Got the call on 12/29/2012 at 2:00PM that my car was done. Hopped on a plane from Houston to San Francisco about 4 hours later. Factory tour and delivery on 12/30/2012 at 9:00AM. Drove that thing from the factory to LA down Highway 1.
The trip was a huge success. I took the car straight over to Stanford from the factory and drove around Palo Alto for a while before heading to the Gilroy Supercharger for a quick top off before heading over to Monterey and then down to Morro Bay. I charged up at Morro Dunes RV Park (they were very accommodating and interested in the car) for $25 while I slept at the motel around the corner (not that bad of a walk). Woke up the next morning with a full charge and headed down Highway 1 to the Hawthorne Supercharger.
I was slightly hesitant and used range mode and traveled at an efficient 55 - 60 mph the entire way to also enjoy the drive, stopping pretty often for pictures and to take it all in. Anyways, I arrived in both Morro Bay and the Hawthorne Supercharger with around 80 and 60 miles in range respectively.
I am using JP Logistics to ship the car back to Houston. George J. Sukunyan is the CEO of the company and made the entire trip possible, allowing me to drop off the car at any time it was convenient for me. When I arrived at his location in Burbank he had about 120 Tesla's on his lot so he is the right guy for the job. Totally great guy and a Tesla lover. His website is http://www.jplogistics.net/. He charged me $1,500 to ship the car which is actually very reasonable (I have shipped many cars using other carriers and plan to use George from now on).
The trip required hardly any planning and was as effortless as the car is at whisking you away. It was absolutely an amazing experience and I highly recommend it to anyone. I have some cool photos of the car on Highway 1 that I could load if someone can explain how to do it.
