10-30 to 14-50 adapter cord.

10-30 to 14-50 adapter cord.

We are going on a road trip from Ohio to Iowa in our 3-day old P85. To charge in our host's home, I need a 10-30 adapter cord.

I purchased a cloth dryer replacement cord and connect it to a 14-50 receptacle. Since the old dryer plug has 3-prongs, and the 14-50 is meant to be connected to 3 conductors and a ground, my question is should I bridge the ground and neutral in the 10-50 receptacle?

Look at the home made adapter link in the TIPS thread for details. You should connect the neutral from the 10-30 to the ground in the 14-50 and leave the 14-50 neutral unconnected. This of course makes the adapter dangerous for anything except Tesla charging.

Don't forget to limit charging to 24 amps.

Thanks @RichardKJ, just what I did. I also labeled the cord "for TESLA charging only".

Or you could buy a Tesla 10-30 adaptor

10-30 adaptor is easier and not expensive

I might have gone with the adapter (for only 3 times the price), but I needed the extra 10 feet to reach the dryer outlet anyway.

The NEMA 10-30 is an old dryer plug. I needed it for use at my parents. The UMC adapter from Tesla didn't solve the problem since my UMC cord was too short.

I got an adapter from here:

Also I got this 30' extension cord too:

So now i've got roughly a 50' cable for a 10-30 connection.

On adapters like these, I always put a label saying what the max. charge rate should be, in case I'm tired at the destination and am not thinking clearly...

I made a NEMA 14-30 dryer adapter cord because I also needed an extension cord (when visiting a friend) and wanted to only have a 14-50 one in the trunk.

I made it fair and square with neutral connected as well even though Tesla does not need it. I made sure that the receptacle end is marked visibly as 24A maximum so that it can't be missed ie forgotten. | 2019年8月12日

The UMC needs GND connection but the NEMA 10-30 has NEUTRAL but no GND. How to solve the problem? Thanks

Gen 1 or Gen 2 UMC? A 10-30 adapter is available for the Gen 1 UMC from Tesla.

@CLark For Tesla adapters the Neutral is bonded to ground at the panel and that is what is used as the ground. For home made adapters attach the ground of the 14-50 to the neutral of the 10-30.
