I decided to try out Auto steering on a grander scale than I have ever dared try before (which had involved only very short stretches on the freeway). This time I took my X out on Sunday afternoon when I knew there wouldn't be much traffic and took it on a drive onto a near-by river canyon highway. It's a four-lane divided highway that covers about 20 miles of twisties: some broad curves, some s-curves, some sharper curves, as is typical of a river-canyon road. I set the speed limit to 60 and let 'er fly! At first, it was gut-wrenching as the car sped around curves on its own, slowing down on its own when needed. My tendency was to grab the steering wheel, but other than thumbing the volume button occasionally to let the car know I was still being vigilant, I kept my hands off the wheel. It was exhilarating, I must say, if a bit nerve-wracking. Somewhat like a Disney ride up a mountain canyon.
Next, I need to try Auto-pilot on Navigate on the same highway to get used to this new way of driving.
And don't worry, I kept my hands close enough to the steering wheel to grab it, if needed.
