San Diego to LA question

San Diego to LA question

I'm excited to have just placed an order for an S60. I went with the 60 as there was only 1 time in the past 3 years that I have driven over 100 miles in a day in my current vehicle. Looking forward over the next year, there will be 3 days that I need to head up to LA and back again in 1 day. Once to the Anaheim Convention Center (80 miles from home), and once each to UCLA and the Ontario Arena (120 miles from home). My concern is that I'll have access to chargers at the locations. All 3 locations have parking lot chargers.

Here are my questions:

1) In the nice weather of So Cal, driving 70 mph on the freeway, how much mileage loss should I expect? If I 80% charge to 185 miles, I should be able to make it back and forth to Anaheim without stopping?

2) Have you ever needed to charge and been unable to, because no spots were available at the charging locations? I'm afraid I'll show up in Ontario or UCLA and there won't be available chargers, and I'll be stuck.

Yes, I considered purchasing the 85 so I wouldn't have to worry about this, but I didn't want to spend $8,000 more for a few days a year. In fact, that would have likely put the vehicle out of my budget.

Also, I know that there are plans for a supercharger in SJC which could make a huge difference in my level of anxiety.

Thanks for any answers!

I've made the trip a couple of times, but in the opposite direction (LA to SD). Using normal highway speeds (70-75) and the toll road (that incline eats up some range) it's about 150 miles of range there and about 160 coming back even though the actual distance is about 130. I usually charge when I'm down there at a blink station and that gives me enough range to get home. Once Cappo Valley is open it will be very easy.

Why 80% charge? From everything I know, you won't harm the battery if you occasionally charge it to max just before heading out on a trip? There's no need to suffer extra range anxiety.

I recently drove from LA to SD:
Drove 112 miles down (used 118 rated miles) driving 70-72mph
Drove 115 miles back (used 142 rated miles) driving 70-80mph

302Wh/mi down
320Wh/mi back

Thanks all for your feedback! I would like to full charge it occasionally, but I've heard that's a "special occasion" type of thing because it can degrade the battery if done too much. I guess 3 times a year is a special occasion rate, right?

Tezzla, any idea why the higher Wh/mi on the way back? Do you think that's just from the extra speed?

degradation of battery with max charge is actually quite small.....

As a rule don't max charge but never be afraid either.....

The degradation really is quite small

crmohler, yes - this was my first trip & I was going both ways on 1 charge. About half way home I figured I had plenty of juice to make it so I went back to my normal driving habits (2500 miles @ 380 Wh/mi)

3X a week might be too much. But not if you drive it right away.

We havemade the LA (Westlake Village) ) to La Jolla trip several times in our 60 with no problems. We always visit the Hawthorne Supercharger (SC). This will work for you when you visit UCLA. For the Anaheim/Ontario trip you could visit the Tesla showroom at Newport Fashion Center and use their charger.

Happy travels.

Thanks for all of the info everyone!

Not anymore, the HPWC has a lock on it. I tried to charge there last week as I work about five miles away from Fashion Island, and I regularly go to lunch in the area, and was told that they changed their policy because too many Model S owners were coming to charge during the day.
This was the first time I tried to use their charger after taking delivery mid September.

For the Ontario trip, the supercharger map shows a planned SC at roughly the intersection of the 10 and the 15 on tap for this fall/winter. Our presumption is that this will be at Ontario Mills mall or possible Victoria Gardens.

Hodas, thanks for the heads up! Ontario Mills Mall would be perfect as I'm heading to the Arena across the street. I'm surprised that the Ontario Arena doesn't list any type of charging station. I'll be in Ontario in late January so maybe I'll get lucky and it will be ready.

get_amped, thanks for the heads up. I was going to hit Fashion Center for lunch on the Anaheim trip. Guess I'll know now not to rely on that one.
