Banging noise while super charging

Banging noise while super charging

I have had my Model 3 just over a year now and in the first year I only super charged 4 times. Tesla just installed super chargers near my house. I have been there 2 times and both times during the charge I hear a small bang several times and last night I felt it under my feet. While charging I called Tesla. All he can come up with is maybe the metal in the car expanding or contracting. The outside temp was 49°. Anyone else experience this while super charging?

It happens when it gets cooler. I’ve heard it many times as have many others. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks walnotr

I'm glad you brought this up as I had the same question.

brscpo | 3 décembre 2019

Happened to me last night, first time supercharging in cooler weather..50s. A bang every so often from a different spot under the vehicle.

Glad to hear information that this is normal. I suspected as much, but the confirmation is good.

farihachaudhry | 3 décembre 2019

Yes. I hear it each time I supercharge, without exception. Even heard a neighboring Tesla bang/pop while supercharging. I assume the fans are working to keep the battery cool? Whatever it may be, I’ve learnt to ignore it.

farihachaudhry | 3 décembre 2019

Also..... I’ve heard in all kinds of temperatures, whether warmer in the 70s, or colder in the 20s-30s.

This is a known issue by Tesla. A 15 minute service visit at my local Tesla service center to install some battery vent hoses fixed the issue.

Bighorn | 3 décembre 2019

Tons of threads about this because it is normal. There is a service bulletin for updated breather valves if it bothers you.

walnotr | 3 décembre 2019

SB-19-16-010 for those interested. I’m not sure it is worth wasting the service center’s time as I heard the thunk again on the third supercharger visit after the change. Interestingly, it was in the low 70’s on a day when the air felt rather dense. I chalk it up to a quirk in the car with no real consequence.

bp | 3 décembre 2019

I wouldn’t expect that a ventilation change will eliminate all cases of this same noise, as I hear it occasionally when just driving over uneven surfaces. IIUC, the root cause is flexing sheet metal; air pressure differential (temperature or elevation induced) is only one cause of that, albeit a reliable one.

FISHEV | 3 décembre 2019

Also just noticed it while driving in colder weather. Expansion and contraction in the battery housing. I wonder if other EV's do this also?

Bighorn | 3 décembre 2019

@bp
It won’t help the flex but it lessens the oil canning of temperature and elevation.

hokiegir1 | 3 décembre 2019

@Bighorn - semi-related question -- Are service bulletins covered after the initial 50k warranty is expired, in your experience? Just need to determine if I need to put in a ticket soon to get any addressed, since we'll be over by March at the latest (possibly sooner).

garretn | 3 décembre 2019

Unless the SC lied to me my P3D+ has the vents and the noise still exists when I supercharge in cold weather. They stated engineering had them check the vents to make sure they were not clogged and that is all that was done. It's normal to hear and feel the bang several times on the floor board during charging.

Bighorn | 3 décembre 2019

@hokie
I believe service bulletins persist gratis beyond the warranty. They also usually get you a more general once over during the visit.

Firewired | 3 décembre 2019

I recently stopped by my service center and it literally took 5 minutes to place the new battery vents as per the TSB. I haven't supercharged since, so can't tell if it worked yet. Very impressed how quick it was for them to do it.

andy | 3 décembre 2019

Managed to get a small version of it on a 7kWh charger today. I also get the occasional sound going over bumps that are on the driver’s side (right hand side).

Outside temps around 3C.

andy | 3 décembre 2019

...have an audio recording of it from a supercharger visit too as the local SC had never heard of this.

joe.lynn.atp | 3 décembre 2019

I also hear that noise while driving slowly in traffic driving up a long hill. I heard it regularly last winter, then it disappeared when the weather warmed up. Now it is back. I also heard it supercharging over the weekend. It doesn’t bother me, so I’ll skip the service bulletin.

FISHEV | 3 décembre 2019

Doesn’t bother me but the fact there is a “fix” for it sounds like Tesla doesn’t think it should be happening. Wonder if there a different risks for installing vents, way for air and water to enter the battery box? The oil canning sound means its sealed tight.

Bighorn | 3 décembre 2019
FISHEV | 3 décembre 2019

So a solid need to fix since there are already breathers but they are not working if you hear the oil canning sound.

I’ll get it done.

Bighorn | 3 décembre 2019

PSA: False.

Magic 8 Ball | 3 décembre 2019

The oil canning sound persists, under some circumstances, regardless of breathers. The breathers simply equalize pressure in the case to ambient and their is no adverse effects, other than a nuisance noise, to not having this addressed otherwise it would be a recall.

Magic 8 Ball | 3 décembre 2019

their is = there are

Bighorn | 3 décembre 2019

Correct

Magic 8 Ball | 3 décembre 2019

But but but it is a gazillion dollar super duper luxury car...

M3phan | 3 décembre 2019

Think of the sound as the car gulping down energy...

Magic 8 Ball | 3 décembre 2019

The car farts, so what?

lbowroom | 3 décembre 2019

May be common, however it’s never happened to me. Hot, cold, elevation, supercharging or otherwise.

Bighorn | 3 décembre 2019

@lbow
Not all cars have it. It’s thought to have started with the elimination of insulation when Flufferbot was retired. Delineation was around 5/18 iirc.
