"Hands-free" phone dialing

"Hands-free" phone dialing

I have been driving my new MS85 for about 2 weeks and is very happy with it so far. Only major issue is regarding the "hands-free" phone dialing feature. After using the voice command to place a call, it searches my contacts and displays the appropriate contact with is phone number on the screen and requires me to touch it to complete the call. Why can't this feature complete the call without requiring that I physically touch the screen? I was told by my service adviser that this is to avoid placing a wrong call. My previous car completes the call by showing me the number requested and, if it is correct, I can command it verbally to complete the call by following it with the "CALL" voice command. If the contact has more than one number (i.e. work and home, for example), I can say "WORK" and then follow with "CALL" to select the appropriate number. In my opinion, it's more dangerous to have to touch the screen to complete a call as opposed to select it verbally alone. Seems to me that this problem can be resolved fairly easily with an appropriate software improvement.

I agree that in general the voice commands need some additional enhancements. You should be able to say "call work" to have it call the work number currently displayed on the screen. Also, you should be able to dial a number without it being a contact (e.g. call 5551234).

In general, Tesla needs to up the ante of their software development team.

it would be a good feature. I imagine it will come.

In general, software is fairly hard to develop. Especially if you don't want to crash the software on 25,000 cars on the road. I can't imagine the angst the doublequick rollout of 5.8 caused and am glad they pulled it off so nicely.

I'm pretty happy with the rate of change of what they're getting done (except perhaps on the iOS side of things), though of course I think they'd be better off if they hired me.

They probably should hire both of us, then ;-)

Seriously, for what the software currently is, the development is going pretty slowly. Does anybody know how big their dev team is? I think it's one item where Elon should look into.

The last number I heard was 9. That was some time ago, though.

There also should be quicker access to favorites somewhere. 90% of the time I'm either calling my wife's cell or my house from the car. Either with a button or a voice command I want quicker access to executing that call.

Really what I think would work well is for one of the two halves of the touchscreen to be set as multi-function where you could customize what it would include through a basic template. A few phone numbers, radio stations, etc.

I actually like the listing of the names/contacts before dialing. It is a personal decision to me. I use the voice "call" function when using the navigation, say something like "call doctor"; and a list of my doctors (in my iphone) shows up. I then select navigate.

As to dialing numbers, since the widespread use of smartphones; I don't even know the phone numbers of my kids cell phones; I have to dial by name!

The clumsy hands free dialing is the only thing I don't like about the Tesla. I had 2006 model cars do it perfectly. It's voice recognition is frankly horrible. I have to mispronounce my wife's name for it to be recognized (it's spelled just like it sounds and isn't rare). Update please. i will note that Tesla isn't alone in bad handsfree dialing, I'm just amazed that manufacturers seem to be ignoring this basic function.
