Towable behind Motorhome

Towable behind Motorhome

Currently I tow a Grand Vitara behind my RV. It would be nice to have a Model X with us for touring areas around campsites. Charging would be there on site. This would be possible if I can disengage the drive as for car washes. I'm dreaming big!!!

It is definitely a desirable feature. I doubt it will be offered though. Tesla Motors is very particular about how their vehicles are towed. Typically they want them to be on a car carrier or flatbed truck.

With no transmission to disengage it would take a little engineering to let the front and back wheels freewheel without spinning the electric motors.

Maybe someone aftermarket will design locking wheel hubs like the ones used on four wheel drive vehicles. it would not be cheap to replace the factory drive shaft and wheel hub assembly to install them.

It may be cheaper to just buy an aluminum auto hauler trailer and not put the wear on the X while towing.

Doesn't really matter if the motors spin. They are brushless AC, so not much to wear. Towing speeds should not be very hard on the bearings I would guess. The wear should be equal to that of coasting downhill at the same speed.

You do need to avoid drag from regen. So turn regen off.

If you do this in winter, bear in mind that you will be subjecting the battery to considerable cooling from the wind. It might not be a good idea to do this in that case, or perhaps you could do the trip with a half charged battery while leaving the regen in low. That would cause a bit of extra fuel use on your RV though.

One more thing, the Model X will be at least 1,000 pounds heavier than the Grand Vitara, so don't forget to account for that.

You could just get a Fiat 500e and tow that as your runabout.
