Elon Musk on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Elon Musk on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

It looks like Elon Musk will be appearing on the first week of the New Late Show. He is scheduled to appear on Wednesday September 9th, three weeks before the end of the month, looks like that is the next possible date for some sort of announcement regarding the X. Although if configurations haven't started by then I would be worried.

Hoping for the best!
Tony

No, I think Tesla would convene a big media event to get full coverage of the Model X and its futuristic design and features. Hopefully still this month. Design studio could open early September, that would make sense if they keep to Elon's announced timeline.

Tesla has so far not shown much interest in timeliness. Nor communication. We'll quickly forgive them the frustrating pre-order ordeal if the Model X lives up to or exceeds our expectations.

I agree with @eric.zucker. Furthemore, his appearance on the Late Show will be definitely be used for PR and marketing of Tesla.

TaxDocMT | 24 agosto 2015

Maybe Colbert has a signature MX reservation, and Elon will deliver the first retail X to him on the show?

PhillyGal | 24 agosto 2015

@TaxDoc - That would actually be pretty brilliant. Unlikely, but brilliant!

Jonathangarner | 24 agosto 2015

@TaxDoc, you beat me to the punch. I was thinking the same. As I just learned, Stephen and Elon have some history. In 2010 Colbert stated publicly that he doubted Tesla could build an electric vehicle that people will buy. He now drives an MS. I think it is entirely possible that Colbert is a Signature holder for an MX. Talk about great marketing and PR...and free for Tesla!

pvetesla | 24 agosto 2015

FOX NEWS ALERT: Colbert had all his celebrity friends use his discount code and Elon WILL present him with his FREE MX.

Just like all FOX NEWS ALERTS.....it's B.S.

@pvtesla - couldn't resist the cheap shot, could you?

rlwrw | 24 agosto 2015

Could also be a SpaceX announcement.

Im a P85D owner near Tesla Fremont HQ. I talked to a Tesla Service Ranger last Friday who said the Model would ship next month. He said they are training the service team now on the new systems and new tech - which he said was far better than the Model S. I know it's been agony to wait with so little info, but I think it will worth a few more weeks wait.

My gut says they will announce and open orders before the Late Show appearance and Elon will use the show to take Colbert for a Ludicrous drive in NY... And promote the Model X P90D.

At this point any news if good news. Wish you are right.

I agree Tesla may well time their MX release event a couple days before the Late Night show to maximize the media exposure and PR value.

Someway or other we'll have information latest on Sept 9th. Having a fixed deadline is welcome.

I'm re-posting this from TMC:

Elon Musk will not show the Model-X on TV for the following reasons:
1.) He is a control freak and wants to reveal the X in his own way without any TV producer getting in the way with his/her own ideas
2.) He wants to dedicate enough time to the Model-X, rather than the pre-determined slice he is currently allocated
3.) He wants to broadcast information on the Model-X, rather than have a question & answer session typical on this type of talk show
4.) He wants to reveal the Model-X when first deliveries occur, which will be many weeks after Sept 9th
5.) He wants to reveal the Model-X in front of a reliable, friendly, fan-based audience (e.g. employees, reservation holders), not a TV studio audience
6.) He wants to control the web-cast of the session, rather than be at the whim of the TV studios

He'll probably have an event similar to the Model-S first delivery event.

carlk | 25 agosto 2015

@TeslaRossa I think that scenario makes sense. It's almost certain that X will be revealed on or before the show. Otherwise what Elon is going to talk? Yes we will have the Model X soon?

DriverZ | 25 agosto 2015

I agree with @vandacca that Tesla wants to be in control of the release of information and therefore the initial reveal will not be on the late show for all of the reasons he quotes from the TMC post.

However, there is also no way he would go on the Late Show and allow himself to be ridiculed about the complete absence of information about the X.

Therefore the Tesla controlled release will take place prior to the September 9th Late show taping. My guesses now are probably either Tursday September 3rd, or less likely Tuesday September 8th.

Elon flat out said that the first people to see the Model X in it's final form will be the first owners. There won't be a big reveal like the D event, to introduce the X.

I am guessing that perhaps the first owners will actually be getting their cars prior to Sept 9th. So, if/hopefully Elon brings an X to the late show, it would be in keeping with his words.

What else is going on in Elon's world (Tesla/Space X) that would warrant him going on a talk show.......?

rlwrw | 25 agosto 2015

Possibly a SpaceX announcement.

DriverZ | 25 agosto 2015

Elon can't control what Colbert will do or say. Even if Elon's intention is that he has something to say about Space X, Colbert does not have to stay mum about everything else. If Colbert thought that he had something funny to say about the X, Colbert will follow his comedic instinct and run with it.

If there is still no information about the X, then Elon is setting himself up to be a sitting duck to be ripped about how ridiculous the handling of the X roll-out has been.

Hence Elon would not take the risk of going on the Late Show at exactly that moment, if he thought there was a real chance that he could be turned into an embarrasment. Hence the X announcement will take place some time prior to the taping of that show so that Elon has nothing to be embarrassed about.

You guys kill me. Do you really think the majority of people out there are as tuned in to the happenings of the Model-X as the people in this forum? I bet most people have no idea about the Model-X and they probably associate Elon Musk more with the Tony Stark character than the Model-X.

Steven Colbert knows better than to get deep into Model-X discussion, as most watchers know nothing of it. They are going to keep the discussion at a very high level and I'll be surprised if they say anything more than a new SUV will be available soon.

We are in a little bubble here - life is very different outside the bubble.

@jordanrichard

He said there wouldn't be a big reveal, but he said it in passing months ago. He might have meant there wouldn't be a huge reveal, or that they'll ship to owners before a big reveal, or maybe he just changed his mind.

I wouldn't take what Elon says as the literal truth. Unless he's reading a fact sheet from a shipping product or something.
