Remote for Tesla app for Apple Watch, iPhone & iPad official support and feature request thread (formerly known as Remote S)

In 2015, I created an iOS app for Tesla so that Apple Watch users could control their Teslas from their watch. Since then, a large percentage of Tesla owners have started using my Remote app for their iPhones as well since it connects faster, exposes more car stats, keeps a location history, shows charging information from your last session, and has less restrictions when using Summon/HomeLink (no need to be near the car and no need to hold down the button). There's also Siri Shortcuts support so that you can do things like open your trunk by talking to Siri, combine commands in the Shortcuts app, and even summon your car by talking to your watch (see video:

I'm starting this new forum thread to answer all questions, bug reports, UI suggestions, and feature requests for the app. The app currently works for the Model S, 3 & X.

@regoapps: Does the Tesla API allow you to determine the version of a pending firmware update, and if so, would you consider adding that info to your app?

regoapps | July 2, 2017

@EVRider The API doesn't give me any information about that. It only displays the current firmware version. I always try to add whatever detail the API will give me. If there's something new in the API, I'm always quick to add it.

NKYTA | July 2, 2017

Yeah, that seems like a long shot after I played with VisibleTesla so many moons ago. Was hoping there was "new" stuff...

bunibunie | July 6, 2017

Please I would like to request for a refund. I see no different controls from the normal Tesla app. I purchased this because you mentioned that the sunroof can be opened and closed but unfortunately, that is not true. If you click on that button, it says "THIS FUNCTION IS DISABLED"

regoapps | July 9, 2017

@bunibunie There's several exclusive features that Remote S has over the official app. Those features are listed in app's description. The ability to open the sunroof fully has been disabled by Tesla fairly recently. A few months ago, it was still possible to do so. The sunroof can still be closed via Remote S and set to the vent position, though. You just can't use the app to open it fully, and no app or program will be able to do it if Tesla doesn't allow it to be done remotely.

risquared | July 10, 2017

Can the summon function go around Tesla's policy mandating to be personally around the car when executed.
Can I summon the car far from it using your app? Yes, I know it is not recommended for various reasons but I know what I am doing on my private grounds plus the car doesn't go far when summoned only 16 ft or so.

lawsteve | July 11, 2017

Ever since I updated to 17.26.26 the Remote S app has not connected to my car. Regular Tesla app is working fine. I have logged out and logged back in to both apps and also rebooted my iPhone 7, but no luck. The Remote S app still registers for the evening befor I applied the update and still shows SW ver 17.17.4. Help?

lawsteve | July 11, 2017

Please ignore my post. After several attempts I was able to connect:

1. Logged out of Remote S
2. Logged out of Tesla App
3. Terminated both programs on the iPhone (hold button and swipe up)
4. Waited a few minutes
5. Logged in on Tesla App
6. Logged in on Remote S

All is well.

regoapps | July 13, 2017

@risquared Remote S doesn't require you to be near the car when summoning. It also removes the need for continuous press for those who don't have that option to disable it.

@lawsteve Thanks for posting the solution. Never had that issue before, but I'll be sure to tell them to do that if they run into it.

khapham2311 | July 24, 2017

Can all the commands be executed by siri?

regoapps | July 25, 2017

@khapham2311 No, there isn't a way for apps to interface with Siri yet as of iOS 10.

khapham2311 | July 29, 2017

But I saw one of your videos that you could unlock your Tesla by Siri?

khapham2311 | July 29, 2017

But I saw one of your videos that you could unlock your Tesla by Siri?

regoapps | July 29, 2017

@khapham2311 I could do all the commands by Siri - even summoning the car by only talking into my Apple Watch. But I never released that feature publicly yet. Perhaps in the future I will reconsider releasing it. Reason why I never released it was a lack of interest for that feature. I asked the users in another forum, and they said it was too gimmicky.

C02Free | August 3, 2017

I forget who posted it in another thread within the last few days, but word was that all 3rd party Tesla Apps will be removed from the Apple Store and that all developers received a message alerting them to the removal.

Have you received this message or know about this?
I will be picking up a CPO hopefully very soon and have been looking over the different options and your app seems pretty great!

regoapps | August 7, 2017

@C02Free Yes, I was the one who posted that thread. Of the three other 3rd party app developers, all three also told me that they received the message that Apple would be removing their apps shortly for not having the proper permissions from Tesla to sell Tesla related apps. Presumably, all unofficial Tesla apps will be purged from the App Store. The apps are still available in the App Store right now as I'm typing this. If you're looking to get one of the 3rd party Tesla apps, now it's a good time to get one. The apps will be removed from sale any minute now. However, once you've bought the app, it can be used and redownloaded even after the app stops being sold.

My app might be gain immunity from this purge. I'm currently in talks with Tesla to obtain a contract to sell my app so that I will not this issue.

n2scuba | August 8, 2017

I'm in line for a Tesla Model 3 in a few months. Will this app work with the 3?

ejf | August 9, 2017

When does your car show up in the app? Once it starts production?

jgardner | August 9, 2017

I just downloaded Remote S. It is nicely done with a lot of additional vehicle information, and the watch app is a great addition too. Hopefully, you will be able to continue to sell it.

jgardner | August 9, 2017

@ljf, not until the car is delivered. The service center had it enabled for me within a few hours of delivery for both my cars.

regoapps | August 9, 2017

@n2scuba it should work for the Model 3. Since the Model X worked for Remote S without me changing anything, I don't see why the Model 3 wouldn't work, either (they all use the same API). But since I don't have confirmation yet from someone who has a Model 3, I cannot say definitively that it will work. Hopefully, someone with a Model 3 would report back to us if it worked.

@jgardner Thanks! It looks like Apple removed a lot of Tesla apps already from the app store a few days ago. Remote S is still for sale right now, though. They haven't removed it from sale yet.

C02Free | August 10, 2017

Just downloaded and still awaiting my CPO - can't wait to try it out!!

MarylandS85 | August 10, 2017

I’ve been using Remote S because it works with Apple Watch. I highly recommend it.

I'm joining the Tesla family in two weeks with the delivery of my new Model S 100D. I love the comments on your app. I can't wait to test it!

Lunawang439 | August 14, 2017

OMG Mr.Wong PLEASE release that feature for Remote S and Siri compatibility already!!! I can't wait some people you surveyed said no to that?!?! PLEASE!!!

adspguy | August 15, 2017

+1 Lunawang439

Hey siri, cool my tesla.
Hey siri, heat my tesla.

Sounds like something I need.

EVRider | August 15, 2017

@regoapps: It would be very useful for you to collect your documentation in one place on your web site and change the Apple Store developer site link to go there. The app has a lot of hidden features, and while I'm finding bits and pieces of documentation here, in the TMC forum, and on your web site, having everything in one place where everyone could find it would be very helpful.

Sweetride | August 15, 2017

I have the remote S app but no Apple Watch yet...maybe next there anything I can download now that could later be used on a future Apple Watch?

regoapps | August 16, 2017

Lunawang439 + adspguy if you guys really want it that badly, I guess I can implement it. I already have the code for it. I just never made the interface for it. You can see a demo of the Siri action here:

And the Siri + Apple Watch version here:

@EVRider All the hidden features are mentioned and explained when you tap on the Remote S logo on the top of the app and scroll down to the two pictures explaining the different functionalities.

All the discussions of the app used to be in the TMC forum, until the admins started asking me to pay them about $1000 a year "vendor fee" to keep my Remote S thread there open. I didn't want to because I was simply providing support for existing Remote S users on that forum and not actively telling people to go buy my app. Also I didn't like that they just abruptly blocked my account without warning and then demanded money (frankly, it felt like blackmail/extortion). Afterwards, the admin started censoring my posts on that forum so that I can't even answer questions about my app even if someone asks it. They even deleted my post explaining the situation. So, I thought, "Forgot it, I'll just start a new thread in the Tesla forums." I don't think anyone would want to wade through all 2300+ comments on that old TMC thread anyway. If they have a question, I'll reply to it here promptly.

@Sweetride Are you asking about whether there's some Remote S thing to download now to be used later on the future Apple Watch? There isn't if you already have Remote S. You can just install the Apple Watch version when you pair your Apple Watch to your phone. This can be done by going to the Watch app on your phone. And since you already have Remote S now, there will be an option to install Remote S to your watch.

EVRider | August 16, 2017

@regoapps: How would someone know that tapping the logo is the way to display help? That's not a standard iOS app feature. That's why you need documentation that people can find without help. By the way, on my iPad, I chose the option not to show commands when I configured the app, and tapping on the logo there does nothing. I also don't know how to undo that choice -- I didn't see anything in settings.

regoapps | August 16, 2017

@EVRider You're right about that. In hindsight I should have put a tutorial in the app. I mostly didn't do it because I didn't want people to be overwhelmed with the large amount of buttons they could use for the app. The interface was starting to get clustered enough with all the new added data/functionality. So I wanted users to discover hidden features on their own like an Easter Egg.

I purposefully hid the ability to get out of the no-commands mode or what I call the "kids mode". The reason why it exists is because a dad wanted to give their kids the ability to monitor his car without giving them the ability to use commands for it. To sign out of the app and change the no-commands settings, tap the "Updated at:" text underneath the blue car graphic.

john | August 16, 2017

@khapham2311: There is an iOS app for Tesla that interacts with Siri, it's called Key for Tesla. Check it out.

@regoapps: Respectfully, I use Tesla's app for most items, and Key for Tesla for the quick manner in which I can unlock and start my Model S with one command using Siri or one selection using the touchscreen. This app was created specifically for this purpose, and it's only a couple of dollars. It may benefit your app if you deliver these features so that it's within one app.

regoapps | August 17, 2017

@john Key for Tesla only allows you to use one command with Siri, right? It basically runs an unlock command each time you start up the app. So it's not really interacting with Siri, but using Siri to open the app so that it can auto-run that one command. That can get annoying if you just want to look at your car status, and don't want to unlock your car. Or if you accidentally open the app. That's why I didn't want to implement that method into Remote S.

The Siri interaction I've demonstrated in my YouTube video and planned to implement allows you to use Siri for any command. And you can open Remote S just fine without having it automatically run a command each time you start it up.

john | August 17, 2017

@regoapps: The Siri command with Key for Tesla is as follows: If the charging cable is not plugged into the car, the user can say "Hey Siri, unlock my car". That alone will unlock and start the car. Also, one can ask Siri to lock the car and ask Siri if the car is locked.

Alternatively, on iPhone 7, a firm press on the app's icon reveals a selection to unlock and start the car with one tap.

I imagine that adding this functionality to your app would be a welcome feature.

john | August 17, 2017

I just viewed your YouTube video. Very nice! I think it would be great if you implemented a function where users can unlock and start the car with one command.

EVRider | August 17, 2017

@regoapps: FYI, I installed your app on both my iPhone and iPad, but planned to use the iPad in "read-only" mode so I disabled the controls there. In practice, I don't use your app or the one from Tesla to control my car, I use them to monitor status.

One question about your app: I tried using the controls to modify my maximum charge level, which was at 85%, but the + and - buttons seemed to adjust in increments of 10%; how do I change the increments?

regoapps | August 17, 2017

@john I see. So they are doing it the proper way as well. I will try to implement this. It shouldn't be hard for me to combine the unlock and start car into one command.

Remote S already allows you firm press the app icon for unlock/lock and hvac on/off commands. But I can add the start car as well to the unlock command.

@EVRider There's two ways to do it. If you press the 85%, a slider will appear on the bottom where you can just slide it to the exact percent that you want it to be. Alternatively, you can press the Remote S logo on top and be given a table of charge presets, such as 99%, 94%, etc. That's probably the fastest way to get to the charge that you want, since it's just two taps. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, this is the interface that appears when you press the Remote S logo on top:

I would like to test the app before I buy. How do I do that? Assume I am a computer idiot - I am

regoapps | August 21, 2017

@chris_skerry The app store doesn't offer free trials for any apps. I'm not sure how to get around that. Perhaps you can ask Apple for a refund if the app isn't to your liking.

velociped77 | August 23, 2017

Actually, I'm not such a fan of the Tesla app and would only use Remote S. Would be great if the notifications were extended.
1. Start and end charging with SOC% and time
2. Software updates available

It would be nice if the update could be started directly by app.

mdmgso | August 24, 2017

Love your app.

revrev4ruach | August 24, 2017

Me too. Thanks regoapps.

@chris_skerry, try it, you'll like it!

Can you start heated steering wheel and defroster with this app? Thx

greg | August 28, 2017

Is there a way to open the charge-door from the Apple Watch? I'm new to the app and haven't been able to find it.

But I Love the iPhone app!

C02Free | August 28, 2017

@regoapps This probably sounds stupid and some will undoubtedly laugh, but... I'll be able to use this app with a 2013 MS, correct? Seems the only thing people are talking about lately is their AP2, and even all the YouTube videos I've come across, almoT all are AP1 or 2.

Finally have a pickup date scheduled for this Friday and can hardly keep the anxiousness at bay.

EVRider | August 28, 2017

@greg: Just wondering -- when would you find it easier to open the charge port using your Apple Watch vs. just pressing on the port cover?

Mchenry7 | August 28, 2017

Sounds like a great App. I'm downloading it now.

greg | August 28, 2017

EVrider, I have a 2013. The CPO demo guy couldn't get it to open by pressing and I haven't found a way either. Did the 2013s open that way? Maybe another CPO oops (I've had a few).
