Opening the driver side door with fob

Opening the driver side door with fob

is there a way to open the driver side door using the key fob? It is inconvenient to press the door handle. All the other doors can be opened with the fob, but the driver side door cannot? Sounds illogical.

Redmiata98 | 10. juli 2016

Do not think hat is currently available but:
"When you walk up to Model X carrying your key, doors automatically unlock and pressing the driver's door handle partially opens the door. If the Auto Front Door setting is turned on, you do not need to touch the door handle. Instead, the door automatically opens as you approach Model X and close as you walk away from it."

lilbean | 10. juli 2016

Double clicking the top of the key fob opens the door.

jlxjl | 10. juli 2016

Mine just unlocks the door.

jlxjl | 10. juli 2016

@lilbean, do you have the auto present door config? Mine is just a basic config. On the control/setting, I don't have an option to turn on Auto Front Door.

lilbean | 10. juli 2016

@jlxjl, I do but I thought a recent update made the fob unlock by double clicking. Do you have the most recent update?

jlxjl | 10. juli 2016

I don't know if it is the latest (I have the car about 2 weeks), but the software version is 7.1.

lilbean | 10. juli 2016

I'm not sure which update it was. I know that update came out over two weeks ago.

socalsam | 10. juli 2016

I've tried it. Double clicking does not open the door for me. Single click closes the doors- however I can't get them to open without oreseing the door handle

lilbean | 10. juli 2016

It doesn't work for me if I have autopresent off. That's silly because why would I need to use the fob if autopreesent is on? Because autopresent doesn't always work. I haven't done the latest update.

socalsam | 10. juli 2016

I don't have the PUP. So I don't know how it's supposed to work.

Redmiata98 | 10. juli 2016

I do not think you can open the driver door using the fob, only unlock it.

jlxjl | 10. juli 2016

I figured out a way to open the driver side door with the fob!
1) stay far enough from the car (or inside the house) so that the car cannot sense the fob.
2) double click the top of the fob (the car should not respond)
3) quickly get close enough to the car and double click the top again.
The car should unlock and the driver door opens. I've tried this a few times and it worked most of the time. If you wait too long between the first and second double click it will not work.

socalsam | 10. juli 2016

I tried it twice. It worked once. Going to try again....I think you are on tomsomething

socalsam | 10. juli 2016

I got it to work once- next 5 attempts were unsuccessful

dbh | 10. juli 2016

It works for me (when my door latches aren't otherwise broken, separate issue). I have auto-present turned off but do have PUP.

socalsam | 10. juli 2016

I don't have pup.

What do you do to open the door?

dbh | 10. juli 2016

Double click the top of the fob unlocks and opens the front door. That works every time. Double click the back to open the rear hatch sometimes takes two times.

Triggerplz | 10. juli 2016

When I click the top of the fob twice it opens my driver door each and everytime

socalsam | 10. juli 2016

Trigger- do you have pup?

socalsam | 10. juli 2016

I think it's time to take the car in for service and have the doors looked at! Damn! Was hoping to avoid door issues.

Triggerplz | 10. juli 2016

@sam Yes

dbh | 10. juli 2016

Yeah, see what they say. I would be really surprised if you managed to avoid front door issues entirely...but maybe I have the worst one in that respect.

lilbean | 10. juli 2016

@dbh - I commend you for your patience and tolerance :-)

dbh | 10. juli 2016

I think of it as being gentlemanly now, rather than patient - always opening the passenger door for my wife (but from the inside now, since that is the only way it will open) :p

lilbean | 10. juli 2016

@dbh - and you are practicing your flexibility climbing over the center console. You're like a ninja. :)

jlxjl | 10. juli 2016

It amazes me that the engineers at Tesla do difficult things, like autopilot, well but can't do the simple things like controlling doors. Others have mentioned that the trunk and FWD dangerously close on their own. I still love the car and I'm with socalsam and others that it is the best car I've ever own. Let's hope they get it right with the next software update.

MicTheCat | 11. juli 2016

Maybe not the same engineers on the two different systems;-)

socalsam | 11. juli 2016

I got it to work again first thing in the am but then nothing

snlnk | 11. juli 2016

@ dbh and Triggerplz +1, we have PUP and 2 clicks opens it every time.

socalsam | 11. juli 2016

Car is going in next week to take care of a few things. Door is one of them. Sometimes it opens, other times it does not. No clue why. Went to service center and we were able to replicate the issue.

jlxjl | 12. juli 2016

@socalsam, so what did the SC say about opening the door with a fob on a non PUP car? Is it suppose to open the door and we have a faulty fob or does the fob only unlock the door?

georgehawley.fl.us | 12. juli 2016

2 clicks on top of fob = driver's door opens.

Was asleep when the abbreviation PUP was created. "Purple under pants"? "Perpetually ugly profile?" "Preferred Uber passenger?" "Possible umbilical problem"? "Person unduly puzzled?" I don't know if I have it or not.

Ross1 | 12. juli 2016

Ask the dog.

Read the thread about the dog opening the door.
Ask him how he did it.

Ask him if he used the fob.

Ross1 | 12. juli 2016

"To think like a dog you have to be a dog"
(@Ross 2016 LOL)

lilbean | 12. juli 2016

PUP - Premium Upgrades Package :-)

socalsam | 12. juli 2016

@jlxjl - at first the person at the service center didnt think that you could do that. Then he checked and said yes, there was a firmware update that allowed users to open their doors with the fob. You should just have to click it twice and it will unlock the doors and open the drivers door. Thats how its supposed to work. Mine does not do that.

I would like to hear from other non pup owners.

georgehawley.fl.us | 12. juli 2016

I have PUP. Sorry, Sam. Thanks, @lilbean.

lilbean | 12. juli 2016

You're welcome @george. Thanks again for the laughs :-)

colden49 | 12. juli 2016

No PUP and no auto open. It worked once.

socalsam | 12. juli 2016

Mine is scheduled to go in next wed for some service items- they will address the auto opening with the fob at that time.

ITs supposed to work even if you don't have PUP.

Looks like a software glitch which is great news.

Redmiata98 | 13. juli 2016

I just got mine back from fixing a charge port open error. While there they did some other things such as updating the key fob firmware. When I click the top of the fob now it unlocks the doors AND opens the front driver door. Amazing the things you can learn on this forum, never would have tried this except for this post and my replies above, thank jl!

socalsam | 13. juli 2016

Good to hear!

jwh8000 | 13. juli 2016

That door opening on the FOB click is nice except I was parked on the street this weekend and unlocked the car as i was walking up to it and didn't notice the bicyclist coming, he just got past when the door popped open, close call, we were both lucky.

tommcd1 | 13. juli 2016

I don't have PUP but have recently experienced the driver door opening with double click on the FOB. It surprised me when it happened. I just went to try it now though and it didn't work. Bottom line - flaky behavior for now. Hopefully the next update will have it work consistently.

jwh8000 | 13. juli 2016

I have PUP and mine works most of the time, same as when I have auto set to on, but there are occasions when they don't work as advertised, not sure why like you said flaky doors.

jlxjl | 13. juli 2016

@Red, glad to have help you get your fob fixed, and thank you for letting us know. That way my Sevrice Center can't say it can't be done.

cmc5dc | 14. juli 2016

I don't have a PUP but the double click on the fob's remote is a hit or miss. It really depends on the distance I am from the vehicle.

ravi.jo | 20. juli 2016

I don't have the PUP and sometimes randomly the fob doubleclick opens the driver's door. I wish they fixed the software to make this work at all times. The tesla service rep had no clue about non-PUP vehicles having this feature. Claimed that it is only for PUP optioned vehicles. Now I know how good the service reps are :-) Can someone at Tesla look into this? There are so many comments about this working intermittently.

jlxjl | 21. juli 2016

I don't think Tesla intended the fob to open the door on a non-PUP configured car. It is not mentioned on the manual nor on the Tesla video, and my Delivery Specialist is unaware of it. Ocassionally, I was able to open the door with the fob, but since the last software upgrade, I cannot get it to open. Has anyone still experiencing the intermittent opening of the door with the fob?

ashvid | 21. juli 2016

Same here, opens sometimes, usually when I'm not very close to the car. It would be nice if it would open every time based on a preference I choose.
