VIN# and what do those alpha-numeric codes mean

When I was growing up in the mid 60's, my best friend's Dad was a Chevrolet Dealer (if I had only known what the future had in store for me) and he taught me the code from GM and the invoice number of the vehicle. We could determine the color, engine size, interior trim, transmission ratio, cost to the dealer et al. Well, I assume my vin# from Tesla might be similar. Can anyone teach me something??

The VIN decode changed slightly for digits 7 and 8 during 2013 - presumably to accommodate the Model X

• Digit 7, Charger Type (earlier VINs) or Battery Type (later VINs):
A = 10kw Charger
B = 20kw Charger
C = 10kw Charger, w/DC Fast Charge (Supercharger hardware)
D = 20kw Charger, w/DC Fast Charge (Supercharger hardware)
H = Lithium-ion battery—high capacity
S = Lithium-ion battery—standard capacity
• Digit 8, Motor/Drive Unit & Battery Type (earlier VINs) or Motor/Drive Unit (newer VINs):
C = Base A/C Motor, Tier 2 Battery (31–40kWh)
G = Base A/C Motor, Tier 4 Battery (51–60 kWh)
N = Base A/C Motor, Tier 7 Battery (81–90 kWh)
P = Performance A/C Motor, Tier 7 Battery (81–90 kWh)
1 = Single Motor—three phase A/C induction
2 = Dual Motor—three phase A/C induction

When Gen 3 comes out they will need to reserve more digits for the production sequence!

Captain_Zap | 26 mai 2014

@TLS - They very well may need more digits before Gen III comes out. I wonder how that would work.

DonS | 27 mai 2014

VINs have the same length for all manufacturers, so they will not be adding more digits for Gen III. Gen III digit 4 will change. At that point Tesla is free to keep the existing meaning for the remaining digits, or have a completely new definition of each digit. There is no requirement for different models to use the same coding.
