The Tesla Psychosis

The Tesla Psychosis

My MS is ordered, due for European delivery in September. On the face of it, now it’s just a matter of waiting. But there’s something weird going on here. I’m addicted to reading everything I can find on the MS. I’ve already had enough solar panels put on the house roof to offset my entire annual driving. I’m busy getting a charge point installed. My wife’s expecting to find me checking out carpet and curtains for the garage. I got into my trusty Jag XKR this morning, started it and thought how primitive it felt. (I mean, who “starts” a car any more?). Late at night I close my eyes and head off into Teslaland. And, to be honest, this is all based on an all-too-short morning driving a friend’s MS a few months ago.

Frankly it must be some kind of madness, I must be going crazy. After all it’s just a car, damn it. It’s just a method of traveling from A-B. So how on earth can I possibly be enslaved to the idea of a mere product? Am I a victim of brilliant marketing or is it something more?

On the other hand… I love the idea of being off the grid, driving on sunlight. And then there’s that ride, that’s stayed with me all these months. And there’s the quiet. And the acceleration. And the idea that this is how a car really SHOULD be… I guess I'm buying more than a car here, I'm buying into an entire philosophy.

But something else struck me after I ordered my MS: one of my kids died a few years ago and life has been nothing but grim since. Losing her took all of joy out of living, all the colour out of life. Ordering the MS has woken in me a sense of excitement that I’d forgotten existed. So I’m indulging my obsession. I’m allowing myself to read every word written here and head off to Teslaland at night. It may be some kind of psychosis, but my view is BRING IT ON.

And keep writing the interesting stuff, guys.

Heartbreaking. You're making me tear up. So sorry for your loss MC red will be an awesome tribute!

NKYTA | 2 agosto 2013

Tears here sorry. MC red for sure - I bet Kay had the sunny and fun personality to match her "exterior".

JPPTM | 2 agosto 2013

Leilani Munter would probably love to see your daughter's photo--maybe post it to her on the forum....she spoke fondly of you @ Teslive.

rch1708 | 2 agosto 2013

Good idea - swap some tweets with her after watching the video.

bigbit | 2 agosto 2013

Gecondeleerd Rob,

Right this moment i'm looking at my own daughter who turned 13 the 7th and i can only imagine what you are going through. Hang in there, in a few months you can ride with her every day and enjoy her presence.
I could have lost my son just a week ago. And it makes me think how insignificant most things are we worry about... Lessen to be learned here. Be kind whenever you can and if people ask why, i usually tell them so they can be kind to the next person... Works for my karma...

pebell | 2 agosto 2013

Choking up here. Rob, sterkte, man! Hope to be able to meet you some day and shake your hand. Respect.

rch1708 | 2 agosto 2013

André, thanks. Indeed, the people we have around us, especially our children, are the most important things in our lives. I've known this in theory most of my life, but Kay's life has taught me what it means in practice. Still, this threatens to go OT.

For a final comment on the subject, Kay's story can be found here:

And my parallel blog here:

Back on topic, I thoroughly enjoy the banter and debate, if not the baiting, that goes on in these forums. This is truly a psychosis that I share with a group of extremely interesting people.

For me, the MS is not the only wonderful thing to come out of California. Kay's bone marrow donor was from California too. And if I could ever reach out to that person, I would hug them forever.

We really good live in a world of unrecognised goodness.

rch1708 | 2 agosto 2013

Should be "really do".

ccbldg | 3 agosto 2013

Such a beautiful little girl... my condolences to you & your family...

rch1708 | 9 agosto 2013

My psychosis has reached a peak of intensity this week. For the first (and hopefully only) time in my life I found myself intensely wishing that I was Norwegian. I watched the few videos of the 1st Norwegian MS deliveries over and over again, trying to imagine myself in the picture. My excitement has reached such a fever pitch that to take the edge off it I've arranged a P85 test drive next week. Never had a formal test drive before - I last drove an S85 in March.

I'm hoping that a quick test drive will take the manic out of the man. Failing that, at least it will provide a sharper focus for my daydreaming.

I also think this psychosis is infectious. My 11 year old daughter remarked out of the blue over lunch the other day, "Daddy, I'm so looking forward to sitting in the Tesla. How long before it arrives?"

Good question.

EdieMilo | 9 agosto 2013

I've been trying to find some videos of the Aug 7 event.
Can you please provide a link to the videos you've been watching.

Epley | 9 agosto 2013

I just gave an hour long talk at a medical meeting...about Tesla. It's not psychosis, more "Teslove," and it's exhilirating to feel like a kid again!

rch1708 | 9 agosto 2013

Hi Edie,

I found a couple of short videos at the TMC forum here:

Not much to see, but yeah, better than nothing.

BGYWGY | 9 agosto 2013

@rch - thank you for the generating one of the best threads on here and continually reminding us that there are things much more important than our wonderful cars or even the price of parking sensor retrofits. Two of my girls share a birthday on Aug 17 (Thanksgiving is apparently a big holiday in my house) and the youngest will be turning 13. I will be thinking of you and Kay that day. God bless.

rch1708 | 9 agosto 2013

@mayowt. 17th is my birthday too! I hope that your girls have a wonderful day and you take the chance to love them to bits! Indeed, parking sensors do not 'ping' when measured on this scale.

BGYWGY | 9 agosto 2013

So another reason to celebrate! In my editing the above it seems I had my priorities in line as I skipped the part about picking my car up on the 17th (or maybe the 18th!).

rch1708 | 9 agosto 2013

No... I'm soooooooooo pit-of-the-stomach jealous.

BGYWGY | 9 agosto 2013

If you can get to Boston, I can commit to arranging a ride!

rch1708 | 9 agosto 2013

Was there in March. Maybe again later this year. But hope to have my own Tesla grin by then.

But you never know!

Brian H | 9 agosto 2013

Norway Envy Sweeps Europe!

rch1708 | 25 agosto 2013

So this week the first deliveries to Dutch and Belgian customers started. Uninvited and nevertheless unable to attend the ceremony, I duly studied every photo and watched every video. Two new owners have been keeping the Dutch TMC contingent on the edge of their seats by sharing their experiences on a daily basis. It's absolutely riveting stuff! At least for someone with my level of addiction to all things Tesla.

But the problem is that being Tesla-less has now become several powers more difficult to accept. I mean, damn it, there are now people owning and driving Model S's HERE! It's not just in TV land that people have these cars. This is intolerable, I'm practically having heart palpitations!

In trying to find a way to express myself adequately to you guys, I can only say that I'm reminded of Bill Murray in "Ground Hog Day", except I feel like an 8 year old stuck in Christmas Eve, hoping that Santa will deliver my Model S tomorrow... But TOMORROW NEVER COMES! WAAAAAAAAH!

I've never, ever been so excited and so flippin' obsessed with anything before in my life. I've bought two new aeroplanes in the past, including an Extra 300L for those in the know, and I didn't feel this excited.

Help me, PLEASE! I've still got three months to wait. WAAAAAAAAAH!

Geert.Snijders | 25 agosto 2013

@Rch: don't think about Ground hog day, but rather about Steve McQueen doing solitary in Papillon. You'll be old and grey upon delivery, but eventually you'll be FREE! Think about the 7th wave!

IF you must think about Bill Murray, then the scene with sadistic dentist Steve Martin in The little shop of horrors is all for you. Being a masochist, he loved being poked with that blunt drill. But you don't. You're torturing yourself: stop it or start enjoying it... ;D

Brian H | 25 agosto 2013

You're doomed. You will undoubtedly croak before the three months is up. Save yourself and cancel the order!

J.T. | 26 agosto 2013

@Brian H Aren't you just a ray of f*ing sunshine!

Mathew98 | 26 agosto 2013

@rch1708 - Have you decided on postponing your surgery?

rch1708 | 26 agosto 2013

@Mathew98, thanks for asking. Seeing THE specialist on the subject in September for a 3rd opinion. No decision made yet. On the one hand I have less pain and bother from it as time goes by, practically don't notice it except for a 'click' in my hip with certain movements. On the other, it will probably need to be dealt with at some point. We'll see.

A (lady) friend commented that waiting for an MS is a darn sight easier than waiting to deliver a baby. At least when my MS arrives the only pain I'll have to go through is parting with the money. Good point. I guess that my perspective has slipped somewhat and by hanging around on the forums so much with a bunch of like-minded psychotics, I failed to notice.

Perhaps someone should open a new "Tesla Detox" forum somewhere, hosting discussions on how to get Tesla out of one's system?

Brian H | 27 agosto 2013

A joke. Heard of them?

J.T. | 27 agosto 2013

@BH Yes, and I laughed. Kind of thought you'd assume a smiley face at the end of my post. Guess we're at different places in our relationship. It's not you, it's me.

Mathew98 | 27 agosto 2013

Alright boys, you can both "stick it where the sun don't shine" ;)

Yes, Brian, I'm waiting for the grammar check...

Brian H | 28 agosto 2013

Swearwords require smileys to count as jokes!

rch1708 | 28 agosto 2013

Got my VIN today. Do I need to swear to add a smiley?

J.T. | 28 agosto 2013

@rch1708 I'm rooting for you to get your car sooner rather than later , to get healthy and enjoy life again.

Brian H | 28 agosto 2013

Was it a joke?

What VIN did you get?

NomoDinos | 28 agosto 2013

Brian H - +1. Don't keep us in suspense, Rch, share the digits! :)

rch1708 | 28 agosto 2013

VIN: 21351. Yeaaaah, was there ever a sweeter number?

NKYTA | 28 agosto 2013

@ rch1708
Congrats! It will come soon, but guaranteed it will feel like six years.

NomoDinos | 28 agosto 2013

Hey, that's blackjack and the country code for Portugal!

Congrats, Rch! You deserve it more than anyone I know.

rch1708 | 28 agosto 2013

While I'm here, it's worth mentioning that my wife and a team of her friends will do a 95km non-stop walk starting tomorrow at 10:30 and finishing on Saturday lunchtime, this to raise money for the Netherlands children's cancer research charity, KIKA. My wife & one friend will walk the full 95km, the other ladies will walk 47.5km, one group during the day, one at night. This is a big deal, my wife did it last year and raised € 26,000.-.

However, this time I have promised her that when my MS arrives, if she needs to go so far, I'll drive her. Seems fair or not?

And for those of you wondering, I'm providing MTB based support & I'm the team photographer. Rucksack will be full of drinks & bananas, bike fitted with Gopro's front & back, 7D over the shoulder. Last year i cycled 75km and pretty much was in the saddle straight through the night - walking not being my thing.

Pics from last year:

rch1708 | 28 agosto 2013

Oopps, my VIN post disappeared:. My VIN is 21351 - there was never a sweeter number!

ian | 28 agosto 2013

Wooohooo! Congrats rch!

JAFIC | 29 agosto 2013

congrats and welcome to the family.

If you ever wanted to get out of the Teslove, please contact me. I can make you forget anything and everything. :)

rch1708 | 29 agosto 2013

Thanks, guys!

cfOH | 1 settembre 2013

Well, the post-delivery Tesla psychosis finally got me. I'm changed forever.

The other day, we were on a family outing in my wife's ICE car and we needed gas. I stopped into a gas station to fill up the tank, got out of the car, and started to get out my wallet. The guy next to me says "Hey, man, you need to turn off your car."

Yep, I'd forgotten to stop the engine.

Oh, and I was reminded how annoying it is to not be able to turn on the A/C remotely. Stupid hot cars...

leilanimunter | 8 settembre 2013

I finally get to contribute to my favorite Tesla thread! :) First, I want to thank everyone for the kind words on my speech at Teslive. Second, I want to thank all the posters here for their great contributions to this thread and the many laughs I have had from it. Thirdly, I have to thank Rch for starting this thread with your inspiring and touching story. We took delivery of our P85+ yesterday, and today after getting home from our first road trip, my husband Craig and I were sitting on opposite ends of our living room couch watching one of our favorite shows, Dexter, and I couldn't help but check in on my Tesla iPhone app to check on my new girl, who was in the garage charging. I update Craig on the status of her charge and he looks back at me, smiles, then tilts his iPad up to reveal that he too, was checking in on her. And so, on day two, it appears that the mutual psychosis has begun...

J.T. | 9 settembre 2013

I always thought it was pretty cool that I drive the same car that Elon Musk drives. I think it's even cooler that I drive the same car as you.

akikiki | 9 settembre 2013

@Leilani, What color? What color did you select?

J.T. | 9 settembre 2013

@akikiki Check out her thread on the General forum and you'll see pics.

akikiki | 9 settembre 2013

@jtodman, thanks, that was a good idea. However, I am no fan of facebook or instagram. I have no account, it would not let me view. So, I didn't get to see it. (What color did she pick, please?)

J.T. | 9 settembre 2013

Silver. Black rims.

akikiki | 10 settembre 2013

@jtodtman, sincerely, thanks. Looks great, I bet.
