Tesla Supercharging at CBL Malls

Business Wire: CBL & Associates Properties Inc. (NYSE: CBL) today announced the launch of a partnership with Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) to install Tesla Supercharging stations at several CBL Malls across the country.

As charging times decrease and range increases, mall-based stations will be less attractive as there will be no need to entertain people for up to an hour.

Give me a nice lit up 24/7 big ol' gas station. I drive at night and sitting in a deserted mall may not be all that good of an idea.

Of course, having many charging choices is the best plan.

The chosen malls are located at the intersections of interstates and major highways. Much of the Supercharging will be done by travelers passing through who are not locals that regularly visit those malls.

As a Chicagolander it's good to see that Superchargers will be installed at CherryVale Mall in Rockford, Illinois. CherryVale is at the intersections of several interstates and major highways. They connect Chicagoland with Iowa, and central Wisconsin with downstate Illinois.

Superchargers have to be located where there is sufficient electrical service available. Malls/shopping centers are a good choice.

Playing devils advocate here but Supercharging times are only going to get quicker. Why put them where folks are going to want to wander away from their cars for longer periods of time?

There are already folks leaving their cars for a lot longer than necessary to fully charge them thus blocking the SC for others to use. I know the vast majority of owners are conscientious and will use their smart phone app to monitor charging, or a note on the dashboard to have the next in line call them but it's the others that I'm worried about.

Some serious etiquette training is going to be in order for these owners.

Steven is right. Superchargers need 480V, hi Amp feed from a transformer, especially in a place that has 6+ ports. A restaurant may not have that. A mall has a lot more shops, restaurants, etc to market to the Tesla owners. They also have large parking lots and so they may give the space rent free. Tesla could even get electricity for free or heavily discounted.

The superchargers could collect data on cars waiting in line and alert the owner via the iPhone app. Since the Model S, the supercharger can have 3G, the owner can be alerted via a SMS.
