TeslaCam and I are both confused

TeslaCam and I are both confused

Drove the car today with a new 128 MB USB drive. Red dot was on - was recording.

At home took a look. There were no videos in the TeslaCam folder. But there was a new folder "RecentClips" which contained videos in sets of three: front, left rear, and right rear, like from Sentry Mode.

But I didn't have Sentry Mode enabled; plus it doesn't record videos while driving.

My car seems to have its wires crossed. I wanted Dashcam and got Sentry Mode, but not really. I don't know of any option to record left rear and right rear while driving.

I will reboot and try a different USB and report back tomorrow.

I am so confused!

Sounds like it's working correctly. Recent Clips is the last 10 minutes of Dashcam. If you tap/hold the cam icon and get the momentary green check mark, the current 10 minute buffer is saved in SavedClips.

Sentry Mode doesn't save anything until triggered by an "event".

We got it P49X! Haha

@ronjolley, you might want to try reading page 63 of the owners's manual. It's all fully explained there.

ronjolley | May 14, 2019

Did I really do that bad of a job explaining the problem? I insert USB drive, red dot is on, drive around. When I check the USB drive, there are no videos in the TeslaCam folder.

There are videos in the RecentClips folder. They are sets of three: front, left rear, and right rear, similar to Sentry Mode. But Sentry Mode doesn't record while driving.

I don't have Sentry Mode on. I should have Dashcam videos.

I have read the manual. I have used Dashcam before - successfully.

This is "crossed wires" behavior.

@P49X - thank's you got it covered! ;)

dsvick | May 14, 2019

@ronjolley, that changed a few updates ago. Dash cam now records the front and both repeaters and stores them in the recentClips folder. Sentry mode gets stored in SavedClips when there is an event.

Ron, I think you’re thinking of an older version of dashcam, which only recorded one forward camera. The current behavior is that it records three cameras. That’s normal.

No videos land directly in TeslaCam. They all go into one of two sub-folders: RecentClips and SavedClips.

One question for the community. The part about touching and holding the icon until it turns green. With my finger covering it because I’m touching and holding, how can I tell?

ronjolley | May 14, 2019

To save, I just touch. To pause, I do touch and hold. I can see a glow (animation - as described by someone else) around my finger.

So - it now records 3 videos. The manual, dated March, still just mentions the single, forward looking.

ronjolley | May 14, 2019

Sorry - the manual is dated December 20, 2018.

gmr6415 | May 14, 2019

@ronjolley, The dash cam still works the same other than it stores video from 3 cameras instead of one. You still use the same function to save the last 10 minutes of video. It's just that it's 3 cameras now that it's saving. The same instructions in the manual still apply:

"Tap the dash cam icon, when recording, to archive the most recent ten minutes of video. The videos are saved on the drive with a unique time stamp. These saved video recordings are not overwritten by new recordings."

EVRider | May 14, 2019

@ronjolley: Are you good now, or do you still think there's something wrong? To recap, the videos in RecentClips folder are the dashcam videos that you're looking for.

Hopefully all of this will be clarified when they finally update the owner's manuals, since a lot of people are confused about the way it works (especially when you factor in Sentry Mode). The Support site doesn't have any new information about either the dashcam or Sentry Mode.

128MB? do you mean 128GB? 128MB is quite small.

ronjolley | May 14, 2019

All good now. What didn't help was the fact that I had used it several months ago when it was the single video. I stopped using until got a bigger drive.

I just got the Patriot 128GB, yes GB, drive. But I've already decided to move to a video rated SD card. USB thumb drives were never meant for this kind of heavy use.

You never said you actually pressed the button to save any clips....

ronjolley | May 14, 2019

I have and did.
