Had to switch Gray colors

Had to switch Gray colors

I confirmed 6/7/14 Metallic Gray and just got a call saying that color is no longer available. Looked at the new (darker) Gray and actually like it better. So I just confirmed that color. Still set for Sept 12th factory visit/delivery.

Tesla just sent me a pic of the old gray vs the new gray on the Model S. Not sure how to post pics here...I will try if there is interest.

johncrab | 04. august 2014

The new, darker gray looks stunning. I always felt the earlier was was too close to silver (and Tesla silver is worlds better than other silver, btw). New gray is really elegant IMHO.

I've got a collection of pics of the new steel grey here, including the old vs new comparison pics from Tesla:

Agree that it looks much sharper than the old grey.

I just took delivery of the dark grey. On our way to pick up, my wife had second thoughts about the color, and said that we should have gone for the silver or white. When we saw the car in person, we were floored. It's absolutely beautiful. But it's also understated, and I like the fact that this color flies a little bit under the radar. Not way below, granted, as it is a Tesla, but in NYC, every bit helps.

Glad to read the positive responses.

Grinnin'.VA | 04. august 2014

I have a Metallic Gray MS85 on order, tentatively to be delivered in October.
My Tesla still shows my order with Metallic Gray paint.
I have not received an email from Tesla related to the paint color.

BTW, what (if any) is the price of the new Steel Gray paint?

Ron :)

psrenv | 04. august 2014

Ron,
I got a phone call. And no additional cost for the new Steel Gray color.

Mel. | 04. august 2014

Tesla has 3 types of paint. Solid, Metallic and Tesla Multi-Coat are the three and gray is a Metallic.. Old Gray was called Dolphin Gray.. But both grey colors are Metallic.

erandall38 | 04. august 2014

I confirmed in late July. They gave me a choice on which color I wanted. I picked the new Grey. I think it looks much better. There seems to be a lot of dislike on the other forum... but I think that comes from old grey owners who are upset they don't get the new color.

Had to change from dark wheels to light wheels though. Dark seemed to clash too much.

franklinwino | 04. august 2014

erandall38,

I switched wheel color when I ordered (saturday) as well. Had planned on dolphin grey with grey wheels all along. Alas, no more dolphin, but I do like the steel grey a lot. However, I concur that the silver wheels look better on the new steel grey, so that's what I went with, too.

Hmmm. Confirmed 7/1/14 with dolphin grey, Late Sept delivery. I emailed the ownership advisor that I still wanted old grey and she replied I would still be able to get it. Now I'm not so sure. Haven't received call or email. Anyone else in this situation?

GralseT | 04. august 2014

I called my delivery specialist and was given the option to switch to the new grey or keep the original one .. (I'm sticking with the dolphin grey.. the new one is beautiful but feels too much like many other cars...) I like the softer look of the original grey, especially now that it's going to become a rarity!
(S85 Confirmed June 30, delivery late September... just received my VIN today!)

cantcurecancer | 04. august 2014

Oh man that new gray looks awesome. They actually make the red brake caliper option worthwhile, because that combo looks perfect.

I'm jealous.
Confirmed my order on MAY 27 for an MS85 with dolphin gray paint.
Asked for delivery mid October.

Still, no VIN, no email on new gray paint, and no delivery specialist assigned.

I'm getting antsy, wondering if my case has fallen through the cracks.

@Ron/Grinnin'

I have Oct delivery as well. Just got an email (yesterday or day before) from DS, but no VIN. Don't worry about it - they will reach out to you.

karmamule | 05. august 2014

Ron, if you don't know who your Delivery Specialist is then ask your Owner Advisor whom you worked with on your order or who contacted you if you placed it yourself. They will be able to get you talking to your Delivery Specialist. I was too impatient so ended up doing that and was in touch with my DS the next day.

BTW I confirmed on May 24th and had my VIN with the batch that went out July 18th. I'm guessing your delayed delivery date is why they haven't bothered reaching out to you yet.

Besides not having a Delivery Specialist assigned I have no idea who my Owner Advisor is. I ordered my MS85 online without any direct involvement by anyone who works for Tesla. Does anyone know who I should call? Or the phone number to call?

Thanks.

Ron :)

If I hadn't gone for the solid white with black accents look, then I'd be driving around MC Red right now! I come from a long string of silver cars so I knew going in that this was going to be different for me, and silver was nice on the MS but it didn't seem to fit it as well....This color looks like Tesla's version of gunmetal, and I do prefer it to the old gray as well.

CAPTMPL | 05. august 2014

I got my S85 in early May with the older Dolphin Grey, I chose it because while I liked the silver, the grey was just better looking. Anything darker for me gets closer to black and my black Armada always looks like it's filthy, while my silver Audi looks like it's clean all year long. I'm happy with the slightly lighter grey, but I agree that the new grey looks awesome too... To each his own, & pedal to the metal....am I right ????

Mel. | 05. august 2014

CAPTMPL,

Yes, you are correct.

TeslaLandShark | 05. august 2014

I have the original Grey. Someone on the forum said it used to be called Tiburon (Shark in Spanish) Grey. That's how I came up with the name for my car. I definitely prefer the subtle blue hue of the original Grey color to the new Grey. I'm glad to hear that new owners like the replacement Grey though.

karmamule | 05. august 2014

@Ron, lol, you are a bit adrift alone, aren't you!

I think starting with Customer Service at (877) 798-3752 would probably work. They'll probably have to look it up but someone will get back to you.

Good luck!

ROCDOC | 06. august 2014

Contacted by Tesla yesterday by phone - Dolphin Grey no longer available. Now reconsidering all choices and combinations. Uggh. Confirmed 7/1/14, scheduled delivery late September. S85.

"I think starting with Customer Service at (877) 798-3752 would probably work. They'll probably have to look it up but someone will get back to you."

I've been in contact with Tesla about this both by email and by phone.
They confirmed that I missed the cut-off for 'dolphin gray', which I still would prefer. I just need to figure out whether I want to get the new 'steel gray' or pick a different paint option.
I'm not going to complain about it. That would lead to frustration for both me and for Customer Service. Instead, I'm going to continue cheering Tesla on as they deliver exceptional cars with exceptional service.

Go Tesla!

Groanin'
For $3K or so you can get a full wrap, with any color(s), including paisley.

Grinnin'.VA | 06. august 2014

@Brian H | AUGUST 6, 2014

"Groanin'"

No need to resort to insulting me by misspelling my user name.
Here's what I said about my attitude, given this minor disappointment:

"I'm not going to complain about it. That would lead to frustration for both me and for Customer Service. Instead, I'm going to continue cheering Tesla on as they deliver exceptional cars with exceptional service." "Go Tesla!" "Groanin'"?

Sorry but we must be speaking a different language that happens to use the same alphabet and words!

Go Tesla
Ron :)

Brian H | 06. august 2014

IIRC, I saw it called Gunmetal Grey by Tesla somewhere. Maybe that's not PC-Speaky enough?

GralseT | 07. august 2014

Just got a call from the Factory... Even though I had discussed this in length both verbally and via email with my delivery specialist, who had confirmed I could still get my Model S in Dolphin Grey, they are now telling me that it's discontinued and my options are to either take the new grey, or to switch to another color.

Of course I'm still excited about getting my model S, but must say it's really disappointing, especially after having a prolonged conversation about it with my DS.

Now I have another round of decision making to go through......

Brian H | 08. august 2014

I guess there was a small window where the cutoff for using Dolphin in the Paint Center was nearing, and you could choose to be on the near or far side of it. But once all the available slots on the near side were filled, the switchover became "hard" -- Gunmetal only.

I'm one of the folks waiting for an October delivery on my order for an MS with paint option "metallic gray". Tesla HQ contacted me to tell me that the delivery cutoff date for the 'old' (dolphin) gray was 8/24; after then the old dolphin gray will no longer be available. They told me that the 'new' (steel) gray will be automatically put on my MS unless I select a different color. I haven't yet figured out which option to select.

Ron :)

Everything you wanted to know about Tesla's Grey:

I've seen Tesla use both "Dolphin" and "Tiburon" as the name for the now discontinued grey, but more often they just called it Grey. The car's printed invoice also just states "Grey" (at least in 2013).

The new official name is "Steel" Grey.

On the paint samples at the Tesla stores, they have labels "Tiburon" and "Steel".

The Tesla factory has 10 paint lines, and it is both costly and time-consuming to change a line's color. Once changed, they are not going to switch back, and is the reason Dolphin grey is no longer available. I expect the switchover happened during the factory shutdown at the end of July. Those owners who could choose were shifted in production to run through the factory either before this point (Dolphin Grey) or after this point (Steel Grey).

Now between Gray and Grey, Gray is the American spelling, and Grey is the British spelling, but Tesla uses Grey fairly consistently. This is true on the printed invoice, order section of the website for the paint and the grey leather (using the USA web portal).
