Getting ready...are you guys planning on vanity license plates, if so what would they be?
Calif: TESLA XD
Might be superfluous but TESLA X and of course MODEL X were taken long before.
I ordered and paid for a CA vanity plate when we expected delivery in late 2014, but I believe the DMV has taken it back and is keeping my $48. Just checked, the name I chose is either taken or I still have some claim on it. I'll go on hold with the DMV for a couple hours and find out.
FYI my patient Tesla brothers and sisters here in CA, the following plates are still available: WAITING, WAIT 2YR, WEN ELON. FINALLY has been taken, probably by an optimist for September delivery of Sigs.
Picked up my Iowa plate last week, prolly will be confusing folks for a year while a wait for my mid 15k MX delivery...
'Why does that Audi have XSTATIC on the license plate?'
Ha! That's great DriverZ!
I like XSTATIC. Good thing you are in another state :-)
Not my x x
Don't know about other states, but in order to reserve a vanity plate in Washington State you have to have a VIN #.
Not in CA. You can get any plate you want but you have to pay a annual fee to keep it alive. Sort of like a parked domain name.
In IA you transfer the plates to the next car, just pay the balance due: get a credit for months left on old car, pay for months until normal renewal on new car.
I went from IMBLUE to XSTATIC, observers must think I'm bipolar.
@aesculus: In CA, I was told that you must pick up and place a vanity plate on a registered vehicle within a given time (45 days?) or you lose it. So, according to that, ordering a plate for a vehicle you don't have is risky given the unknown delivery schedule.
I asked a Tesla Rep. about registering the new car with the vanity plate when picking it up, and he said that that wouldn't work: Tesla registers the car with a standard plate, then you have to go to the DMV and make the exchange.
if you order a vanity plate, put it temporarily on a registered car, then transfer to your X after it has been registered, then that works except for the headache of three registrations: reregister Car 1 with the vanity plate, reregister Model X with the vanity, reregister Car 1 again with new standard plate.
As far as I know, the plate I ordered in August '14 is in limbo. I haven't been charged an annual renewal for it but the name is unavailable. I haven't spoken with the DMV. I don't have two hours to spend on hold.
If I'm wrong, then please advise and I'll try to get my vanity plate (or a new one) going before delivery.
You just have to fill out the app telling them you are holding the plates.
See the FAQ's. Scroll down to Personalized (ELP) and special interest plates. Look at the section on holding onto the plates or plates given as gifts. Same answer.
Thanks. I'll check it out.
I checked, all these are still available in CA
SMUG FRE (South Park reference)
FARTS OK (cuz nobody can be ZERO emissions, right??)
MUSKYSX (pronounced Musky's X)
Y BURN (dang I actually kind of like that one!)
It's kinda fun playing with that dmv website to see what's taken and still available
"MUSKYSX (pronounced Musky's X)"
Ha. No it isn't. ;)
Ahhh, the power of punctuation, or lack thereof. ;-)
BTRLATE (...than never) is actually available! HA!
My F150 has been labelled 'Model X' for nearly three years now. I could not believe that it was still available when I got it, even though it was quite early on.
Are there any Model-S owners from Ontario, Canada reading this thread? If so, what is the deal with custom license plates? Can you get a green custom license plate? If you can't and replace your plate with a custom one, can you still drive in the car pool lanes with a single occupant?
@rossRallen...like your idea and have thought of that. Wonder how that will look on my pickup? Have not decided what to go for, or even if I should. Wife does not like attention and when she drives to the bank in her car she weaves her way back to work or home looking in her rear view mirror or stand out in any way. Right, then why the dazzling diamond white MB? She also does not like to look austentatious...so same question. Fortunately she does not see these forums...otherwise I would be skinned alive.
In NJ, you can't order vanity plates until the car is registered. You could put them on an existing car like @LeonardD did but it's a hassle to transfer them, particularly if the present car is leased (like my Swapalease car). So I guess I'll have to wait until I have it and hope something good is still available.
W8 4 ME
@ernie. Let's keep our musings secret.
I want a vanity plate but can't bring myself to deal with CA DMV bureaucracy. Three times. I'll wait until I take delivery, or have my wife "gift" me the one I want, thanks to aesculus' advice.
What about XLEDOM (MODEL X backwards)
or XALSET (TESLA X backwards)
FUTURE there goes / here comes the future)
ih8udie is available in AZ....
RX 4 CO2
X2 60 N3
LUV MY X
X GT KIA
X OVR Q7
I like XALSET
Maybe XAL23T would be better?
That way in anyone's rear view mirror it would almost perfectly read TESLAX
Speaking of front plates. If you're in a state which does not require front licence plates, can your front plate say whatever you want? It wouldn't be a state tag, just a generic licence tag that says "MODEL X" or whatever.
Ross: Many will likely read that as 'exhilarate' if they know anything about the car.
@geo...WA state requires them, but wife has gone plate/commando for 8 years and not a single ticket. I will do the same and maybe after 2-3 tickets...reconsider...does not show up as a moving violation to the best of my understanding. Ticket about $125.
Ontario, TESLA MX, #911
Actually, I have never had a vanity plate and never will but they are fun to think about. I still think about a CA plate: "ABEATER". My wife thought it meant "a beater", Midwest speak for junk car. My interpretation was "abalone eater" (Northern CA sighting where abalone are plentiful. A good design avoids ambiguity.
My wife tells me no one could figure out AMP EATR. It seems so shockingly obvious. :-)
5K 2 WAIT
Y NO X
1S 1X 0E
Maryland - "Model X" on my 350Z. I was on the waitlist for X, but ordered a P85D once the AWD was offered.
