sorry, couldn't judge the LEFT side!!

BYT | April 17, 2013

Sorry, also, better bluetooth range, very slightly, before I had to take my iPhone 5 out of my right side pocket to hear music via bluetooth, now it works better and almost don't have to remove it from my pocket. Anyone else observe that?

diegoPasadena | April 17, 2013

Mine is with without the tech package, and the difference is quite distinct:
When I first got the car, I asked my wife to slowly move toward the car until the tips of her shoes were at the edge of the frame, and then I got out to look how close she was to the car. It was about an inch from the bumper. Now, I can see the bumper, so that whole exercise would not have been necessary.

LazMan | April 17, 2013

My garage is a tight fit. I put some blue hockey tape along the edge of the garage floor. Now I drive into the garage with the rearview camera on and stop the car as soon as I see the tape.

It works perfectly and lets me park the car within a few inches each time.

RobS | April 17, 2013

LazMan - love this low-tech idea! I've been using the backup camera to check my position in parking lots, but never thought how it could be helpful at home.

kalel65 | April 17, 2013

I saw the same thing. Wider angle view

Did anybody notice apparent improvement in predicted range? I thought so but not sure.

Captain_Zap | April 17, 2013

The difference in the rear camera view is very obvious in my car. I couldn't see my rear bumper previously.

DouglasR | April 17, 2013

My car has the tech package and just installed 4.4. I think the selection on Slacker has gotten better. Also, I had a rash on my forehead that has gone away.

Brian H | April 17, 2013

Make sure it didn't just switch ends. They're sneaky that way.

PrimeCipher | April 17, 2013

I received 4.4 last night. Tesla mistakenly published the release notes for 4.3. I haven't noticed anything glaringly obvious that came with this update (except perhaps the rear camera visibility) but I haven't had any time to poke at it either. I have the tech package and have always been able to see a good portion of the bumper; however I have noticed a difference - there is more of the bumper visible now. I wonder if they'll publish the correct release notes somewhere - that'd be interesting.

Brian H | April 18, 2013

Sequential minor releases often have unchanged release notes.

AJC | April 20, 2013

I don't have the tech package (MS60,air,supercharger)but always had the autotilt feature on the side mirrors. Right after update 4.3 autotilt disappeared, even the autotilt box on the touch screen. Was hoping that 4.4 would fix that, but no luck. Not happy TM yanked the feature away. | April 20, 2013

@AJC - are you sure autotilt is missing? I just looked over the Tesla site's MS specs and tech-package features and it doesn't list the autotilt feature anywhere (or something like it), which makes it sound like it should be on all cars.

A few others have reported the software update "lost" the setting, although mine didn't. You may have to reset the mirrors - by going into reverse and then setting the reverse mirror positions. Then save in your driver profile. Let us know if this works for you.

jat | April 20, 2013

@AJC,TeslaTap - I also lost the autotilt settings with the 4.3 upgrade. I have the tech package with 2012 cloth seats (so no driver profiles).

The way it used to work is there was a box under settings to enable it, and then you adjust the mirrors while in reverse. I can't even turn the setting on now.

jbunn | April 20, 2013

I wish they would put more info in the release notes. Like many here, I actualy relish reading them.

Robert22 | April 20, 2013

Tesla addressing forehead rash in 4.4.1. Fixes for chafing, burning, scratching, and itching delayed until 4.5, confirmed.

hnashif | April 20, 2013

I have car w/Tech package delivered w/ 4.2. When I upgraded to 4.3 and 4.4, the tilt remained activated w/ no issues.

As for the rear view camera, after the 4.4 upgrade, the image seems wider and crisper from what I remember it before 4.4 upgrade. My reference point is parked in my garage (w/two side-by-side single car 2-car garage). Due to length of this car, I calibrate my parking crudely and try to match my spot every time I park. Having said that, I noticed that I can see more of the garage wall next to the door. I can see the entire UMC head unit now that I did remember seeing before, including the green LED on.

Obviously there are a lot of caveats in the above, but that's what it seems.

Brian H | April 20, 2013

Try pure glycerin. Works wonders on the skin, and elsewhere.

portia | April 21, 2013

have tech package, definitely noticed wider angle in the back up camera after the update to 4.4, can see bumper and a small bit of the license plate

Robert22 | April 21, 2013

Agree, definitely a larger field of view.
