Grammar police

Grammar police

Is it an unspoken and unwritten rule that we should correct one another's grammar in these forums? It seems like a select few participants in these forums have taken it upon themselves to police everybody's grammar. It really is annoying, self-serving and self-indulgent. And what ever the intent in correcting another person's grammar is not realized. Grammar is a product of one's culture and civilization. If Shakespeare were alive today he would probably cringe at the grammar here in these forums. To the grammar police out there please remember that this is an international website. We have folks from other countries whose first language is not English. We have people living in the United States whose first language is not English. So let us all enjoy the banter that these forums afford us and not try to appear more intelligent than we really are. Recall two of the smartest people of our time Steve Jobs and Elon use poor grammar frequently but we still respect them and don't dare correct them... | 18 juin 2013

Duz postin' multipal threadz count as grammar police?

cloroxbb | 18 juin 2013

And you thought that posting a thread about it was going to stop it? If it bothers you, then flag as innapropriate. If the "offending" post gets enough flags, then it is automatically deleted. That's how you should deal with it.

Brian H | 18 juin 2013

Multiple thread posting is a sign the writer is attempting to substitute quantity for quality.

PorfirioR | 18 juin 2013

Unfortunately, that is how these forums go. There are some users who, for whatever reason, take ownership of the forum. Like the lady in my company who takes over everybody's birthday, pregnancy, graduation, etc. Don't start routing a greeting card without checking with her or you will make a mortal enemy. LOL

It also goes beyond grammar, they also want to get the last word on every thread. They seem to want to speak from what I can only describe as an imaginary position of authoritative knowledge about Tesla, Science, etc. (the Clifford Clavin syndrome). Sometimes when I read one of their posts I imagine that their first sentence would start "I just spoke with Elon and he said..." and it makes reading those posts much more entertaining, especially if you imagine them in the voice of Cliff.

@ProfirioR. Thanks for switching on the light bulb. ...its the Clavin syndrome

Bamboo8 | 18 juin 2013

Sorry folks some how this topic got posted twice. I only meant to post it once

Some of us go back and correct ourselves. The most fun is catching one of the grammar police in a grammar mistake. If it isn't done in a mean way, it might even educate some of the 2nd language folks.

Grammar is not arbitrary; it is important to clear communications.
A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife annual and tosses it over his shoulder. "I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up." The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.”

And if "Grammar is a product of one's culture and civilization," we should try to be cultured and civilized, eh? ;)

I didn't read the whole thread but you used "its" improperly. "Its" is the possessive. You meant "it's" which is always a contraction.

@BrianH thanks for the heads-up on "it's".

Brian H | 18 juin 2013

Interestingly, pandas will eat whatever they can catch, which isn't much. If they come across a carcass, they will take the opportunity to load up on high energy food.

cloroxbb | 19 juin 2013

I love Cheers. Pretty awesome considering I was pretty young when it was on and I enjoyed it back then as we'll :)

hademarco | 19 juin 2013

Wow! Bamboo8, PorfirioR, and goneskiian, cruel....I love it!

olanmills | 21 juin 2013

Since this forum has no edit, if I make a minor type or other mistake that doesn't confuse the meaning of my post, I just let it be rather than littering this place with extra follow up posts.

Bamboo8 | 21 juin 2013

Well that was fun on to the serious stuff like swapping my battery....police let's go. Follow us

olanmills | 21 juin 2013

See what I'm talking about, I meant "typo" instead of "type" lol.
