Elon on Twitter about reveal

Tomorrow is Part 1 of the Model 3 unveil. Part 2, which takes things to another level, will be closer to production.

You will see the car very clearly, but some important elements will be added and some will evolve.

SD Supercharger | 2016年3月30日

Just saw this on Twitter--maybe the next level is maximum plaid. I think what he is telling us is that they will listen to the reception of the M3, what the press says--what the consumer/customer says, and will modify it accordingly---much as prototypes released at auto shows are used to judge the publics perception of the car. If most people say they love the design, it will be very close to what is released tomorrow. If the response is mostly we don't like it, there could be style changes. Technically, the car will evolve in 18 months for sure given the current rate of evolution of the MS.

Hmmm... OK. That is suitably cryptic.

Cameras replacing side mirrors?

Haggy | 2016年3月30日

This makes sense. Tesla should have taken the same strategy with the Model X and its falcon wing doors. They essentially did that with some features such as its air filter and front doors. It would be nice if they have a list of features for the Model 3 that will take some time before they have a prototype, at which point they can decide which ones are practical and which will be too expensive to implement.

carlk | 2016年3月30日

Tesla did have a focus group when it was designing the X. The X is a damn good design but no design could make everyone happy. You will always hear complains no matter what you do. The grass is always greener over the other side of the fence.

TaoJones | 2016年3月30日

There are a number of competitive advantages, that I at least don't expect to hear about tomorrow, that can and should make it into the first cars off the line.

AP features and improvements come to mind.
Range enhancements as sweeteners.
Specific features that, for example, the Bolt will have that perhaps the Model 3 does not yet have (360-degree view, HUD maybe as an option).

It will be interesting since half of those are features not yet available for the Model S/X.

Unlike the lack of a business model for Internet porn back in the day, I would like to believe that the path is clearly differentiated for the Model 3 - which is to say not completely at the expense of the Model S/X.

You're welcome :)

baronalan | 2016年3月30日

From a design standpoint, some elements like the nose could ultimately be different from what we see tomorrow. Much like the original X was shown with a nose cone before it evolved into a more modest pinched slit.

Reveal will be the 35K, RWD, 200+ mile range car that TM has assured everyone was their goal. This will not compete with the model S in either range or acceleration. Part deux (IMO?WAG) will be the introduction of the 50K car variant in mid-late 2017 just before production starts that has AWD/2.0 complete AP/300 mile range and sub 3 seconds 0-60. That will compete with the S. If they indicated they had that variant from the reveal S sales drop...

carlk | 2016年3月30日

There is no need to make anything that may compete with S if ~250,000 reservations are down before production is even ready to start. There is a good possiblity that could happen.

Darryl | 2016年3月30日

They have also indicated there will be a SUV and possibly even a pickup build on the same framework as the Model 3. There is also going to be a redesign of the Model S probably to coinside with the announcement of the performance version of the Model 3. So they are going to take the Model S up a notch at the same time they take Model 3 up a notch.

As with the Model X, the first prototype and the final released car were entirely different.

How many will go with the performance. Version of the model 3? It will probably be released after the base car. The $50k is the base price, by the time you add options you could double that amount.

jordanrichard | 2016年3月31日

Darryl, there will be a SUV/CUV version of the Model ≡, but not a truck. Yes, Elon did say they wanted to build a pickup truck, but it would be the size of the number 1 selling vehicle in the U.S. for decades and that is the F150.

Incredibly inspired by the interest in Model 3. You won't be disappointed. Also, small token of appreciation coming for those who lined up.

What do you think "small token of appreciation" could be?

danCE | 2016年3月31日

My guess is a Hot Wheels-sized version of the prototype shown tonight, mailed out to everyone who lined up. Something to put on your desk and look at every so often while we wait for the Design Studio to open up.

georgehawley.fl.us | 2016年3月31日

I reserved something today but I'm not exactly sure what it will be. If we are to purchase a smaller Tesla, we prefer a Crossover. Did I reserve a sedan? If they announce a Crossover later, will I have to start over with a new reservation? Oh-oh.

jordanrichard | 2016年3月31日

Elon will be sending Model ≡ reservation holders a Radio Flyer MS for Christmas....... :-)

biggestfan | 2016年3月31日

I can personally guarantee that it is not Maximum Plaid. Elon has already said that is reserved for the next Roadster....and as Ludicrous as it may sound (pun intended), I do believe he is fully intending on continuing the Space Balls parallel by creating the next Roadster with Maximum Plaid mode. I can hardly wait to see how quick that one is. Ludicrous on the Model S is already as fast or faster than many super cars. There are truly not very many cars that are quicker 0-60, there are a few that are faster in the quarter mile...but the Model S with Ludicrous is definitely impressive.

My guess is that they have maybe not nailed down all of the minor details surrounding the car yet. Do the back seats fold down, what features will be standard and optional. I would think that the shape and even performance of the car could change by the time it enters production.

Go Tesla!!!

The whole Internet porn thing seemed like it would dominate the Internet, until the whole thing was overtaken by cat videos. You can't tell what people will prefer whether it comes to a car or a pussy cat.

JZ13 | 2016年3月31日

Elon stated in prior conference calls that they have some amazing new ideas for a car that they want to roll out on the Model 3 but they are going to slow down on those and release them a few years after the basic Model 3 is revealed. The reason is because of what they learned from the Model X - that too many new complexities on a brand new car leads to delays and image problems. The Model 3 being the ultimate product for Tesla they could not afford any delays.

Purrrrrfectly played, indeed.

Imma hold out hope for a trim package upgrade. After all, everybody needs more trim.

That said, the Reservation Red paint idea from Reddit was pretty funny indeed.
