Upgrading MCU

Upgrading MCU

Last Spring, Elon said that it would be possible to retrofit the new MCU in older cars. I have a 2017 Model S. I inquired about upgrading the MCU at my local Service Center but was told that it could not be done. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I spoke to my local service center this week and asked the same question. I was told that Tesla is "working on it". Hopefully that's true.

Oops, sorry. I was referring to the upgrade from HW 2.0 to 2.5, not the MCU.

@mike the upgrade they are working on is HW2.X to HW3 IF you pre-paid for FSD. There will not really be a 2.0 to 2.5 upgrade

6 months per Elon’s tweet yesterday

~6 months before it is in all new production cars. No change to sensors. This is simple replacement of the Autopilot computer. Will be done free of charge for those who ordered full self-driving.

if we are talking about the central console MCU (nVidia Tegra 3 -> AMD) I called SC couple days ago - they said there is currently a shortage of them and recommended to call later, but did not say this is impossible.

I am trying to upgrade my late 2018 model X p100d to the new MCU. I am getting mixed responses from the local service. Sometimes they say that it should be possible to upgrade, or retrofit it but nothing available at this time. The reason I’m looking into this is my recording doesn’t work and no sentry mode is available.

@syaskin23 Since you have a "late 2018" model X you already have the upgraded MCU and will have Sentry Mode as well as Dash Cam. It will be a firmware issue for you not an MCU issue. | April 2, 2019

@syaskin - Yep, MCU2 upgrade is not available. It was thought than an upgrade kit might be made available, but MCU2 is not a plug-in for MCU1 (different wiring harness).

There are owners with MCU1 and HW2.5 that have Sentry mode and dashcam, so clearly those features have zero to do requiring MCU2.

MCU2 will not get you Dashcam or Sentry mode. That requires HW2.5 - which is a combination of different cameras and a different AP processor. Now if you bought FSD, you'll get HW3.0 which has part of the features needed, but you'd still need to replace the cameras. There has been no indication so far that such an retroift is planned. I'm in the same boat (with HW2.0). | April 2, 2019

Boonedocks answered while I was writing, and he is right - if you have a late 2018, you have the right hardware. Likely you are just waiting for the software upgrade, which should arrive in the next 4 weeks. You'll looking for version 2019.8.x.

I agree also that you already have HW2.5 AND MCU2 with a late 2018 Tesla.

All late 2018 models have HW2.5 as well as MCU2 so you’ll have Sentry Mode and Dash Cam regardless of whether you bought FSD or not
