Wanna know why I bought the Cimarron and not the Model S?

Wanna know why I bought the Cimarron and not the Model S?

Pretty simple....I put together two orders, after researching both cars, and looked at cost. The S was going to come in north of $105K and the used 1982 Cimarron around $80 dollars. The S was a barn burner 0-60 but most urban driving is done 0-4 and the Cimarron had plenty of torque in that range if you revved it to 6000 rpm and then slammed the transmission into drive. Never worried about racing a Trabant or Model T from a light...I wanted discomfort, no handling, low mpg and something that I wasn't going to see 25 of every day. Is the S a nice car?...absolutely. Does it stretch the performance envelope for an electric car?...for sure. Would it create anxiety for me since I work in GM's used car marketing department?…unquestionably.
The Model S came in second place...pure and simple...on my little "how will it fit in my lifestyle" survey. I have had the Cimarron now for over 4 miles and I can state honestly that I am very happy with the Cimarron and its build/design, performance and price(as I compared...apples to apples).
No disrespect to all the S model members here...and yes, it is sad that GM has not supported the 1982 Cimarron with a strong marketing campaign that would have helped it gain an identity different from both the Chevy Cavalier and the Model S...but if I had it to do all over again I would still buy the Cimarron.

Oh, Olof, that is hysterically funny! Thank you for the laughs!

PBEndo | June 2, 2014

Can you post a pic of you next to your sweet Cimarron?

renwo S alset | June 2, 2014

Olof, does it have coat hooks? If so, I'm there.

PBEndo | June 2, 2014

You won't find Tesla owners on the Cimarron forums bragging about their car. Actually, you won't find anybody on a Cimarron forum.....

bmilesfl33 | June 2, 2014

Hilarious post!

Red Sage ca us | June 2, 2014

So... they PAID you $80, to drive away in the Cadillac Cimmaron, right?

Olof | June 2, 2014

Ok I admit it, I got paid $80 to drive it and another $80 to post this :(

jcaspar1 | June 2, 2014

Still beats a Toyota! :)

NKYTA | June 2, 2014

I just dropped NKYTA off at the SC to get my concrete-crushing-titanium-plate, so I'm MS-less and needed a free grin. Thanks Olof!

:-)

I was going to post this in the DEMOGRAPHICS thread, but figured it'd be too snarky:

I'm a 34 year old from Dallas Fort Worth. I drive a Cadillac ELR. I'm in Sales.

AlMc | June 2, 2014

Long day at work,,,,I needed that laugh! Thanks Olaf

I will race you with either mu Vega or Pinto.....

jjs | June 2, 2014

Olaf. I'm sorry to inform you but the 82' Cimarron was just recalled. Not just a single part, the entire car! As I recall, recalls is what GM excels at.

Thanks for the laugh.

dchint | June 2, 2014

Laugh? I was crying....hilarious.

Kimscar | June 2, 2014

I'm going to post this just once, so as not to exacerbate the situation. None of us should respond so that these posts die a quick death. That includes me :) Enough said.

Kimscar | June 2, 2014

Oh wait. Maybe I don't understand comedy

dchint | June 2, 2014

Out of curiosity, what do you think would be better for the Cimarron? Opticoat? Xpel? Both?

Webcrawler | June 2, 2014

Food for you.... You got what you want....

Webcrawler | June 2, 2014

Good for you...

JohnnyMac | June 2, 2014

Still laughing so hard it still hurts! Where is that OP now?

Mark K | June 2, 2014

Olof - there's some great support material out there too:

An article about the Cadillac Cimarron, "one of the 50 worst cars of all time"

http://content.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1658545_16585...

Thanks for bringing this up.

"The ELR - brought to you by the same folks who created the legendary Cadillac Cimarron."

Cadillac has a rich heritage of half-hearted work. This historical reminder will definitely "boost" Cadillac's street cred amongst us Tesla enthusiasts.

I think Waterboy got more than he bargained for by peeing on this garden.

Thomas N. | June 2, 2014

$80? Does that include tax? If yes, well hell, you've got somebody right here with his name on the seat of that '82 Cimarron.

Olof | June 2, 2014

Mark K, thanks for the support material on my car, awesome article!

Mark K | June 2, 2014

A posse of us should fly on over to DFW, pile into a Cimarron, and head straight to the nearby Cadillac dealer, to thank Waterboy personally for the thrust he just added to Model S sales.

Gasping to catch my breath!

theapple | June 2, 2014

Love it!!

Jay w | June 2, 2014

Olof this post was really good thanks

AlMc | June 2, 2014

Good news: I don't think it is part of the ignition switch recall.

Bad news: You are out $80

Good news: It may be a collector's item

Bad news: Probably will need lots of bondo to fill in the rust spots

Jamon | June 2, 2014

That's the best laugh I've had in a long time! Thanks Olaf.

Please do post pics ... or it didn't happen :)

jjs | June 2, 2014

I think you guys/gals are missing the big picture here. The Cimarron has CUP HOLDERS! (Or did they get recalled?)

AmpedRealtor | June 2, 2014

I'm totally dying here...

Red Sage ca us | June 2, 2014

Omigosh! This is why I love coming here. I'm laughing through tears of joy as well. Lots of good times...

Olof: We regret to inform you that you were ripped off. Even a whole $160 is not enough to endure the burden of both driving a 1982 Cadillac Cimarron, and having to post on the internet about how much you appreciate it on the same day. You have our most sincere condolences.

akikiki | June 2, 2014

Great post, Olof. Very clever thinking here.

michael1800 | June 2, 2014

Kudos to the faithful commenters who brought this thread to the next level with the parallel comments!

jjaeger | June 2, 2014

Olof I applaud you for the courage to come on this forum and lay our a concise and cogent explanation for your purchase decision. And as you have seen from the responses, the TM Forum participants are known for being open to different opinions & views when it comes to the MS vs. anything else. Bravo.

Beautiful post!

It's the caddy that zigs ------ priceless marketing.

Even at the age of 9, I know GM was corrupt --- ethically and spiritually.

I hope Tesla takes a 'no prisoners' approach to the other auto companies.

Show no mercy.

TeslaTap.com | June 3, 2014

In addition the Cimarron comes in special colors like hot-steaming pink that you just can't get on the Model S. I'm sure this is the key reason so many car buyers are flocking to the Cimarron!

TeslaTap.com | June 3, 2014

I know most Model S owners are really unhappy they have an empty hole under the hood. I have no idea what it could be used for. Here the Cimarron includes lots of stuff under the hood that does something or other and keeps mechanics employed for life!

TeslaTap.com | June 3, 2014

@AmpedRealtor - I wonder how many photographers died in the making of that commercial! At least you can't see all the bodies that keeled over from the carbon monoxide.
