Software V9: how to have THREE apps at the same time (Maps on top, Media in the middle, your app of choice at the bottom)

Software V9: how to have THREE apps at the same time (Maps on top, Media in the middle, your app of choice at the bottom)

No credit to me. I found this on Tesla Motors Club:
https://youtu.be/B6sDoOYJd90

Basically, what you can do is have Maps at the top 1/4 of the screen, a small Media window at the upper-middle part of the screen, and whichever app you want at the bottom half of the screen. Here's how:
1) Open the app you want to have on the bottom
2) Then touch the Media (music) app button so that that pops up
3) Put one finger on the top of the Media app part of the screen and another finger on the App launcher icon. Then, while holding both fingers on the screen, drag up. You will move the Media app window up and also open that last app you'd opened (the one in #1 above).

Voila! Now you can have Maps + Media + another app (could be camera, browser, energy, calendar, or phone) open simultaneously.

@MarylandS85 - You just beat me too it. I was just about to post this as well.

before the grammar police go wild, I obviously meant "You beat me to it".

sorry!

"Basically, what you can do is have Maps at the top 1/4 of the screen, a small Media window at the upper-middle part of the screen, and whichever app you want at the bottom half of the screen. Here's how: ... "

Reminds me of a joke I once heard, which I will try to repeat here although it will not be anywhere near as good as the way I heard it many years ago:
A man went to a tailor to order a custom-made suit. When the suit came in and the man tried it on, one sleeve was a bit shorter than the other. The tailor said just pull your shoulder up a bit, like this. The tails of the suit were a bit uneven, and hung low. The tailor said just hunch your shoulders a bit and lean forward, like this. The pant legs were also uneven, the tailor said just adjust you hips, like this.

Some bystanders saw the man trying on his suit and one said to the other, look at that poor crippled man. The other replied, yes, but doesn't the suit fit well?

MarylandS85 | October 10, 2018

@Yodrak
Don't hate it 'til you try it. Like many others, I would love to have the fully customizable split-screen of V8 brought back, but I will take whatever perks come my way in V9 in the mean time. And, as I've said before, even in my pre-AP Model S, so far I prefer V9 (warts and all) over V8.1, because Maps on top, Media on the bottom has been my preferred configuration anyway. Otherwise, I wouldn't have upgraded.

sentabo | October 10, 2018

Yodrak, that was funny.

Maryland, I assume you would have to go through that process every time you get in the car?

MarylandS85 | October 10, 2018

@sentabo
Not sure. I just tried it once. I'll let you know how it goes when I get back in the car. I'm going to guess that yes, it requires finger acrobatics every time. On the plus side, when I put the car in Reverse (and the Camera screen popped up), then back to Drive and Park, it didn't mess up this configuration.

Regardless, it's a nice find by whoever it was who figured it out. A mini-Nav on top, mini-Media in the middle, and Camera or Energy on the bottom sounds like a good combo, something no previous version could achieve. Having said this, I've read that the Browser on bottom in this configuration has issues.

PagemakersS75 | October 11, 2018

Can you have 50-50 with this find?

carlk | October 11, 2018

My guess is it will go back to default every time you enter the car. Fine with me though. Like MarylandS85 map on top and media on bottom has always been the way I use it. I like the new media screen much better. It's more informative and easy to use when expanded to large size especially when running USB. Also be able to minimize it to show only music in play and leave a large area for map is nice too. Sorry for people who want camera on top though. You can't win them all.

MarylandS85 | October 11, 2018

@PagemakersS75
I don't think so. If you watch the video, you can get a sense of what you can do. If you like 50/50, stick with V8.

But if you like Nav/Maps on top and Media on bottom, you have the option for small, medium, or large window size for Media, which is better than V8, as @carlk notes.

MarylandS85 | October 11, 2018

@sentabo
Just got in the car for the first time after a few hours, and the three-app screen is preserved, so maybe it will remember this preference ad infinitum. Hot diggity.

I used this on my commute this morning. It certainly helps, though also not close to what it should be. At least now I can have camera and media on at the same time. Though they aren't in the ideal positions, I no longer have to switch it back and forth like I was doing for the last 5 days.

PBEndo | October 11, 2018

In this layout the media app is not resized as a small third window it is overlapped by the lower app which makes it clear that this is a bug, not a planned feature. Which also means it may get "fixed" and disappear.

EVRider | October 11, 2018

@PBEndo: Even if it’s a bug, there are plenty of real bugs that haven’t been fixed in a long time, so I wouldn’t expect this one to get fixed anytime soon (at least not intentionally). :-)

the.hulk | October 11, 2018

Can you interact with the media player without the camera window going away?

DRFLGD | October 11, 2018

Yeah, it’s a bug, but they messed up. Now I want that, i.e 3 apps on the screen at one time.

PBEndo | October 11, 2018

@the.hulk
Yes - you can thumbs up/thumbs down, forward, pause etc. though you don't get full access to the stations/favorites

kalikikopa326 | October 11, 2018

Thank you. This is a almost how I would prefer the interface to be. Maps in the background, and multiple overlays.

PBEndo | October 11, 2018

We need a bug bounty for better control of the display - I'll put in $50 if someone finds a bug that will allow removal or replacement of the maps with other apps in the top half of the touchscreen

MarylandS85 | October 11, 2018

True, it seems to be a bug rather than a feature, but it’s still functional. For someone like me, it’s a pretty perfect combo. I get a functional mini map on top (which is actually at least as much map as you get in a “normal” car’s navigation), the important part of media control in the middle (I just stream from my phone, and the forward, reverse, and pause are the only touch screen buttons I like to use—to reduce wear and tear on my steering wheel buttons—so not having Slacker control in this configuration is no big deal for me), and energy on the bottom for nerdiness (or for tracking consumption on a road trip).

As to Tesla fixing it, you can choose not to update and keep this configuration option forever. :^)

PBEndo | October 11, 2018

@Maryland - you still can control Slacker and rate the songs, you jut can't see all of the options for favorites/Tune in, etc.

MarylandS85 | October 11, 2018

Good to know. Thanks @PBEndo.

Jeff A | October 11, 2018

Just remember, it takes two hands really so don't do this while you are driving unless you are on autopilot then there is enough time between nags to get er done. Also, kinda looks like s**t, but at least it is better.

Mathew98 | October 11, 2018

It's a 2 fingers trick while the car is parked. While driving, you can just drag the media player with one finger to the top, over navigation, to have 3 windows.

Yodrak. | October 11, 2018

"Don't hate it 'til you try it."

Bad advice. Once you try it, you've got it, like it or not. There is no "try".

"Media on the bottom has been my preferred configuration anyway. Otherwise, I wouldn't have upgraded."

And yet, you tell me that I should "try" the "upgrade" when it's not my preferred configuration?

"For someone like me, it’s a pretty perfect combo."

Good for you. Now imagine that V9 had the rearview camera as the always displayed app, with your map as an overlay at the bottom of the screen - what would you be posting about the change? You'd still be telling us how you like it?

MarylandS85 | October 11, 2018

@Yodrak

Your mileage may vary. Feel free to disagree or disregard, but there’s no need to rebut others’ evaluations point by point as if this is a debate.

I’m not trying to get you to upgrade; I’m suggesting you try it (not necessarily in your car—maybe visit the Tesla sales center or watch a YouTube video or three). I’m also asking that you not judge something you haven’t used. I’m not gloating or suggesting you need to agree with me that V9 is better than V8. I’m only giving my evaluation of software version 9 after having used it. I am also not dismissing others’ valid criticisms of the flaws in the new software or suggesting that this one size fits all or that you shouldn’t complain if you don’t like it. I’ve been consistent and clear in my posts that I’m not happy that Tesla took away the ability to split screens as we like.

I did my research before upgrading. If I preferred camera on top, I wouldn’t have installed. Since Tesla has never allowed a “revert to prior software version” option, every choosey Tesla driver should do the same careful analysis before a major update. If in such a situation I had installed it without checking into the specifics, then yes, as you note I would be unhappy, but I would realize part of the blame for my dissatisfaction would be mine. Also, I would still try to list the pros and cons objectively for others to read and judge for themselves, rather than complain vociferously about the one fatal flaw to the exclusion of all other information, failing to realize that my major complaint may not be relevant or important to others.

I have pointed out in prior posts that we collectively tend to criticize those things we hate (or think we’ll hate even before experiencing it) without considering if there are any benefits to offset said criticisms. I will suggest that your joke about a contorted man wearing an asymmetric suit does not jive with my experience with the new software and paints the world in an unnecessarily pessimistic color.

TLDR: The ability to have three apps open simultaneously on the screen was never an option in prior versions of Tesla software, so even if it’s limited and may be a bug rather than a feature, I consider it a nice feature to know about.

Yodrak. | October 11, 2018

"there’s no need to rebut others’ evaluations point by point as if this is a debate"

But it very much has become a debate, between those who like V9 because they always did it the V9 way and those who do not like V9 because they don't like being forced to do it a way they never used and can no longer do it the way they want to do it..

Well.......I guess there's at least a way to do it. Talk about a PAIN IN THE A*%!!!! And of course it resets every time you open a new one so you have to go through that dance every time!!

Hey Tesla, USER FRIENDLINESS is still a GOOD THING!!! These cars are not robots yet. We still have to DRIVE THEM! And will have to for the foreseeable future.

In this arrangement the media player covers the Supercharger icon on the maps, which happens to be something I occasionally use on the maps! On road trips I use the nav for the next supercharger on my route and so that I can then monitor energy use in the trip tab. Not a big deal, just ironic.

melmark4 | October 12, 2018

That is better than nothing. I still have the problem that my right arm blocks the rear camera view when it is on the bottom.

Mike83 | October 12, 2018

Thanks for tip and video. I like the evolution and faster screen.

PBEndo | October 12, 2018

@Mathew
I don't see a difference between driving and parking.

Yodrak. | October 12, 2018

"I still have the problem that my right arm blocks the rear camera view when it is on the bottom."

Have the arm amputated, problem solved. (See my previous post in this thread, the one on Oct 10.)

Jeff A | October 12, 2018

@PBEndo If you have the camera active as the app and go backwards it will not automatically popup parking assist. You can get it one of two ways.

1. Close the camera app and then when you go into reverse the backup screen and the park assist will pop up automatically. or

2. If camera app is active and you put it in reverse then tap the 'traffic cone' icon in the lower left corner and it will switch to the park assist view.

PBEndo | October 12, 2018

Thanks Jeff, but I was referring to @mathew98's comment that it takes 2 fingers while parked but only one while driving to open the 3 window display.
