Tesla Trip Down Highway 1

Tesla Trip Down Highway 1

Got the call on 12/29/2012 at 2:00PM that my car was done. Hopped on a plane from Houston to San Francisco about 4 hours later. Factory tour and delivery on 12/30/2012 at 9:00AM. Drove that thing from the factory to LA down Highway 1.

The trip was a huge success. I took the car straight over to Stanford from the factory and drove around Palo Alto for a while before heading to the Gilroy Supercharger for a quick top off before heading over to Monterey and then down to Morro Bay. I charged up at Morro Dunes RV Park (they were very accommodating and interested in the car) for $25 while I slept at the motel around the corner (not that bad of a walk). Woke up the next morning with a full charge and headed down Highway 1 to the Hawthorne Supercharger.

I was slightly hesitant and used range mode and traveled at an efficient 55 - 60 mph the entire way to also enjoy the drive, stopping pretty often for pictures and to take it all in. Anyways, I arrived in both Morro Bay and the Hawthorne Supercharger with around 80 and 60 miles in range respectively.

I am using JP Logistics to ship the car back to Houston. George J. Sukunyan is the CEO of the company and made the entire trip possible, allowing me to drop off the car at any time it was convenient for me. When I arrived at his location in Burbank he had about 120 Tesla's on his lot so he is the right guy for the job. Totally great guy and a Tesla lover. His website is He charged me $1,500 to ship the car which is actually very reasonable (I have shipped many cars using other carriers and plan to use George from now on).

The trip required hardly any planning and was as effortless as the car is at whisking you away. It was absolutely an amazing experience and I highly recommend it to anyone. I have some cool photos of the car on Highway 1 that I could load if someone can explain how to do it.

Put the photos up on a website like Flickr, or imageshack, then insert the url in the standard HTML for "img". Link to a reasonable size version of the shots, or specify height and width (taking care to preserve the proportions). E.g.:

<img src="...insert URL here..." height="xxxpixels" width="yyypixels">

Quote marks remain, material between is description of their content.

Now there's a calendar pic contender if I ever saw one!

Very nice, @LiteWait !

LiteWait | 4 janvier 2013

What's wrong with me? Why can't I post a photo in HTML???

GLO | 4 janvier 2013

Yeah you! Jealous in CA. Should get the car soon but yours is beautiful! Nice coastline too!

Michael37 | 4 janvier 2013

No matter, the photos on Flickr are great. Looks like a gorgeous drive. One of these days when it's nice I need to just cruise down 1 and enjoy the scenery.

What's wrong with me? Why can't I post a photo in HTML??? (LiteWait)

The reason is that in the src attribute of your img tags, you are referencing HTML pages, not jpg files. It works if you reference the jpg file directly:

Here's an explanation:

But it may be even more convenient to just browse through your photos on Flickr:

And now for the photos themselves: They are awesome! :-) Thanks for sharing.

Grey car? Looks great!

Brian H | 4 janvier 2013

Yeah, Flickr has gone thru a few mods of its procedure for linking. Not the easiest site to use.

It looks like you only supplied the path but not the file name.

Let's see if this works:

Looks great! So JP Logistocs must be shipping for Tesla? Or are there 120 private, custom ship jobs?

LiteWait | 6 janvier 2013

JP Logistics is shipping for Tesla. I think he said they are doing most of the Tesla's in Southern California.

Very nice pictures. Especially the one along the beach. Also thanks again was nice to sit in a tesla model S for the first time.

Cyberwelly | 2 février 2013

Nice pics. Good to meet you at coffee & cars today. Hopefully I'll be able to bring my car next month.

Coffee and Cars Houston was pretty successful today. I don’t even want to begin to estimate how many people I talked to about my car. All I know is that I was dead tired when I left and felt really satisfied that I had educated so many people about the car.

The amount of people lined up along the main drag watching as cars left Vintage Park was astonishing (Thousands?). All I know is that I was lined up with some pretty impressive cars on my way out, which most people were overlooking because they were so interested in the Tesla. Photographers were obviously doing whatever they could to get a shot of my car. The best part was people yelling at me to “REV IT UP”.

Anyways, today was a lot of fun and I can’t wait until next month. Ashur - make sure you get on TMC so that you can stay up to date with the Houston people.

Brian H | 2 février 2013

Did you put it in N and floor it for those folks?

LiteWait | 3 février 2013

It didn't occur to me at the time to try that. I'll keep it in mind next month. Maybe we should get a turbine noisemaker. Where are you located anyways?

Brian H | 3 février 2013

Vancouver, BC

LiteWait - gorgeous car. I love the dolphin grey with the grey 21"s. Thanks for the photos!

ajamison | 25 mai 2013

I love those picture especially the one in front of the factory the way the light hits the car in that picture made it look awesome

For those using Flickr, get into the Share drop-down, and copy-paste the HTML block they supply. It incorporates a Flickr tooltip, which I guess is their quid pro for allowing links.

As for sizing, in any standard link include width="600" and it will automatically be sized and proportioned to fit this column.

I'm going to o the same trip in a few months when mine is ready. Thanks for letting me know it's possible and where to go. AWESOME. Thank you for posting this thread.

I've done it twice and it's very easy. On the south end there's the Atascadero Supercharger. In Big Sur, I charged at Ventana and the Post Ranch also has Tesla chargers. Plenty of places to charge in Monterrey. When in doubt, use Happy travels !
