I have searched the forum for an answer about supercharging for the Model X. Will the X have the same benefit of using the supercharging locations for free? For ever? Same as the Model S?
I cannot see why this will not be the case. Superchargers are not really free, because the equipment required for using it is currently optional for 60kWh Model S and included in the cost of the 85 kWh Model S. (In other words you pre-pay) I suspect that the same options would apply to the Model X.
Of course it will. Think about it. None of the supercharging locations have any form of payment option installed. The business model they went with is prepay. It costs the buyer 2,000 to enable supercharging with their Model S purchase.
$2k for lifetime free charging. Well worth it.
This has been the question I've been wondering about. Actually, I've wanted to purchase the Model X, but instead, went down the path of the Model S, thinking that in 3 years I can use the buy-back program (once I actually purchase the Model S, which has been approved) if I would later want to get the Model X instead. BUT, a big or major concern is whether there would be "free" supercharging for the model X. I cannot find the answer either.
While we don't know FOR SURE. I would say it's highly probable the X will have free Supercharging.

I assume someday super chargers will be billed thru the car using an app similar to how iTunes works.
Until that day use will likely be included in the purchase price.
The logical time to implement a billing system would be with the release of the E. One way to keep the price of the E lower would be to make pre paid super charging an option.
Since the car is online and knows where and how much it charged integrating billing into the car would be very easy.
As the government kills off coal fired power plants the price of electricity is likely to increase.
Only makes sense that Tesla will develop a car based billing app.
Third party charge providers like hotels will be able to offer chargers that bill thru the system
Rates can be set by the provider and varied by time of use cost.
If all this happens the free for life cars will be more valuable. At least on the Tesla owned chargers.
The next logical step is an on car billing system. That will incentivize more locations to install chargers.
Billing will never be implemented. Not nearly worth the hassle.
What hassle. ITunes sells one song for 99 cents with one click on an iPad. Tesla could bill thru the car data connection with the only cost being software and a data base.
Allowing third parties to bill would expand charger availability.
The only question is at what point does it make sense to implement. I think the roll out of the E would be the logical time.

Free for life only applies to the Model S as of right now.
There's nothing stopping Tesla from differentiating down the line.
Offering 2012-2016 Model S and X owners "free for life" AND offering optionality for the 2017 Model E with "free for life" or "per use" or "battery lease" . . .
With the increasingly rapid conversion of green energy to replace coal mining factories and dirty supply chains to in order to create energy in this country and world wide, the concept of free for life for Tesla owners is not in danger, nor do I believe it will be necessary to start charging their customers even when the E (for everyone model) comes to market.
As the more affordable mass production car is still 2-3 years away, it is important to realize how fast the energy sector across the board is changing to accommodate the cheaper and more efficient creation, use and distribution of energy that will guarantee stable and low energy costs across the board for everyone.
From everything I have heard from interviews with Mr. Musk, the reason Tesla is here is not to profit, as much as to lead this new technology and way of producing and thinking about transport.
The freedom you get with a Tesla is embodied in the way you feel when you drive, knowing you are not polluting as your drive and that your energy can, and often is created without the heavy unseen burden of pollutants. Being free of gasoline and having energy to go wherever you wish for free from freely given wind, wave, water, sun,( as per ways we increasingly generate energy) is part of the ethos and freedom from dependency on oil and gas that contributes positively to how you feel behind the wheel, after the rush of instant torque slaps a smile on your face.
I think we all have many years of this freedom to look forward to from Tesla and that in this, it may prove to be another model for our greener brighter future.
Musk was asked point-blank in an interview if the free for life applied to other models, and he was adamant it would apply to all future Teslas.
Free indeed, if you purchase a Model S with a 85 kWh battery pack. With the 60 kWh pack it is an option that you pay for when you order your car. I hope that the same will apply to the Model X, and I plan on getting the 85 kWh battery pack myself, but at some point in the future, Tesla may make it an 'Option' with a range of at least 200 miles. As Brian H says, there will never be a per use fee.
