Factoid: "Brain Power" (Some light humor...)

Did you know?

The average human brain consumes energy at the rate of about 12.6 watts, which about 20% of the consumption rate for the whole body at rest, which is 63 watts.
The brain apparently has no switches and consumes energy at that approximate rate day or night, awake or asleep and possibly even during a coma.

I suspect some are "dim-wits," and as a result consume less than 12w of power....

Happy Monday! :-)

The Math

—Resting metabolic rate: 1300 kilocalories, or kcal, the kind used in nutrition
—1,300 kcal over 24 hours = 54.16 kcal per hour = 15.04 gram calories per second
—15.04 gram calories/sec = 62.93 joules/sec = about 63 watts
—20 percent of 63 watts = 12.6 watts

Interesting. I remember some years ago seeing a study where they did PET scans of brains, and documented significantly higher brain energy consumption during intense intellectual activity, accounting for feelings of exhaustion similar to those from physical activity. Damned if I recall the source now, but it would seem to be at odds with yours.

We'll have to check if the phantom drain on HW2.5 is going to be less than HW3.0 ;) you know, just extending your 'dimwit' comment.

Most sources agree the brain consumes ~20% of the body's power. Sources vary on body power consumption, ranging from 60 watts to over 100 watts. Again, this post was intended for light humor.

Haha how much does Fish's brain use for precondition? Lol

Effopec | 2019年11月18日

I work in the thermal comfort field. There's tons of numbers about how much heat a body puts out. Obviously affected by activity & size. We always just generically use 100W. Nice round number.

Do you agree, or not, with the 20% allocation for the brain?

What if you precondition your brain for optimum learning?

Damn, WhiteWi wins.

"Haha how much does Fish's brain use for precondition?"

The answer is in an entirely different scale. | 2019年11月18日

If you're a hothead - is your brain consuming more power?

If you're a cool cat - is your brain consuming less power?

Inquiring minds want to know :)

jimglas | 2019年11月18日

it would be interestiing to see brain activiy during different activities.
For example, in sports would there be more cerebellar activity since a lot is muscle memory?

Effopec | 2019年11月18日

@jeb - we never tried to break it down to that level, but having spent over 50 years on this earth (and witnessing the current administration and his supporters) makes me think that there is a yuge variation.

jimglas | 2019年11月18日

a poorly functioning brain might require more energy since it is less efficient

WW_spb | 2019年11月18日

Leave politics out off here. Thanks

jimglas | 2019年11月18日

I wasnt commenting about politics
It was about brain efficiency
If you want to assert that is political
It says more about you than me

@jimglas, I am not talking about you.

never mind .......

CRAIGJFIFTY3 | 2019年11月19日

My brain uses approximately twelve watts, however, ten of those watts is used to keep my bald head warm. So, lm either very efficient or very dim.

jebinc | 2019年11月19日

Actually, watts used to ”heat the dome” come out of the other 80% of the 63 watt total!
