Sales Tax holiday 2020 - Corona Virus edition

So why can’t the state of California help businesses and consumers by waiving Sales Taxes for the remaining year of 2020?

This would help businesses get more in sales and it will help consumers stretch what little we have today. Seems like a win/win... the state still makes money from income tax.

Just a thought...

Why doesn't the state of California get rid of income tax and just go with sales tax, like some states do? It's called greed.

Its more of just a talking point/discussion starter. I don’t expect any real action to come of this. But in these creative and flexible times... anything could become a reality with the right legislation.

California like most states needs the money now to pay state employees and keep them employed. They also need to provide services

And pay Unemployment to millions of citizens out of work due to botched pandemic response by Trump/GOP.

And hire and train 10s of thousands of public health employees to test and track Covid-19 infections so we can safely get back work.

And hire and train more employees to handle increased demand for everything from food to shelter to medical care of for millions who lost their jobs or have reduced incomes

And help small businesses survive with loans and grants and hiring the people to help administer them.

Meanwhile keep all the services going from water/sewer to police to fire to education to transportation.

And help on the local governments from county to towns who are losing revenue but have no way to borrow, even states have a hard time borrowing which is why we need Democrats plan to bolster state budgets to keep supplying vital services and adding more such as Covid-19 testing and tracking.

And that too.

No matter how you do your economic relief, you will be printing money somehow. If you dont collect taxes, the government budget needs to be satisfied somehow. So they either send you a check or dont collect taxes, its all the same really. We could be seeing the next president potentially having to deal with hyperinflation.

Ah the GOP lament but then GOP Reaganomics ideology has been the greatest economic failure in 20th and 21st century promising big GDP boost to pay for tax cuts for rich, dereg of Wall St and big weapons spending produces the exact opposite, low GDP growth, massive deficits and debt and $10T in oil wars.

Lets get back to the sensible reality based government economic policy of Clinton (record consecutive surpluses, longest peacetime expansion in history) and Obama/Biden (getting US out of Bush/GOP Great Recession 1.0).

Bush II screwed up after Clinton's success and Trump screwed up after Obama's success. So clear.

The states cannot print money. The Feds do that. Otherwise I would love Tom use California dollars instead of US dollars

Tesla2018 | 23 mei 2020

California should use Pesos since that's what all the illegals there are used too.

SCCRENDO | 23 mei 2020

Yes and get the illegals to pick money off the money tree.

I mean some places in Cali have like 10% sales tax. That could easily be lowered across the board to the state minimum of 6% to start with. Its wishful thinking that cali could do 0% but something is better than nothing. At least it would show they care to help the people who live and work here.

Cali is very bloated, the people elected for these positions won’t let others come in (fresh blood rather than incumbents). But at the end of the day business’s are the ones who bank roll these guys to get elected... so they are in someones pocket the first day they show up to elected official work.

It would be interesting to see more IT engineering folks running for these positions... I think they would actually make a difference for the local communities.

Well at least you've come out from behind the curtain of "tax breaks for Covid-19" to full on right wing anti-government ideologue. Trump is the best example of what happens when such ideologues who celebrate ignorance of how government works with inexperience on how government works with an ideology that makes for bad government.

Then they say see, it doesn't work.

The "if only IT engineers ran the world" is new but completely laughable. The "if only generals ran the world" is the usual right wing result.

GOP/Newt/Reagan came in with the explicit plan of making government dysfunctional so that voters would become discouraged and not vote so that smaller, financed GOP ideologues could win, again Trump's election is the result of that policy with the second disaster president losing the democratic election.
