21" Grey Wheels on non-performance car

21" Grey Wheels on non-performance car

Has anyone requested the grey wheels on a non-performance car? The greys are only shown as an option for performance cars on the Options & Pricing page. However, on the Tesla Shop page, it shows you can purchase separately at the same price as a silver. As such, I would think Tesla should allow you to purchase the greys for non-performance versions.

I sent an email to Tesla about this and they said that if I wanted to buy the grey i would have to do so separately through the Tesla store.

they would not allow me to pay $3200 for the wheels and get grey instead of silver straight from the factory when I pickup my car.

This is obviosuly super expensive so what I will do is order the 21" silver wheels option when I get my car and have them powder coated or painted dark grey/matte black through a local shop for about $50-$100/wheel.

Will be interested in doing that probably every time I change my tires to help cover curb rash on my 21" grey's!!

Does anybody know how Tesla turns the silver wheels grey? Are they painting, powder coating or something else?

I asked this very question just yesterday and the response I got was a flat no. They said that the factory would not install them on any nonperformance vehicles. Also, if you look at that accessories page on the TM site you'll notice that the wheels themselves are $3500 (w/ tires). You would need to pay $5200 if you were ordering those wheels and matching tires.

I was told no as well. I understand that it's reserved for performance only cars but why make it available in the Tesla shop and for the same price as a silver wheel? That indicates that anyone is free to get the grey wheels, performance or not, so why not just have it available upon delivery.

I agree with you Lou, its a dumb policy.

Still wondering how they get the grey look, powder coat or paint, because we could simply get the silver wheels and have them powder coated or painted just as Tesla does.
