No AM Radio for Model X?

No AM Radio for Model X?

I noticed on a recent video posted on the forum that the Model X appeared to have no AM band on the radio. Would any Sigs be willing to look into this for me? I assumed the radio would be similar to the Model S which does get AM, it would be very sad if this went away.

pvetesla | 29 dicembre 2015

Bad news. The AM radio is only available in the founders or sig versions.

Haha

vperl | 29 dicembre 2015

AM radio, ? So '60ish

Mel. | 29 dicembre 2015

AM radio stations are found on Tune In.

Claudedohrn | 29 dicembre 2015

vperl, I might be a throwback, but I enjoy listening to Bloomberg in the car, which is only available on AM in the NYC area. I will not order Sirius just to listen to Bloomberg though. I guess I'll just stream some music.

I think it was a bad decision.

timf2001 | 29 dicembre 2015

My i3 doesn't have AM radio and I don't miss it. All the major AM stations I would consider listening to are available as HD sub channels.

sp_tesla | 29 dicembre 2015

No ESPN 710AM, Best sports talk radio (Yes including the currently sad situation of the LA Lakers)& DR Clapper-Weekend worrier show.

Yoyo the robot another software design Failure!

Kitmin | 29 dicembre 2015

I just looked at my window sticker with all the options and such available to my car and the radio does have AM. Hope this helps.

MrBuffer | 29 dicembre 2015

@Kitmin ~ Thanks that helps. I own an AM News and SportsTalk station and it would SO SUCK if I couldn't get my station.

MrBuffer | 29 dicembre 2015

@Timf2001 ~ Yes BMW is a no go. They claim they can't engineer an AM radio that works well in an electric car. However, Tesla did with the S so I hope they didn't adopt BMW's anti AM policy. Plus I always thought it was cool that those fancy German engineers couldn't figure it out yet the Americans at Tesla had no problem :)

Triggerplz | 29 dicembre 2015

WOW No AM radio what's next No 8 track player and no Cassette Player I'm cancelling my order.. lol

bhoskins | 29 dicembre 2015

AM stations are sometimes helpful for local DOT traffic updates.

elguapo | 29 dicembre 2015

I think @kitmin put an end to this. He/she said the window sticker includes AM. Enjoy.

Kitmin | 29 dicembre 2015

I spent a good 10-15 minutes trying to figure out how to get AM on the radio just now and couldn't figure it out but please don't take me for experienced as it took me a bit to find the biohazard button too... But the window sticker does in fact say AM so I have to imagine it's there. There's a lot of various radio/internet, Tune in, etc... so it is probably one of those buttons but nothing that just simply says AM. Sorry if I find it I will post again.

kittylitter | 29 dicembre 2015

I think someone said it is in 'tune in'.

Mark Z | 29 dicembre 2015

@Kitmin: Take another look at the window sticker. Is it AM or XM that you are reading on the sticker.

The videos that MaxK has posted clearly show only FM and XM on the screen. Two tabs, not three as on the Model S.

It would be hard to imagine that Tesla Motors would drop the AM band because of the bad reception problems in Model S. It would be a far superior solution to have Delphi or Bose supply a properly designed AM radio receiver.

The problem with no AM band is in a catastrophe emergency when cellular communication is lost and only the AM radio could connect you to important emergency information. XM would help, but not for the local channels. FM radio does not have the talk shows, but Tunein Radio works for many AM stations. Ideally the Tesla vehicles should also have an iHeartRadio app on the dash for AM and FM stations that are not on Tunein Radio due to contractual obligations with iHeartRadio.

MrBuffer | 29 dicembre 2015

@Mark Z ~ You are correct, AM news stations can support an entire local community with an unlimited amount of users/listeners. Many people don't realize that in an emergency most cellular connections get tied up including data connections. Our station has served our community in blizzards, tornadoes and floods and many listeners have credited us for being the only reliable source of information during these disasters. I hope Kitmin finds the AM band because now I'm sad again :(

Tesla please don't give up on AM radio, you did a great job making it work on the S, I know you can do it with the X.

paradis | 29 dicembre 2015

@MrBuffer - Not only can't BMW make AM work in an EV, they can't do it in an ICE either. My last 650I had the worst AM reception of any car I ever owned.

Redmiata98 | 29 dicembre 2015

The X has "AM, FM and internet streaming radio" included. Don't get thrown off by the jokers who are trying to stir up something that isn't!

MrBuffer | 29 dicembre 2015

@Paradis ~ BMW makes the "ultimate driving machine" but they make the worst radios. The first BMW I owned was a 1998 BMW 540i and it sounded awful. AM, FM, or CD didn't matter it was all terrible. I remember trying to replace the drivers (speakers) and found that the original ones were made by Nokia! They were making cell phones at the time.

@Redmiata98 ~ I will accept the hope you've given me, but may I ask where you read that? I didn't remember seeing anything that specific in the design studio.

Mark Z | 29 dicembre 2015

Here is the video that is clearly causing this thread to exist. It starts at the point where the radio is being discussed during delivery of MaxK's Model X Signature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8YRFzPdkQw&feature=youtu.be&t=532

Mel. | 30 dicembre 2015

As Mark Z's video points out, you can get pretty much any radio station on the planet with Tune In. This includes AM.
I am located in Florida but I listen to my favorite AM radio stations in Boston on Tune In.

darlin | 30 dicembre 2015

Really? another person going to drop the purchase of the worlds finest vehicle due to some VERY minor items.

ie. the second row seats down fold flat and I was going to use this $100,000.00 SUV as a cargo van.

ie. There is no am radio, I can not figure out the internet connections, so I am dropping my purchase.

Wow, what a bunch of crying, self entitled idiots.

MrBuffer | 30 dicembre 2015

@Darlin ~ No one on this thread threatened to drop their purchase. I don't feel self entitled, but I'm am seeking details and clarification on the radio.

Claudedohrn | 30 dicembre 2015

@Darlin, careful when you call someone an idiot based on your reading comprehension issues.

Redmiata98 | 30 dicembre 2015

My source is the Mulroney "window sticker" from The Founder's report, look at the pictures he provided. Headed to the airport now, will get link later if you need it. It showed up as the standard inclusions.

Mark Z | 30 dicembre 2015

Okay, for all the doubters out there, we have one more verification that AM does NOT exist on the current Model X Signature touch screen.

However, always the optimist, I have requested more information. Tesla won't answer because they don't have the Owner's Manual at Customer Service. That is one reason for the Wiki Q&A.

I wonder how much interference my GE Superradio would have in the X. This pulls in stations very nicely and one is available here:

Red Sage ca us | 30 dicembre 2015

darlin: My personal Internet Sarcasm Detector tells me that Triggerplz was joking.

MrBuffer: You are correct, of course. If AM reception is strictly through TuneIn streaming services, that may not be available during severe inclement weather. It would be better to have both the streaming services (for audio clarity) and an actual, real world AM antenna (for emergency reception).

Triggerplz | 30 dicembre 2015

@red Sage yes I was only joking I can't wait until I get my P90D...

Triggerplz | 30 dicembre 2015

@Darlin u ever heard of sarcasm

Kitmin | 30 dicembre 2015

There is TuneIn but I am not sure how I find AM on it. I literally have the window sticker in front of me right now and it says under "Interior" - "AM, FM and Internet streaming radio". There is definitely no direct button on the screen for AM. I am suppose to stop off at the service center tomorrow so I will try my best to remember to ask them how I get AM on the car and hopefully get back to you on this thread.

Farmer Dave | 30 dicembre 2015

FLASH!

MODEL X HAS NO AM RADIO!

ALSO HAS NO SPARK ADVANCE OR TILLER!

(/sarcasm)

MrBuffer | 30 dicembre 2015

@Kitman ~ thank you for looking into this, sorry to hear about the other problems you've been having. Is there any chance you could post a link to the Monroney sticker?

MrBuffer | 30 dicembre 2015

@MarkZ ~ I too put in a request to Tesla Inside Sales about the radio issue, haven't heard back but I will post if I hear anything. Thanks for taking this over to TMC, Bonnie should get a salary for all the questions she's been fielding :)

Mark Z | 31 dicembre 2015

@MrBuffer: My DS was able to look at an Owner's Manual and determine that no reference to AM was noted. FM and XM are mentioned.

A DS call late 12/30 gave the news that delivery will occur on 12/31, so more answers are forthcoming very soon!

Meanwhile, let's request an iHeartRadio app for Model X to be added. That would add the stations that are missing at Tunein.

Kitmin | 31 dicembre 2015

@MrBuffer, I'm sorry I am not sure what you mean by posting a link to Monroney sticker. And I did look at the car manual for the AM and Mark Z was correct it does not show AM in the manual.

MrBuffer | 31 dicembre 2015

@MarkZ ~ Congratulations!
@Kitman ~ I was trying to find a picture of the Monroney sticker for the Model X, where it says FM,AM, XM. I couldn't find anything online. If it's on the sticker it's likely a typo, considering no one can actually find the feature in the car.

Kitmin | 31 dicembre 2015

I was there today but they were SO swamped trying to get out all the year end deliveries that I felt bad to ask my list of questions. I know they are on an extreme deadline including 1 more X today. So I told them I will bring my car back next week instead to do what they need to do. Sorry I didn't ask about the AM station but I have that on my list for next week when hopefully they are breathing a little bit as the last quarter #s should be done. I can't imagine it's a typo on the sticker... But I guess anything is possible.

elguapo | 31 dicembre 2015

Sorry, I just can't believe it's 2015 (almost 2016) and there's actually a thread focused on this.

sp_tesla | 31 dicembre 2015

@elguapo

FYI, many great AM ONLY sport radio shows!
Especially southern California ESPN 710am!

elguapo | 31 dicembre 2015

@sp_tesla I apologize, you are correct. I am an East Coaster, and best sports radio is AM. I don't know why I didn't think about that.

sp_tesla | 31 dicembre 2015

What will happened to Tesla radio designer/coordinator job if AM stations start blasting Tesla unwise choice.

elguapo | 1 gennaio 2016

Nothing. Ultimately, it really isn't a big deal. If you want AM radio, connect your iPhone via Bluetooth or bring a radio in the car. I know sports is great, and in an emergency it's good (so get a crank radio), but the reality is AM radio stations, or any radio station at this point, likely have very little influence over TM or any other manufacturer.

Gwgan | 1 gennaio 2016

Crank/solar radio that can be carried is better for emergencies than counting on a big car to be the radio but when traveling to national parks in-car AM reception can be helpful

Claudedohrn | 1 gennaio 2016

I downloaded IHeartRadio and picked Bloomberg on my iphone. It might have taken three minutes from idea to listening, but that's because I'm an old fart.

There is another way to enjoy some unavailable AM radio at least in the Los Angeles area. Scan and look for multiple HD Radio channels. A photo will explain it best. Here is the one I could find for KFI.

One example where KFI AM 640 is available on FM HD Radio. Tesla Motors has the ability to save the numbered channel as a preset or/and favorite. It allows listening to KFI AM without using other Apps or devices but only within the FM HD signal strength area that is limited compared with KFI AM.

A portion of the Monroney sticker does show AM radio for this Signature Model X.

IMHO, an iHeartRadio App on the Tesla touchscreen is needed for AM stations not available with Tunein.

Go to the "Kitmin photos" thread. IMG_2466 answers the question on the availability of AM radio. The pix shows that BOTH AM and FM are available. Thanks for your photo Kitmin!

Mark Z | 2 gennaio 2016

Sorry, but the photos don't show the detail to see that it clearly shows FM and XM.

There is NO AM radio band.

You CAN get maybe one or two AM rebroadcasts using FM on HD Radio in Los Angeles, but it is an inadequate quantity and would only work within the range of a FM HD broadcast.

In the case of iHeartRadio stations that are NOT carried on Tunein, Tesla needs to add the iHeartRadio App. The Model X should NOT require the driver to hook up an separate device to cover this situation.

Because the Monroney Sticker says AM, it most likely was a editing error due to lack of communication within Tesla Motors. Just as we are surprised, the person entering the data for the sticker might not have believed it as well.

Look at the Owner's Manual on the touchscreen in the vehicle. There is NO AM. I will post all the photos at TMC and make them clear enough so all can see for themselves.
