What type of motor is used PMAC???

Can anyone tell me if the AC induction motor that Tesla has developed is a PMAC motor or not. I find it hard to believe that they are getting that much regeneration from simply an AC induction motor. What an incredible piece if engineering. Test drove one for an hour and must own a couple of them. Can not wait for the model X to replace my gas guzzling QX-56. Does anyone know if there plans to make a sports car. The coupe is awesome and the crossover will be too. I may want a third and have the next generation of a roadster if there are plans for one. Someone should step up and help Elon and build upon the battery technology. Elon is such a visionary, you would think it would be contagious and someone would build on the battery technology. I can't imagine where we will be in 5 years with the advancements that Telsa is making today.

I understand a new roadster is tentatively planned for after the Gen3 car. So still a few years down the line.

No permanent magnets in Tesla motors.

Worry not. TM and Panasonic are on it.

The GenIII will incorporate some new tech that Elon can't reveal yet, he says.

If there are no permanant magnets in the rotor of the motor where is the incredible regen taking place. Is there an external generator or is the regen taking place strictly in the AC induction motor. I did not think that the field in the rotor of an AC induction motor could possibly hold a field for that long in regen mode. Does tesla make its own motors? Does telsa make its own inverters. I am impressed with the performance of both.

No external generators either.

Davep007 - Here's a great post from the Tesla Motors blog from a few years back discussing their use of the AC Induction motor in some detail...
