Google Glass + Tesla Model S = GLASSTESLA

Google Glass + Tesla Model S = GLASSTESLA

Howdy! I just made an app for Google Glass called GLASSTESLA.

Here's what it can do:

- View vehicle charging status. Start or stop charging via Glass. You can even open the charge port without having to get back into your car.

- Locate your Model S on a map and get directions to it. You can even honk the horns or flash the headlights if you still can't spot it.

- See whether the doors, trunks, or sunroof is open/closed. Of course, you can lock or unlock your car remotely and even control the sunroof too.

- You can view the car's interior and exterior temperatures. With a single tap, you can enable "auto climate" to either cool or heat your vehicle to an optimal temperature remotely.

I would love any feedback and please let me know if you find any bugs or have feedback!

I saw this a few minutes ago. Amazing.

Don't have Glass yet, but I think the idea is fantastic.

Will you be able to control the car while it is moving? When someone else is driving?

Can you check for car speed (in case you want to check on the valet)?

Tesla limits some controls while driving. A few commands may work such as venting the sunroof. Obviously honk horns or flash headlines won't.

As for car speed. Google Glass doesn't have a real time API. it can only fetch static cards at the moment. I do have the compass heading and speed data available, but can't do anything with it yet.

I follow glass and driverless car from Google. I'm pleased you've merged the two.

This only make me more likely to purchase glass when it moves beyond the explorer edition.

Thanks for posting this and doing the hard work to create something where once there was nothing.

What is the difference between this and the OEM Tesla iPhone and Android App currently available?

neil.fishenden8 | 1 luglio 2013

AH! Just realized this app is for the new Google Glasses! Very Very cool :)

jat | 1 luglio 2013

@sahdaskatta - the streaming API does let you get speed reports every 250ms while the car is moving.

Stu Hood | 1 luglio 2013

@sahaskatta: Thank you very much for building this! Would be great to have OAuth support in the vehicle API... have you talked to Tesla yet, or is there anything we can do to help in that area?

@jat: He meant that the Google Glass API doesn't provide streaming.

Andrew CS | 2 luglio 2013

@sahaskatta Does this require your Glass to be tethered to your phone? My Tesla S sees my Glass via bluetooth - but can Glass share the Tesla's data connection?

tm | 2 luglio 2013

@sahaskatta I've tested it with my Glass / Tesla and it seems to work great! Is the Tesla account login info confidential? I noticed your site uses SSL and I'm just wondering if it stores the login details or simply passes it through to Glass. Could you provide additional details? Thanks.

sahaskatta | 2 luglio 2013

@jat -- Yes, I stumbled onto that very document. And you are correct, the API does have fairly fast streaming data from the car. However, the holdup is on Google's end. Their Mirror API for Glass doesn't really make it possible to relay information in a real-time manner at the moment.

@stu -- I sure do hope they introduce OAuth soon. I really hate having to type passwords into a third party site and it sucks that I have to make users of my app do just that. Fortunately, I took some precautions was able to figure out how to make my app work without having to store either the user's tesla account email address or password.

@andrew -- Google Glass pairs to WiFi networks directly. If no WiFi is available, it connects to your smartphone over Bluetooth for internet connectivity. Tesla may offer a built-in WiFi hotspot in the near future so that passengers can get online, but they haven't mentioned or disclosed that functionality just yet. I don't think it is possible to take advantage of the vehicle's data connection just yet.

@Tanner -- I had this concern from a few others as well, please let me clarify. I am not storing your email address or password.

When you type your Tesla credentials into the authentication page on (which is over SSL), it sends those details off to Tesla's server instantly over another SSL connection and Tesla's servers return authentication cookies. These are the same cookies your browser would be storing after you log into a website.

I am storing these cookies so that my app can interact with your vehicle without having to deal with all the major security risks generally involved with storing a user's actual credentials.

It's not as optimal as I would like it to be, but I hope it eases some of the possible security concerns.

Your app has been talked about on Motley Fool for 10min, see YT:

Is Glass only going to work with Android or will it be compatible with iOS as well?

mariab8 | 16 luglio 2013

is there any way to connect with the car's nav system? I would love to have an address sent from my phone/glass to the nav.
thanks for doing this!

This app has just broken for me... I'm getting 500s on the website...
"The server has either erred or is incapable of performing the requested operation."
I've been trying to uninstall and reinstall a couple of times as it wasn't working for me.

Any ideas?

bill_rosenthal | 8 dicembre 2013

I just got my google glass. downloaded the app from and installed but it's not working for me. When I tab on the tesla card, it's only offering the option to unpin or delete the card. Any ideas what's wrong? I think this is a great idea!

Christianjacques | 8 dicembre 2013

why not the same app but for iphone

jeff | 19 dicembre 2013

If anyone would like to get Google Glass, I have 4 invites that I can give. I have to tell Google who I want to invite in the next 3 days, so let me know asap!

jeff | 19 dicembre 2013

I should add that Google Glass is not cheap .. around $1,000 plus another 200 for sunglasses lenses (optional). Since I can only invite a few people please make sure you are really wanting these and willing to pay the steep price for a beta product!! I am NOT selling mine, just offering to use my invites for fellow Model S owners!

epac | 19 dicembre 2013

Just downloaded; very cool!

Can you adjust the interior temperature? Or is the "optimal" a predetermined default setting?
