THINK before buying this car

THINK before buying this car

I have owned a Model X for a little over a year and I can definitively state that in my particular case, this was the WORSE automobile purchase that I have ever made. This car lives in the service department. I know one can sometimes purchase a "lemon" vehicle but this one takes the cake with respect to any of the 15 or so vehicles that I have owned over the years. I am going to push this auto off into the woods and leave it to rot. It is an expensive, no thrills, non luxury, computer box that has a multitude of problems. Every problem, and there are too many for me to remember them all at this posting, has always been shrugged off as an update issue, or a mechanical issue that they were aware of with this model, or something that we just found out about or a firmware issue! I am exhausted. I have begged the corporation to buy this vehicle back but of course, it is a not going to happen. This LIKE EVERY OTHER MANUFACTURER'S VEHICLE is subject to the rules that govern the contract/purchase agreement where the manufacturer always wins in our current industry's environment. Tesla is not even concerned with my isssues. They certainly will not "buy me out" of my current situation and take this problem laden machine back. They didnt even offer to exhange my current vehicle for another one that is exactly the same as which suggests that this may just be a "one off" type of situation. I may have just received an individual "lemon" vehicle. Whatever the case, I will not even think about another Tesla anything because the distastefulness that I maintain for the brand is too strong! I hate Tesla vehicles.

I hear you!
However, there are MANY people out there with lemons of all possible car brands... That's why a lemon law was created to begin with...

However, there are numerous stories of people literally abusing their Model X and still going +300k miles:
https://www.tesloop.com/blog/2018/8/2/model-x-90d-300000-miles-in-two-years

lilbean | November 30, 2018

What's the problem?

caikangze407 | November 30, 2018

Tesla does not make reliable cars. I will never expect it will be in one day. It could become one by removing all the advanced technology options in the car. Such as falcon wing doors, front welcome auto open doors, and AP. for sure, it will be more reliable.
I told my wife we will be spend a lot of time at Tesla SC after we get the MX. Picking up the car next week. Finger crossed!

burdogg | November 30, 2018

lilbean - didn't you read - way too many problems to ever tell you :)

Still love my Dec 2016 Model X - Works like a dream. 28,000 miles so far. You will have to pry it from my dead fingers to get it away from me...

lilbean | November 30, 2018

Haha, burdogg! :)

burdogg | November 30, 2018

caikangze407 - I have three now - Nov 2015 Model S vin 110xxx, Dec 2016 Model X VIN 27xxx, March 2018 Model 3 VIN 6xxx. All three perfectly reliable and no complaints.

Don't believe the stories of a few to be made out as all. They make just as reliable cars as other manufacturers.

lilbean | November 30, 2018

You’re going to push it into the woods and leave it to rot? Does your insurance company know about this insurance fraud?

burdogg | November 30, 2018

And when one talks about a piece of trim being very slightly misaligned (I have seen the pictures, and trust me, some of these complaints I feel like asking if the person lives in the real world) and that makes the car unreliable, I have to laugh...

caikangze407 | November 30, 2018

Burdogg...Lucky you!!!

bonhari03 | November 30, 2018

A forum is the wrong place to gripe about your issues with the brand without requesting some sort of solution. The fan boys live here. For every bad experience you will get 10 positive ones. I have had my MX for 13,000 miles and could not be happier with it. The title to this thread is appropriate though. One should think before buying any car. There is no perfect car. The best we can hope for is perfect for our needs. But you have to research it first. I’m sorry the OP is willing to push his car out to the woods but let us know when and where. Some of us are always looking for a deal on parts.

gtfmedicor | November 30, 2018

Having way too many problems to bore everyone with. Fact is, my X has been in service many weeks since I drove it out of the showroom March 2018. I wish I had a very good experience like some of you. Makes my back up Honda Civic look like a miracle.

Starlifter | November 30, 2018

Had the X two years now. still very pleased. maybe I give them too much slack because it's such new technology - but overall really haven't had any problems. Replaced the AC compressor, had to align the FWD a the trunk a bit. I wish they gave us an option on doing a software update because it would be nice to let others figure out first if it's good or not - but my only real issue has been the number of continentals i've replaced (4 of them) in the first 30k miles. Have two pirelli's now on the back. we will see.

dgulick | November 30, 2018

Thus far our MX has been okay. I'm not excited that features don't work as advertised b/c we have mismatched or outdated software that seemingly is supposed to fix itself but otherwise it's performing okay - but we're only 500 miles in. My complaint is with Tesla as a whole. Just today I had two conversations about this being the worst car buying experience ever. Between Tesla not seeming to care about delivery timelines, responding to questions, or even thanking you for the purchase to multi-week delays in responses to "escalated" email inquiries b/c the phone hold time was over an hour. Just feels like they are barely hanging on and enough fan boys are still buying 3's that they hope to ride out the storm. So I can't say I share your service experience, I can say I cannot promote the car and actively dissuade people from buying them.

burdogg | November 30, 2018

Why is it that someone who loves their car, has had very little problems...is termed a fan boy as if that is a bad thing. Reality is this....

I bought a Model S in 2015 - because of all the cool features etc... of the car. I was not necessarily looking for a gas alternative - in fact, had no idea what ICE even meant at the time - took me many months to figure that one out.

After driving the S for 6 months, I knew I had to try to convince my wife to let me get an X - we have a family of 6 - can't fit in the S, so every time our family went somewhere, we had to hop in the Expedition. It really got old - there is a huge difference in the drive of the cars. So finally convinced my wife and a year from ordering our S, I ordered the X. Read the forums and got a little worried from complaints at the time - way overblown - sorry, they just were. Delivered with no issues and have only had two issues - the middle seat in 6 seater had a gear that stopped working so it wouldn't tilt. Ranger came out and fixed. Other is the passenger door stopped opening all the way. Fixed. 28,000 miles. And at this point, with a third driver starting, had to get the 3 - delivered March 2018 - no issues with it yet either.

But what do i know - I am just a fan boy who is here to promote crappy products....or that is what some on here would want everyone to believe - the my fan boyism clouds my judgement - when in reality, the car sells itself. I put a friend in, let him drive and they are sold.

Sorry for those that truly have issues, but for the number of cars, they are fewer than those around here would want everyone to believe. Happy customers - don't report such on forums. People usually only seek out forums when they have a problem - so it seems overblown that all X's are terrible, etc....when in reality, majority don't - some do. Don't let those that do scare you away from an amazing product.

Trust me - I never intended to buy these cars. I owned a Nissan Altima and Ford Expedition before Tesla came around - Ford Expedition just because needed 6 seats and luggage and will not own a van. So spending this kind of money on 3 of them nonetheless - is purely because of how they drive....

Triggerplz | November 30, 2018

“Think before buying this car” Well I did think about it before buying it matter of fact it took me 9 months from order to delivery so I had plenty time to think about it, I’ve had it since May 2016 (P90DL) and it had a few minor issues which were addressed, earlier this year they opened a new service center 25 miles from me and they will be opening a new Super charging station 5 miles away, if I had to buy a car right now to replace my MX it would definitely be another MX

-----------------
Took delivery of my 100D in June 2018. Far & away the best purchase I've ever made.

It wasn't a hasty decision as this car costs 6x what my parents house cost in the 70's.

If you don't like it....buy a Hummer or some other lame ass vehicle then get out of my way.

lilbean | December 1, 2018

I THOUGHT and I BOUGHT. No regrets.

BestX | December 1, 2018

Just completed 60k kms in 1 year on my 2017 MX. Recently also got a M3 AWD. I have owned Porsche, Lexus, Merc and BMW in the recent past. NOTHING compares or even comes close!

Picking up our new MX100D 12/22/18. Little worried about the negativity about the MX, but I have been studying and thinking on this car for over a year. "Little worried" aside, we are super pumped. We are picking the are up on a Sat and taking it on our annual family holiday trip from one end of Florida to the other and back over four or five days. We are excited for the car and the new adventure of the gas alternative transportation. I will probably be a Fanbay, I kind of am already. After pulling the trigger, I only have about 1000 hours researching and buying the accoutrement needed for full immersion lol. I mean, the mats one chooses for ones new MX is a very big deal! Future Fanboy out.

Ignore the negativity & enjoy your vehicle.

I'm 10k+ Miles in & very few issues. Certainly nothing major.

Just wait until I get upgraded hardware for "free" since I purchased full-self driving. Car just keeps getting better.

Tesla Tony | December 1, 2018

It took .e 5 years of thinking hard to buy my model X. If I were experiencing so many issues I would rather salvage by selling to get what I can than rot...the forum is getting thick with Chinese and other I tersting posts..is there really an admin here watching.. any options to translate and make sure the threads would have anything relevant for the users..

SteveMost | December 1, 2018

I love my MX100D.

“TOO MANY REASONS TO STATE HERE”

Lol

Never saw him here before, prob a troll.

lilbean | December 1, 2018

+1 SteveMost

jimglas | December 1, 2018

FUD

inconel | December 1, 2018

The Model X is one of the two BEST cars I have EVER owned. The other one was a Model S.

And I had a Porsche 911 Turbo before the Teslas.

lilbean | December 1, 2018

Gotta get the 3 @inconel!

burdogg | December 1, 2018

I always laugh when the op posts and then repost his post as the first comment. And then they never return...smell at all?

I am not trying to say that some have issues...but the fear it spreads is sad...as majority don't have problems.

lilbean | December 1, 2018

I laugh because as an early adopter, it had several issues. Can't complain. I've got an X! Life is good! No regrets! All is good.

lilbean | December 1, 2018

Don't worry. Be happy. You know that song?

jjgunn | December 1, 2018

No Ragrets....

Not even a letter....

lilbean | December 1, 2018

Maybe the OP just has bad "carma".

davidahn | December 2, 2018

Bought a MS 85D in 2015. Had a baby 2018, bought a MX 100D. Totaled the MX 100D after 2 months, buying another MX 100D.

People are funny. When I like it, it’s a rational choice. When I don’t like it, anyone who likes it must be a irrational fanboy.

inconel | December 2, 2018

@lilbean yeah the Model 3 Performance is so so tempting. I don't dare do test drives because of the fear of succumbing. I am trying to save for that Tesla sports car in 2020 :)

Enzodriver | December 2, 2018

I'm loving my MX, 3 months old and only a couple of resets needed. A great car and network from a great country. So far in front then anything over here in Europe. Keep those updates coming.

jimglas | December 2, 2018

when in doubt buy both. I have and X and a 3P. X is a great hauler and mtn car, 3 is fun.

Passion2Fly | December 2, 2018

Some for me... Got a 3 RWD and then fell for a gorgeous CPO MX P90DL. I love them both! Really complementary cars... Each has its purpose...

Model - X | December 2, 2018

I love my Tesla and all cars have issues.

If you don't like it then quit your bitching and sell it.

lilbean | December 2, 2018

@inconel Thats great!

hostbar | December 5, 2018

Delivered 100D in April 2018 - some minor issues but can't complain; so far so good.

genegode | December 5, 2018

Hey OP...too many words

lilbean | December 5, 2018

THINK before reading this thread.

jimglas | December 5, 2018

Well done lilbean

caikangze407 | December 6, 2018

Love & hate...this is exactly what Tesla stands for. If I am the owner of OP's car, I probably will be pissed off too. 100k+ car that always have problems. However, it doesn't only apply to Tesla. BMW M5 / MB AMG E63 that my friends own is always have some issues here and there. MB had to buy back my friends E63 and other friend's C63 after spending too much time in the dealership. I am not sure if Tesla does the buy back.

jjgunn | December 6, 2018

Loud applause for @lilbean

TDUB | December 7, 2018

X 75D for three months. I love it and enjoy it everyday.

Jimsav1998 | December 7, 2018

I've had a Model S for 3 years and now on my 2nd year with a Model X for a total of 5 consecutive years as an owner. This might the last time I buy a Tesla. Not really because of the car - I really liked both cars, but Tesla's service has gone to heck. If you need a part or a repair you will be out of luck. Simple maintenance like wheel alignments are not done well. Last week I called them to advise I had a bad charging cable that would interrupt while charging. They said they'd send the mobile unit to check it out. That never happened. I asked if they can send me a cord and I would send them my old one. They said fine and called twice to confirm my address but then said they had to be sure of what the problem was, so they wanted me to tell them when the cord got interrupted again. I did and they confirmed they would ship the cord. Its now 9 days later and finally have a tracking number for the shipment that is due to arrive the day after the worst snow storm we will have in NC in years. That means there will be further delays and for anyone in NC who knows that they cannot handle lots of snow, I won't even be able to go to the local supercharger. I have seen customer service go down over the last 5 years while prices continue to go up for their models S and X. WHat a pity that customer service will ruin the reputation of a good car. Looking forward to the up and coming EVs of the competition

Sleepydoc1 | December 7, 2018

April 2016 vin 0050xx 50,000 miles with a couple minor issues in an early X. This car is better than Prozac. A crappy day is well removed after 5 minutes driving. Embarrass one fart can BMW like they were standing still, but they are already half way in the intersection when it turns green. Crazy fast and fun. Yeah I am a fan but there is nothing else like this car. More and more fans every day.

GranpaJohn | December 8, 2018

After two years and 61000 miles in a MS75D, I picked up my MX100D today! I have read every fear mongering story ever posted and am convinced I have been lied to. No fit and finish crimes, no sad tales of unworkable parts, no color or fabric or even noise monsters lurking in my X.
Red, just like the model S. Just changed the license plate from S to X and drove away "Gas No Mo". I am well pleased!
