Model X at the track. Looking good.

Model X at the track. Looking good.

I went to the Fremont Supercharger by way of the test track and saw what I believe are release candidate Model X. There was a black one and a white one, without camo or disguise, so I believe they are the release candidates or validation releases that are now rolling off the line. I can say that they look true to the concept design, unlike the mules we've been seeing. The front definitely does not have the pointy look, but more of the full front fascia. They look great. The falcon-wing glass top looked clear, so I wonder if they have the electrochromic tinting feature. The hinges looked curved.

As I didn't anticipate this, all I had was my trusty iphone that won't do it justice. As it came around the bend, I could see it clearly. I managed to snap these two pics as it whizzed by. I watched it again do a few more runs and wished that I had my Nikon.

Can't wait for the configurator to go live. It will not disappoint.

You might want to invest in a better camera with telephoto or zoom lens. Your pictures don't show much. Thanks for sharing anyway...

EternalChampion | 10 agosto 2015

Umm. Thanks?

Can't tell if it's a Model X, or the International Space Station.

georgehawley.fl.us | 10 agosto 2015

@Eternal: Thanks for the laugh.
@EVino: Nice idea. Looks like back to remedial Tesla X spotting 101 for you. How many times have we told you to keep the Nikon handy when in Fremont? Don't answer that.:-))

EVino | 10 agosto 2015

Haha, thanks for chuckles. I'm putting on my old fatigues and camo face paint now and will low-crawl to the track line, 200mm in tow. If you don't hear back send in the Rangers.

georgehawley.fl.us | 10 agosto 2015

I am a former Marine. We don't need no stinking Rangers.
Sounds like you are on the right "track" now.

NumberOne | 10 agosto 2015

I was so focused on the white blur in the middle of the second picture that I did not even see the black Model X in the lower part of the second picture. Naturally being there and seeing it in person must have been awesome.

EVino | 10 agosto 2015

Roger that. Devil dogs out front.

ken | 10 agosto 2015

@EVino, thanks for your efforts.

Ankit Mishra | 10 agosto 2015

Did it have that seamless front panorama glass?

Red Sage ca us | 10 agosto 2015

Note to self: Chain link fencing foils the efforts of iPhone camera lenses...

EVino: Are you sure you haven't posted the thumbnails, instead of the full resolution photos?

teslagiddy | 10 agosto 2015

@EVino,
Your written description is better than the photos. Thanks for sharing. We'll take every little scrap of X info we can get! I hope those who have low reservation numbers will post here to whet the appetite for those with high numbers. I have a feeling this wait is going to be worse than the wait for my S was.

EternalChampion | 10 agosto 2015

@GeorgeHawley

You know there is no such thing as a former Marine. From an always and forever Navy Corpsman (that spent a lot of time with you knuckleheads)

Iowa92x | 10 agosto 2015

That is a Ford Taurus SHO for all we know.

georgehawley.fl.us | 10 agosto 2015

Ah, @EternalChampion: I think you meant that there is no such thing as an Ex-Marine.

You earned a joke. A Marine officer and a Navy officer go to the men's room to urinate. Afterwards, the Navy officer carefully washes his hands but the Marine does not.

"In the Navy we are taught to wash our hands after urinating" says the Navy officer.

The Marine replies, "In the Marine Corps we are taught not to pee on our hands."

georgehawley.fl.us | 10 agosto 2015

@Evino: Kidding aside, I trust your sensibilities re: the appearance of the X. Good to hear that it looks great.

vperl | 10 agosto 2015

Georgia, your MOS ?

EternalChampion | 10 agosto 2015

Urine is typically sterile. A penis is not. I guess I'll spend my life educating Marines. ;)

KyleGoss | 10 agosto 2015

@georgehawley I heard that one in the movie "The Negotiator"

Lieutenant Danny Roman: [trying to setup Omar by a bedrom window for a sniper shot, starts a joke] Omar... A Marine and a sailor are taking a piss... The Marine goes to leave without washing up... The sailor says, "In the Navy... they teach us to wash our hands... The Marines turn to him and says...

Omar: [in sync with Danny Roman] "... in the Marines they teach us not to piss on our hands..."
[sniper takes his shot and wound Omar in the shoulder end the siege]

Also, thank you for your service.

KyleGoss | 10 agosto 2015

@EternalChampion When my 4 month old boy peed on me at the Dr's office and the doc said don't worry, it's sterile! I didn't really believe her and washed my hands anyways. That makes a lot more sense though now with your comment.

jlutz | 11 agosto 2015

George, I've been lurking on these boards for a while, and I knew there was a reason I liked you (besides the insightful posts). :)

Once a Marine, always a Marine.

Semper Fi, from a FORMER Marine and current Navy Officer (who doesn't pee on his hands).

georgehawley.fl.us | 11 agosto 2015

Apparently, I have contributing to the sabotaging of a perfectly good thread.

If a Marine buys a Model X, is he or she then an X-Marine?

sbeggs | 11 agosto 2015

Dear President,

You are so witty!!!!

georgehawley.fl.us | 11 agosto 2015

But somewhat incoherent, I see."contributed" not "contributing"
Whatever happened to Brian H.?

aaquino22 | 11 agosto 2015

So optimistic now that you mentioned that the front does not look like the mules we have all seen. Thanks for the update. I am getting ready to burn some cash. So excited!

Red Sage ca us | 11 agosto 2015

I didn't serve in the armed forces, but I wouldn't be alive if not for those who did. My Dad, and his old Brother. Someone made the mistake of showing me the movie 'An Officer and a Gentleman' (1982) before I got out of high school. It confirmed that given my upbringing on my Grandparent's farm, the last thing I needed was more discipline.

Thanks EVino!

Still has camo on the front. Soon enough though, soon enough.

EVino | 12 agosto 2015

Did you notice the front fascia? It looks fuller compared to the mule. There's a lower piece that appears to be an air dam. I can't distinguish what the green spot is.

ian t.wa.us | 12 agosto 2015

That lower lip has been present on some of the other mules too.

johnse | 13 agosto 2015

I am guessing the green mark is a timing registration mark. Much easier to accurately identify a high contrast mark against the dark car and thus get more accurate readings.

Ross1 | 13 agosto 2015

Usually if you pull down the lip on a mule (horse) it is to count its teeth to determine its age. Possibly instead of VIN nos....

bigfatmonkey | 13 agosto 2015

Swung by the track on my lunch break today and saw 3 black model x making their rounds. Also noticed 2 large white tents next to the building thats close to the track, has anyone noticed those before? Or could that be a sign of some reveal event happening soon?

carlk | 13 agosto 2015

Thanks for the pic. It looks low-slung and sporty. I think people will like it.

jordanrichard | 14 agosto 2015

In the close up you can see how the windshield becomes part of the roof.

Mannnn, insurance companies are not going to like that. I can only imagine that is going to cost a few pennies more than a regular windshield.

NumberOne | 14 agosto 2015

The Model S is also like that, and so far the Insurance companies have not had a problem with it.

Red Sage ca us | 14 agosto 2015

If the Model X has similar crash test results as compared to Model S, insurance companies won't mind one bit.

Epley | 14 agosto 2015

This is so cool! I'm sorry if others were critical of you for bringing us information we couldn't get otherwise, but I appreciate the effort!

carlk | 14 agosto 2015

@EVino Just an OT the last pic was focused on the fence instead of the car. What you have is a very challenging situation and a true test of AF tracking. There are only a handful of DSLR's in the world could do well in situation like this (tracking a fast moving car with busy foreground or background).

georgehawley.fl.us | 14 agosto 2015

Would you like to borrow some bolt cutters to open a little hole in the fence?

sbeggs | 14 agosto 2015

Haha!

jordanrichard | 14 agosto 2015

LeonardD, no the windshield of the MS does not seamlessly become part of the rood. Look at the picture again, there is no separation from the windshield area to the roof above the driver.

EVino | 14 agosto 2015

@carl, yes, it's very tricky for sure. I was using a high speed Sony 200mm Carl Zeiss zoom. The focal length is moving, so I opted for auto focus, but the fence is fooling the lens. Maybe we have professional photographers here that have tips on how to handle this situation.

eric.zucker | 15 agosto 2015

If you are close to the fence, and use a wide aperture, the fence will simply disappear. I took great bird shots at the Jurong bird park in Singapore, or crocodile shots in Australia, you'd swear these were taken in the wild.
70-200 2.8L IS USM.

grant10k | 15 agosto 2015

In that situation you'd use manual focus. It's easier to keep ahead of a moving target than it is to get the auto focus to ignore something that takes up the entire field of view.

You know where the car is going to end up. It's on a track. Just set the focus in front of the car and take the shot when it arrives.

NumberOne | 15 agosto 2015

@jordanrichard. I agree with you as to what it looks like, but the only way to really tell is to see the car from the inside. The glass can be made to appear seamless from the outside with the view from inside totally different.

ken | 15 agosto 2015

How about a lower tech solution, use a selfie stick to shoot over top of the fence.

grant10k | 15 agosto 2015

How is a selfie stick lower tech than manual focus?

Also I don't think selfie sticks are compatible with Nikons.

ken | 15 agosto 2015

Come to think of it, I think George's idea of bolt cutters would be even lower tech than my idea. Forget the Nikon, use a phone camera on video mode and my idea of a selfie stick. Let's see this thing without the fence.

EVino | 15 agosto 2015

The fence is 100' from where I'm standing. The fencing follows the outside perimeter of the track at certain sections, kind of like the NSACAR safety fencing.

I say we assemble a squad for this task, wth george.h on point, because he's a former Marine, carl as lookout, because he never sleeps, mclary to act like an idiot and jump on the track to stop the car, then we all take pictures and get the hell out of dodge before Elon arrives walking on top of a biplane, dropping snake-like projectiles.
