Home charging reduced from ~36 to ~25 MPH.

I had a 2015 MS that was charging around 36 MPH at home and when I started using my wife’s M3 cable it dropped to 25 MPH. I think the MS cable was bigger but I sold my MS and bought a new one a month ago and it has the skinnier cable as well and charges at 25 MPH. Anyone else experience this?

New Gen 2 portable connector that comes with the new cars is limited to 32 Amps. Older Gen 1 was capable of 40 Amps.

Don’t know why they changed it, and even more odd- when I bought a pre-owned 2016 S from Tesla they gave me a brand new gen-2 cable. Weird.

Jeffrub your numbers don’t make sense. If for your ‘15 MS you had a HPWC wired to a 100amp circuit, your charge rate would have been 60 mph. If you had a standard 14-50 outlet, it would have been 29-30 mph.

Yup , old style cable with standard 14-50 , 50 amp breaker ,240v on 2015 MS 85D was 29 mph at 40 amps and is still 29 moh max .

Hmmm. I have a 240 outlet, it was the same one I used w old MS cable and new cable from a new MS and M3. Are you saying I can buy the older style cable and get back 36? Or just improve what I’m getting from my skinny cables?

You can use the old cable and get 40A instead of 32.

Yes the old cable definitely was at 40 AMPS. However I never got more than 31 mph. I never even heard of anyone getting 36 mph.

Two scenarios where 36 mph would fit for a North America spec car.

One is using a Gen1 UMC charging at 40 amps and they had their display set to ideal miles.

Or, they have a HPWC on a 60 amp or greater breaker and have a mid-2016 or new car with the standard 48 amp on-board charger.

Since the OP indicates their car is a 2015 MS, the first scenario with display set to ideal miles might apply.

I have had the same experience as the OP. My cable (2017 MS) quit working and was replaced by the Mobile Service. He advised this was a new Universal charger that fit all Teslas. It charges considerably slower.

The old one fits all Tesla's also.

It is much better to quote the Amperage or kW when referring to charging rates because that is a more accurate number compared to MPH. The best would be to give the Voltage and Amperage.
