I live in NYC, birthplace of the VW-sized pothole. Would the 21" wheels be a mistake? And if I end up configuring with the standard 19" wheels, can I upgrade to the 21" ones at a later time?
You can always upgrade later. There have been other discussions on this. Check out volkerize.com.
Thanks for the answer, and the search engine for the forums. Very helpful!
Aren't there enough VW drivers to fill in the potholes?
I wasn't a fan of the 21" turbine wheels when I finalized the car and I went with the 19" ones mainly for the sake of comfort and longevity. Now that I've had the car for a month I find the 19" kind of boring to look at, and I've become completely obsessed with the turbine look. My ideal wheels would be 19" turbine type. Is there any hope of ever finding these wheels for the Model S?
When I picked up my Model S, the Tesla warned me that there had been issues with potholes and the 21" wheels. While I don't have more detail, it certainly made a difference. I'd suggest talking it over with Tesla as they hardly want to sell you an option that ends up failing in some way.
I don't know what the comparison is now but I ordered the 21 inches with my car because it is less expensive to buy a second set of 19 inch. At the time I ordered, you had a choice and the price was the same for the initial order. Even though it isn't practical, I decided to go ahead and get the 21 inch because they just look so much better on the car to me, in my personal opinion. I am most certain that I will have to order 19 inch rims and tires later but it will give me about seven months to figure that out.
The low profile tires definitely mean you are more susceptible to pot holes, and they are scrape-magnets. Was down at Tesla Dania Beach today and they said they'd had a dozen or so 21" wheels in for repair in the last couple of weeks.
Drive through NYC too often for the twenty-ones.
Aftermarket option for 19" turbines, including pictures, is described here. http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/11271-19-quot-Turbine-Whee...
