Car still not waking up in February 2019? *UPDATED*

On current software version 2018.50.6.

I have been trying for the past hour now to wake up my car over 1,000 miles away to check on it. I hoped Tesla had fixed this issue by now, as I never experienced this before parking at my house and waking it up to warm every morning. It is also charging when I connect to the car at home, so that must be keeping it awake.

It is inconvenient since my car is plugged in, was charging, and completed in the middle of the night last night. I wanted to raise the charge limit before I got back but it looks like I will be unable to if it persists. The car should never go into a deep sleep knowing the charging cable is plugged in. It may have crashed like I see it do frequently.

The odd thing is that I've had it work flawlessly and wake up the car after sitting overnight not plugged in. My gut feeling is that this is just is just flat out a bug issue that has yet to be fixed.

I will update if the car wakes up eventually and let you all know. What may be happening is once the car is not in a charging state it goes into deep sleep to preserve battery life. I assume that the car will wake every couple hours or so to see if there were any pending pings to it, then it might stay awake for the next 15-30 minutes.

*UPDATE*

Hi Folks,

After trying all day to connect to my car, I finally was able to wake it up today at 3:15PM. I had been trying all day periodically and at times consecutively 4-5 times until timeout.

I tried waking my car up starting this morning at 8:00AM. It finally woke up for me when querying the car at 3:15PM. My above hypothesis that the car goes into a "deep sleep" seems correct. The car became unresponsive for 7 hours.

This happens to me every single day. Plugged in or not. Deep sleep. Sometimes it loses LTE amd needs reboot when I finally get in it. Annoying bug. I do wish they’d fix.

@Terry.k.morrow

That certainly doesn't sound normal and what I'm use to experiencing. Are you an early VIN? I would go get that checked out.

Mine works 9 out of 10 times. Never remember it giving me an issue at home parked and plugged in.

Bighorn | 2 février 2019

I saw that when I was traveling. There’d be days when I couldn’t rouse the Model 3 parked at home. The 3 app is always more sluggish and unpredictable than the S. I could usually connect the next day, so it wasn’t a permanent issue that required a hands-on intervention.

mabuck | 2 février 2019

Thanks @Bighorn. I will update post if that is the case.

Spartan24 | 2 février 2019

Thanks @mabuck. I’m seeing quite a bit out there on forums suggesting same scenarios so I figured just a bug for future update fix. I’ll get it checked out.
This is more recent vin.

Same here, never had a problem before 2018.50.6 - now 9 out of 10 times my app does not connect. Occasional touchscreen reboots help for one connection and then it is back to silence.

Justaguy | 2 février 2019

I have trouble with my phone connecting to the car. I have never had an issue waking my car up after charging. I would consider getting it checked.

In another thread someone recommended unlocking the car if you are in bluetooth range, won't help in this case. I started doing this and now I have close to 100% success rate waking up the car. Before I could see the car would be without LTE or WiFI connection for a few seconds after I got in the car. Most likely this is why it wouldn't wake up. I'm guessing unlocking the car has the side effect of triggering a reconnect.

detayls | 2 février 2019

Check your WiFi. It's not the car.

Bighorn | 2 février 2019

@detayls
I have two cars sitting in the garage on the same WiFi. It’s the car.

I wonder if you had the Stats app, and had it set to turn on the heat/cool each day at a certain time, then you would always have a chance to connect, as the car would have to wake up to do that. You don't have to set the temp high, and it only runs for 20mins.

I had a similar situation a while back. I don't remember which software.

I wanted to raise the charge limit the day before returning from vacation to get the scheduled charge. No luck with many tries. On arriving at the airport near home it connected with only a short delay.

I wish the 3 had the "always connected" option that the S has.

I am on 2018.50.6 in my TMS, and have the exact same problems - very few times am.I able to connect to the car remotely, and it seems random. It definitely is a deep sleep issue - my dashboard screen now takes 10-30 seconds to wake up every simple time I enter the car - the two issues are definitely connected..

andrei34 | 1 avril 2019

I have the same issue. Car goes into deep sleep 7 times out of 10. I contacted CS and they told me to do below, but it didn't work for me.
Thank you for reaching out to Tesla Motors. I apologize for the delayed response. When you explained what is going on with your vehicle, I can't help but think we can fix this issue with a hard reboot of the system. Follow these steps.
1st press down on the brake and both of the scroll wheels that are on the steering wheel all at the same time. You are going to hold these down for 30-60 seconds. When you see the Tesla T pop up on the touchscreen let go. Give it a few minutes to reload. This should get rid of any issues you may be having. If for some reason it does not and the issues persist, please call us to schedule an appointment for service.

Please visit our Support Page, which covers frequently asked questions about Tesla and your vehicle. If you have any further questions or concerns, you can reach Customer Support 24/7 at ServiceHelpNA@Tesla.com or by phone at 1-877-79-TESLA (83752).

Have you tried driving 88 MPH?

edhchoe | 1 avril 2019

Mine is not waking up on the app either..

jmas | 20 avril 2019

My Model 3 (2019.8.4) loses its LTE connection whenever it enters the "deep sleep" state (usually after 2 hours of inactivity). It's 100% reproducible.

Sentry mode prevents the car from entering any sleep mode, so enabling it acts as a workaround for keeping LTE active, but it causes a much higher battery drain.

If charging is scheduled and the car is into deep sleep when the programmed time arrives, it wakes up and the LTE connection is restored. However, it enters deep sleep again two hours after completing the recharge, so the LTE connection is subsequently lost.

I think that this problem is caused by faulty hardware. Maybe Model 3s can have slight differences in some hardware components (for example, the cellular modem). This could explain why some cars are suffering this problem while others do not.

Infiniti Pi | 20 avril 2019

Weird stuff happens when I hit 88 mph. Scenery outside starts stretching horizontal, focal point ahead of me narrows to a small point and then it all goes white....

kpoon.ca | 20 avril 2019

@andrei34 did that solve your problem?

Sandman89 | 21 avril 2019

I believe this is more of a problem with the Tesla app than the car. The reason for this is because I was having similar issues until I downloaded the app "Dashboard for Tesla" (3rd party app) and my issues were gone after that. The third party app is able to wake the car up 9/10 times. This leads me to believe the car is working as expected, just Tesla's app is unreliable for the model 3 anyways.

KikkoMax | 22 janvier 2020

I have this exact problem since I got the car back in November 2018.

Finally got to talking with service about it and got told to try and remove all usb keys for a while and see if the problem persists. For some (odd) reason they think it might be the cause.
