BMW i3 BEV seems to have an independent operating system to keep the battery at a certain temperature to prevent loss of range!!

In cold situations the battery will stay at the right temperature without losing electricity from the battery pack. That sounds great to me. Maybe someone knows more about it? And if it really is that good, maybe Tesla Motors can apply it to their EV's as well?

Link? Magic energy from the Void? Perfect insulation? Pixie dust?

I read it in a Dutch article.

But I found an other English article:

Read the text above the first photo of the orange BMW i3 car.

All it says is that it is less affected by temperature changes etc., "than is typical", not that it is unaffected! Sheesh.

Actually, the projected mileage that takes into account topography and traffic is the most impressive feature.

@ Brian H

In the Dutch article it did say that it is unaffected by temperature changes. That's why I noticed it in the first place. I shall call BMW to give clarification about this one.

Brian H | 2013年3月13日

That's obviously false. As in, impossible.

I have sent an email to the BMW dealer, he will forward it to the technical people of BMW, they will reply to my email. And I will inform you about their reply. The BMW dealer will also send me a brochure of the BMW i3.

Perhaps it does give high performance and long service life, but you still can't maintain a constant temperature in an environment with a large temperature variation without providing some energy source.

Teslation | 2013年3月13日

What about weather temperature affects during the trip? Is this taken into account ?

Also when stopped four milage ranges should be displayed:
1) Current real time range left.
2). Range left after 12 hrs.
3). Range left after 24 hrs.
4) Range left after 48 hrs.

Also displayed the weather report for these time periods.

Today I reserved an BMW I3- it costs nothing and you get infos and a testdrive. We will see.. interesting is: The range extender is optional! That is a good compromise

Yes, a nice little car that will fit your garage. ;0

I heard today from local BMW dealer that i3 in Europe will be offered only for lease through their own BMW financial services. It also means that it will be available in countries only where they have their own financial services. I do not know how it works in US, but it's clearly a sign that the goal is not mass market but more of a compliance car. Seems that BMW does not want their cars running on streets after 10 years with 30 mile range to damage the brand.

FLsportscarenth... | 2013年3月15日

Lease only... hmmm smells EV1 like.

No confidence in their product to last eh?

Brian H | 2013年3月15日

I can see it now, the Great BMW Krushapalooza! i3 bits flying everywhere...

alanwwebb | 2013年3月25日

What the article says is, "an intelligent heating/cooling system which always keeps the battery at an optimal operating temperature."

Why do you suppose Tesla says to plug in your car when not driving?

Brian H | 2013年3月25日

Very little is temperature control, until it hits extreme values.
